Short answer
Quota attainment is the share of a sales quota a rep or team achieved in a period: actual sales credited ÷ quota × 100. A rep with a $250,000 quarterly quota who closes $230,000 has 92% attainment. Team attainment can mean total team sales ÷ total team quota, or the share of reps at or above 100% of quota. Report both, because a few strong performers can lift a team total while most reps miss.
- Attainment = sales credited in the period ÷ quota for the period × 100.
- Team total attainment and the share of reps at quota answer different questions; track both.
- Prorate quotas for ramping reps and partial periods, or attainment will mislead.
- When most reps miss, look at quotas, territories and pipeline before blaming the people.
- In Salesforce's 2024 survey, 84% of sales reps said they missed quota the previous year.
On this page
This page is for sales managers, RevOps analysts and reps who need to measure quota attainment properly and work out why it's high or low. It covers the formula, the difference between rep and team attainment, pacing during a period and what drives the number.
The formula
Quota attainment = sales credited in the period ÷ quota for the period × 100
| Input | What to use | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Sales credited | Whatever the comp plan credits: bookings, annual contract value, gross margin or units | Mixing units, such as bookings against a revenue quota |
| Quota | The target for the same period and the same unit | Mid-period changes that aren't restated |
| Period | Month, quarter or year | Comparing a rep's quarter with another's year |
A rep with a $250,000 quarterly quota who books $230,000 is at 92%. If quotas are set in annual contract value, credit deals in ACV too, not total contract value.
For reps who start partway through a period or are still ramping, prorate the quota. A rep who joins halfway through the quarter with a half quota and books half of it is at 100%, not 50%.
Rep attainment vs team attainment
"Team attainment" can mean several things, and they tell different stories.
| Measure | Formula | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Team total attainment | Total team sales ÷ total team quota | Whether the team hit its number |
| Share of reps at quota | Reps at or above 100% ÷ all reps | Whether the quotas are achievable for most people |
| Median rep attainment | The middle rep's attainment | What a typical rep achieved, unaffected by one star |
| Distribution | Reps in bands, such as under 50%, 50% to 79%, 80% to 99%, 100% and over | Whether misses are widespread or concentrated |
Worked example: one team, four answers
Illustrative example. The company, reps and figures are invented to show the arithmetic.
Penrill (penrill.example) sells e-signature software. Its mid-market team of six account executives finished the quarter like this:
| Rep | Quota | Booked | Attainment |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | $300,000 | $420,000 | 140% |
| B | $300,000 | $330,000 | 110% |
| C | $300,000 | $270,000 | 90% |
| D | $300,000 | $240,000 | 80% |
| E | $300,000 | $195,000 | 65% |
| F (joined mid-quarter, prorated quota) | $150,000 | $90,000 | 60% |
| Team | $1,650,000 | $1,545,000 | 94% |
- Team total attainment: $1,545,000 ÷ $1,650,000 = 94%. Close to target.
- Share of reps at quota: 2 of 6 = 33%. Two-thirds of the team missed.
- Median rep attainment: the middle two reps are at 80% and 90%, so the median is 85%.
- Dependence on one rep: without rep A, the team would be at $1,125,000 ÷ $1,350,000 = 83%.
The 94% headline hides a team where most reps missed and one rep carried the result. If rep A leaves, next quarter is in trouble. That's why the share of reps at quota and the median belong next to the team total in every report.
Pacing during the period
Midway through a quarter, compare attainment with how much of the period has passed:
Pace = attainment to date ÷ share of the period elapsed
Six weeks into a 13-week quarter, a rep at 40% attainment is on a pace of 40% ÷ (6 ÷ 13) = 40% ÷ 46% = 87%. If your team books most deals in the last month of the quarter, straight-line pacing will look alarming every quarter. Compare with the share of bookings that usually lands by that week instead.
What drives quota attainment
| Driver | How it shows up | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Quota setting | Most reps miss, or most reps beat it easily | Whether quotas were set top-down from a company target or from what territories can produce |
| Territory potential | The same reps hit or miss depending on territory | Whether sales territories are balanced on potential and workload |
| Pipeline | Reps start the period without enough to close | Pipeline coverage at the start of the period, by rep |
| Win rate and deal size | Plenty of pipeline, too few or too small wins | Stage conversion and discounting by rep |
| Ramp time | New reps drag down the team | Whether quotas are prorated and ramped |
| Market conditions | Everyone misses at once | Win and loss reasons, cycle length trends |
| Skill and effort | A few reps miss while peers in similar territories hit | Activity, call reviews, coaching |
A useful first diagnosis: if most reps miss, start with quotas, territories and pipeline. If a few reps miss while others with similar territories hit, start with coaching.
Pipeline is the driver reps can most directly affect. Bebop finds companies that match a plain-language description of your best customers and explains why each one fits, so a rep short on coverage can add qualified accounts quickly.
What the benchmarks say
Salesforce's sixth State of Sales report, published in July 2024, surveyed 5,500 sales professionals across 27 countries between March and April 2024. It found that "67% of sales reps don't expect to meet their quota this year, and an even larger 84% missed it last year."
Read that with care. It's self-reported, covers every industry and company size, and says nothing about how the quotas were set. Use it as context: missing quota is common, so a team where most reps miss may have a quota-setting problem rather than a talent problem. Your own distribution, quarter over quarter, is the benchmark that matters.
Common mistakes
- Reporting only the team total. It hides how many reps missed.
- Not prorating for new hires, leave or territory changes.
- Changing quotas mid-period without restating attainment for the whole period.
- Double counting split credit. When two reps share a deal, team totals can exceed what the company booked. Reconcile with finance.
- Treating attainment as a skill score. It mixes skill with territory, quota and luck.
Next step: tie attainment to pay with the sales commission plan template.

Questions people ask
How do you calculate quota attainment?
Divide the sales a rep or team is credited with in a period by their quota for the same period, then multiply by 100. A rep with a $300,000 quarterly quota who books $270,000 is at 90% attainment. Use the same unit as the quota, such as bookings or annual contract value, and prorate the quota for reps who joined partway through the period or are still ramping.
What is a good quota attainment rate?
For an individual rep, 100% or more means they hit their number. For a team, look at two figures: total attainment near or above 100%, and the share of reps at quota. Many sales leaders aim for quotas most reps can reach. If only a small minority hit while the team total looks fine, a few strong performers are carrying the result and the quotas may be set too high.
What percentage of sales reps hit quota?
Surveys suggest many don't. In Salesforce's sixth State of Sales report, published in July 2024 from a survey of 5,500 sales professionals in 27 countries, 84% of sales reps said they missed quota the previous year and 67% didn't expect to meet it that year. The figures are self-reported and mix every industry, so compare your team's own distribution over time.
What is the difference between team and individual quota attainment?
Individual attainment is one rep's credited sales divided by their quota. Team attainment usually means total team sales divided by total team quota, but it's also worth tracking the share of reps at or above quota and the median rep's attainment. A team can reach 94% overall while only a third of its reps hit quota, if one or two reps far exceed theirs.
How do you improve quota attainment?
Start by finding where the misses come from. If most reps miss, check how quotas were set, whether territories are balanced and whether reps start each period with enough pipeline. If a few reps miss while peers with similar territories hit, focus on coaching: call reviews, deal inspection and stage-by-stage conversion. Prorate quotas for new hires so the numbers reflect reality.
