Most years are "approximately", rounded to the nearest thousand or hundred. The 2020 10-K gave an exact figure, 210,153, in its human capital section, and "approximately 210,000" in its overview. The changes are our arithmetic.
Where Citi's employees work
The 2025 10-K says Citi "has employees in over 90 countries, across all of its segments" and that "approximately 31% are based in the U.S." That's about 70,000 people by our arithmetic.
The 2024 10-K, the latest with a full table, split its 229,000 employees by business and region (in thousands):
| Segment or component | North America | International | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Services | 4 | 20 | 24 |
| US Personal Banking (USPB) | 19 | 2 | 21 |
| Wealth | 5 | 7 | 12 |
| Markets | 3 | 6 | 9 |
| Banking | 2 | 6 | 8 |
| All Other, including Legacy Franchises, Operations and Technology, and Global Staff Functions | 53 | 102 | 155 |
| Total | 86 | 143 | 229 |
Two things stand out. First, two-thirds of the workforce (155,000) sits in All Other, which includes operations, technology and staff functions that support every business, as well as Legacy Franchises such as Mexico's consumer bank. Second, 62% of employees are classed as International. The 10-K notes that "Mexico is included in International" and that the split "is based on business and region, which may not reflect where the employee physically resides."
What the number includes
- Full-time employees. Citi counts full-time staff. Its 2024 10-K says "part-time employees represented less than 1.0% of Citi's global workforce," and the 2022 10-K put part-time colleagues at under 1.5%.
- Every segment and country. The count covers Citigroup and its subsidiaries worldwide, including businesses Citi is exiting until they're sold.
- No contractors. The 10-K doesn't give a contractor count, and the headcount is of employees only.
What changed and why
2019 to 2022: growth to a peak
Headcount rose by 40,000 in three years. The 2022 10-K says that in 2022 "Citi welcomed nearly 60,000 new colleagues," a gross hiring figure: net headcount rose by 16,600 that year.
2023 and 2024: organizational simplification
In September 2023 Citi announced an organizational simplification. Its 2024 10-K describes the result: Citi "eliminated the previous Institutional Clients Group and Personal Banking and Wealth Management layers, exited certain institutional business lines and consolidated its regional structure, creating one international group." It recorded restructuring charges, mainly "severance costs associated with actual headcount reductions," of $781 million in 2023 and $259 million in 2024, and about $1.026 billion over the program to date by the 2025 10-K. Headcount fell by 10,000 in 2024.
2025 and 2026: exits continue
The 2025 10-K describes the remaining Legacy Franchises as "the Asia Consumer and Mexico Consumer/SBMM businesses that Citi has exited or intends to exit." It records an agreement to sell a 25% equity stake in Banamex, its Mexican bank, and says AO Citibank in Russia was sold on February 18, 2026. Each completed sale of a whole business takes its staff out of Citi's count.
Revenue per employee
Citi's 2025 revenues, net of interest expense, were $85.2 billion, up 6%. $85,225 million ÷ 226,000 = about $377,100 per employee (our calculation). For 2024, using the figure as restated in the 2025 10-K ($80,722 million ÷ 229,000), it was about $352,500.
| 2025 revenues by segment | Amount | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Markets | $22.0 billion | 25.8% |
| Services | $21.3 billion | 24.9% |
| US Personal Banking | $21.0 billion | 24.6% |
| Wealth | $8.6 billion | 10.0% |
| Banking | $8.2 billion | 9.6% |
| All Other (managed basis) | $4.4 billion | 5.2% |
Divestiture-related items of minus $0.2 billion bring the total to $85.2 billion. Because two-thirds of employees sit in All Other and support the segments, dividing a segment's revenue by its own headcount would overstate its output per employee.
Selling to a company this size
General guidance on how a global bank of this size buys, not a description of Citi's internal processes.
- Expect third-party risk management. Banks put new suppliers through vendor risk, information security, data privacy and resilience review, under rules set by their regulators. Have your documentation ready before your first meeting.
- Find the operations and technology owner. With most staff in shared operations, technology and staff functions, the buyer for a tool is often in a central function rather than the business it serves.
- Watch the restructuring. A bank simplifying its structure under regulatory consent orders, as the 10-K describes, prioritizes controls, data quality and efficiency. Frame your product against those priorities.
- Be patient with the cycle. Large banks often take months to onboard a new supplier. Our mutual action plan template helps keep both sides on track.

How to check Citigroup's headcount yourself
- Open Citigroup's 10-K filings on SEC EDGAR and pick the latest one, filed each February.
- Search for "full-time employees". The overview gives this year and last year; the Human Capital Resources and Management section adds the US share.

Questions people ask
How many employees does Citigroup have in 2026?
Citigroup's latest reported figure is approximately 226,000 full-time employees on December 31, 2025, from its 2025 10-K, filed February 20, 2026. That's down from about 229,000 a year earlier. Citi doesn't report headcount in its quarterly earnings releases or 10-Qs, so the next figure will be in its 10-K for 2026, normally filed in February.
How many Citi employees are in the United States?
About 31% of Citi's roughly 226,000 employees were based in the United States at the end of 2025, according to the 2025 10-K, or about 70,000 by our arithmetic. The 2024 10-K put about 86,000 of 229,000 employees in North America, but that split is by assigned business and region, which may not match where people physically work.
How many employees has Citi laid off?
Citi's 10-Ks don't give a total number of roles cut. They describe an organizational simplification announced in September 2023, with restructuring charges, mainly severance for headcount reductions, of $781 million in 2023 and $259 million in 2024. Headcount fell from about 240,000 at the end of 2022 to about 226,000 at the end of 2025, partly because of business sales.
What is Citigroup's revenue per employee?
About $377,100 in 2025, by our calculation: $85,225 million of revenues, net of interest expense, divided by about 226,000 full-time employees, both from the 2025 10-K. For 2024 it was about $352,500, using the 2024 revenue as restated in the 2025 10-K. Revenue rose 6% while headcount fell 1.3%, so output per employee grew.
Why does Citi have so many employees outside the US?
Citi operates in more than 90 countries, and its Services business, which provides cash management, payments, trade and securities services to multinational corporations, financial institutions and public sector organizations, had 20,000 of its 24,000 employees outside North America at the end of 2024. Shared operations, technology and staff functions also employ about 102,000 people internationally, according to the 2024 10-K.
