Largest grocery companies in the US: 16 ranked by grocery sales, plus the world's biggest

Walmart sells nearly twice as much grocery in the US as Kroger, the largest traditional supermarket company, but most lists compare Walmart's total revenue with Kroger's. This one uses the grocery sales each company reports, so a supercenter, a warehouse club and a supermarket chain are measured the same way.

  • The US had 62,947 supermarket and grocery store establishments with 2.8 million employees in 2023 (Census).
  • Grocery Outlet runs a $4.7 billion business with 2,207 employees because independent operators run its stores.

This list is for people who sell to grocers: food and beverage suppliers and brokers, store equipment, refrigeration and maintenance firms, retail technology and data vendors, logistics companies and marketing agencies. It ranks the largest US grocery companies by the grocery sales in their own 10-K filings, adds the world's biggest food retailers, counts US supermarkets from Census data, and explains where the buying happens.

From each company's latest 10-K filed by 30 October 2026, except Ahold Delhaize, whose 2025 annual report says its US brands generated $60 billion of sales. Headquarters are the business addresses on file with the SEC. Employees are as each filing states them.

What the measures mean:

  • General merchandisers report grocery as a category. Walmart U.S. sold $285.5 billion of grocery out of $483.0 billion in total net sales, and Sam's Club U.S. sold $64.7 billion of grocery out of $93.0 billion. Dollar General's $35.1 billion of consumables includes paper and cleaning products as well as food.
  • Costco's food figure is worldwide. Its 10-K doesn't split categories by country. The US was 72.5% of Costco's $303.2 billion of total revenue; if food sells in the same proportion everywhere, US food sales would be about $115 billion (our estimate), still in third place.
  • Amazon doesn't break out Whole Foods. Its 10-K reports physical stores as one line, defined as sales where customers physically select items in a store.
  • Some of the largest grocers are private. Several big regional chains, cooperatives and the US arm of Aldi don't file 10-Ks or publish full results, so they aren't ranked.

Schwarz Group publishes its own figures although it's private: Lidl's store revenue was €140.2 billion and Kaufland's €36.7 billion. Euros are converted at the Federal Reserve's 2025 average rate of $1.1306. Not ranked: Aldi, Carrefour, Tesco, Aeon, Seven & i, Loblaw and Woolworths Group, whose results we didn't open for this list.

By food alone, Schwarz Group is the world's largest food retailer on this table: Walmart and Costco both sell large amounts of general merchandise, while Lidl and Kaufland are mostly grocery.

How many grocery stores there are in the US

County Business Patterns, the Census Bureau's count of business locations with paid employees, counted 62,947 supermarket and other grocery store establishments (NAICS 445110, excluding convenience stores) in 2023, with 2,808,118 employees and $83.7 billion of annual payroll. CBP 2023 uses the NAICS 2017 definitions; the 2022 revision renamed the code to "Supermarkets and Other Grocery Retailers (except Convenience Retailers)".

New York had the most establishments (8,320), followed by California (8,044), Florida (3,850), Texas (3,739), Illinois (2,647), Pennsylvania (2,543), New Jersey (2,405) and North Carolina (2,007). For the full count by type and state, see our list of grocery stores.

How we built the list

  1. What's counted. Grocery sales as each company reports them: the grocery category for general merchandisers and warehouse clubs, and total sales for supermarket companies, whose sales are mostly food.
  2. Which year. The latest fiscal year in a 10-K filed by 30 October 2026. Grocers close their years in late December, January, February, July or September.
  3. What's left out. Private grocers and cooperatives that don't file results, wholesalers and distributors that don't run their own stores, and convenience store chains.

What the top results get wrong. Ranking pages that compare total revenue put Walmart and Costco on top without saying how much of their sales is grocery; LegalClarity's world list, for example, gives Walmart's $713.2 billion and then estimates its grocery sales at "roughly 60 percent" of US sales, when Walmart's 10-K reports the grocery figure exactly ($285.5 billion). The same page converts some euro figures to dollars and leaves others in euros, and uses Schwarz Group's 2024 figure. The USDA chart that turns up in searches for this term covers grocery market shares only up to 2013.

What the list is good for if you sell B2B

Know where each decision is made. This is general guidance, not taken from any one company's policies:

Type of grocerExamplesWhere buying happens
Supercenters and clubsWalmart, Costco, Sam's Club, BJ'sCentral merchandising by category; store operations and equipment at headquarters
National supermarket groupsKroger, Albertsons, Ahold Delhaize USACorporate category teams, plus divisions or banners with their own merchandising and store budgets
Regional chainsPublix, Weis, Ingles, VillageHeadquarters, often with a smaller team that knows suppliers personally
Specialty and valueSprouts, Grocery Outlet, Natural GrocersLean central teams; Grocery Outlet's independent operators also decide locally

Use the 10-K to size the account. A supermarket company's filing gives its store count, square footage, distribution centers and capital spending plans; the properties and capital expenditure sections tell an equipment or services seller how many sites there are and whether remodels are coming. Our guide to selling to retailers covers category reviews and vendor onboarding, and at volume Bebop researches each account in a list and finds the people.

Worked example

Illustrative example. Coldwatch (coldwatch.example) sells refrigeration monitoring for $250 per store per month. It wants larger supermarkets in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

  1. Size the area. New Jersey (2,405) and Pennsylvania (2,543) have 4,948 supermarket and grocery establishments between them.
  2. Estimate the large stores. Nationally, 10,162 of 62,947 establishments (16.1%) have 100 or more employees. Applying that share gives about 800 large stores in the two states. Treat it as an estimate.
  3. Do the arithmetic. If Coldwatch wins 10% of them, 80 stores x $250 x 12 = $240,000 a year.
  4. Start with one chain. Regional grocers headquartered in the area, such as Weis Markets (Sunbury, PA) and Village Super Market (Springfield, NJ), buy centrally. A pilot in 40 stores is 40 x $250 x 12 = $120,000 a year, small enough for a director of store operations or facilities to approve.
