Short answer
Medtronic had over 95,000 full-time employees as of April 24, 2026, the end of its fiscal 2026, according to its Form 10-K filed June 18, 2026. About 43% are based in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. Medtronic has reported "95,000+" or "over 95,000" in every 10-K since fiscal 2022; its last exact figure was 93,792 full-time employees in April 2020. The total includes the Diabetes business, now MiniMed Group, which reports about 8,000 employees.
- Latest figure: over 95,000 full-time employees at April 24, 2026, 43% of them in the U.S. or Puerto Rico (fiscal 2026 10-K).
- Five straight 10-Ks (fiscal 2022 to 2026) give the same rounded figure; the last exact count was 93,792 full-time employees at April 24, 2020.
- The count still includes the Diabetes business: MiniMed Group, about 90% owned after its March 2026 IPO, reports about 8,000 employees of its own.
- Revenue per employee was at most about $382,800 in fiscal 2026 (our calculation), up from about $308,300 in fiscal 2020.

This page is for sellers sizing Medtronic as an account, analysts comparing medical device makers, and anyone who needs a Medtronic headcount they can cite. Every figure comes from Medtronic's annual report on Form 10-K, filed with the SEC each June. Medtronic's fiscal year ends on the last Friday in April and is named for the calendar year it ends in, so fiscal 2026 ended on April 24, 2026. The quarterly 10-Q filed September 3, 2026 doesn't give an employee total, so the June 2026 10-K is still the newest company figure.

The exact figures come from the "Additional Information" lines of the selected financial data table, which the 10-K dropped after fiscal 2020. Since then Medtronic has given a rounded figure in its Human Capital section. Read the flat run from 2022 to 2026 as "still above 95,000", not as no change: a move of a few thousand people could sit inside it.
What the number includes
- Full-time employees. The 2026 10-K says: "Medtronic has over 95,000 full-time employees, of which 43% are based in the U.S. or Puerto Rico." The 2021 filing put it differently: "More than 99 percent of Medtronic's 90,000+ employees work full-time."
- Two counts until 2020. The older five-year tables gave both full-time employees and full-time equivalent employees at year end. The filings don't define the second figure. It ran about 11,000 above the full-time count, so it covers people the full-time count leaves out. Compare like with like: 93,792 is the figure to set against today's 95,000.
- The whole group, including MiniMed. The 2026 10-K says that "unless otherwise specified, the Company's business metrics presented in this report include our Diabetes Business." MiniMed Group, which holds that business, completed its IPO on March 9, 2026, and Medtronic kept about 90% and still consolidates it. MiniMed's own 10-K, filed June 29, 2026, reports "approximately 8,000 employees as of April 2026", roughly 8% of the Medtronic total (our calculation).
- No contractor count. The 10-K doesn't say how many contractors or temporary workers Medtronic uses, so don't add any to the total.
- A point-in-time count at the fiscal year end, not an average for the year.
What changed and why
- Fiscal 2018: down to 86,368 from 91,267. On July 29, 2017 Medtronic sold its Patient Care, Deep Vein Thrombosis and Nutritional Insufficiency businesses to Cardinal Health for $6.1 billion. The 2019 10-K says those businesses had $2.4 billion of net sales in fiscal 2017.
- Fiscal 2019 and 2020: back above 90,000. Full-time headcount rose by about 3,700 in each year. The filings don't give a reason.
- Fiscal 2021 to 2026: cost programs, flat rounded total. The Enterprise Excellence and Simplification programs, both substantially complete by the end of fiscal 2023, carried cumulative pre-tax charges of $1.8 billion and $0.5 billion. In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023 Medtronic took another $0.3 billion of charges, "primarily related to employee termination benefits." Restructuring and associated costs were $389 million in fiscal 2024 and $303 million in fiscal 2025, predominantly employee termination benefits, facility consolidations and asset write-downs. Through all of it the reported total stayed at 95,000 or more.
- Fiscal 2026 onward: the MiniMed split. In December 2025 Medtronic's board approved restructuring actions to separate the two companies, including "workforce-related actions" and the separation of duplicated shared services, with pre-tax charges of about $300 million to $500 million expected through fiscal 2029. Medtronic says it plans further steps to separate MiniMed or sell all or part of its stake. When it stops consolidating MiniMed, expect the reported headcount to drop by roughly MiniMed's 8,000.
Revenue per employee
Medtronic's fiscal 2026 net sales were $36,364 million. Divided by 95,000, that's $36,364 million ÷ 95,000 = about $382,800 per employee (our calculation). Because the filing says "over 95,000", the true figure is somewhat lower.
| Fiscal year | Net sales | Employees used | Revenue per employee (our calculation) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | $36.4 billion | 95,000 | at most about $382,800 |
| 2025 | $33.5 billion | 95,000 | at most about $353,000 |
| 2024 | $32.4 billion | 95,000 | at most about $340,700 |
| 2020 | $28.9 billion | 93,792 | about $308,300 |
| 2019 | $30.6 billion | 90,071 | about $339,300 |
The 10-K splits headcount only by place (43% U.S. or Puerto Rico), so it can't be matched to segments. Fiscal 2026 net sales by segment were:
| Segment | Fiscal 2026 net sales | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Cardiovascular | $13,976 million | 38% |
| Neuroscience | $10,287 million | 28% |
| Medical Surgical | $8,815 million | 24% |
| Diabetes (MiniMed) | $3,112 million | 9% |
| Other | $174 million | under 1% |
Sales were split almost evenly by place: $18,103 million in the U.S. and $18,261 million outside it. With 43% of employees in the U.S. or Puerto Rico, the U.S. brings in a larger share of sales than of staff. Treat any per-region figure as rough: Puerto Rico is grouped with the U.S. for staff, not for sales.
Selling to a company of Medtronic's size
General guidance on how a 95,000-person device maker buys, not a description of Medtronic's internal processes.
- Find the division, then the operating unit. The 10-K describes three portfolios and eight divisions (for example Cardiac Rhythm & Heart Failure, Cranial & Spinal Technologies, Surgical & Endoscopy), each with its own operating units. A problem in clinical evidence, field sales or manufacturing usually belongs to one of them, not to "Medtronic".
- Expect quality and regulatory review. Anything that touches product design, manufacturing or patient data passes quality, regulatory and security checks before a purchase order, and those reviews often take longer than the commercial approval.
- Watch the separation. The MiniMed transition creates a period of duplicated systems, shared-service agreements and teams standing up on their own. New companies need their own tools, which is often where a vendor gets in.
- Name the owner. Work out who signs, who uses and who can block; our guide to finding decision makers shows how, and selling to hospitals explains the buyers on the other side of Medtronic's own sales.
At this size, mapping the right team is the slow part of the work. Bebop researches each account and suggests who to talk to and the angle to open with; check what it finds against the company's filings.
How to check the number yourself
- Open Medtronic's 10-K filings on SEC EDGAR and pick the latest, filed each June.
- In Item 1, find the Human Capital heading. The headcount and the U.S. share are at the end of the first paragraph.
- For the Diabetes business on its own, open MiniMed Group's 10-K and search for "employees".
- Before you compare Medtronic with another company, note whether the other figure counts part-time staff or full-time equivalents.

Questions people ask
How many employees does Medtronic have in 2026?
Over 95,000 full-time employees as of April 24, 2026, the last day of fiscal 2026, according to the Form 10-K Medtronic filed on June 18, 2026. Medtronic reports the figure once a year, rounded, and its quarterly 10-Qs don't update it. The total includes the Diabetes business, now MiniMed Group, which Medtronic still controls and which reports about 8,000 employees.
How many employees does Medtronic have in the US?
About 41,000, by our calculation: the fiscal 2026 10-K says 43% of Medtronic's over 95,000 full-time employees are based in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. Because the filing groups Puerto Rico with the U.S. and rounds the total, treat it as an approximate floor. The share has been 43% or 44% in every 10-K since fiscal 2021.
Does Medtronic's employee count include MiniMed?
Yes, for now. Medtronic's fiscal 2026 10-K says its business metrics include the Diabetes business unless otherwise specified, and Medtronic still owned about 90% of MiniMed Group after the March 9, 2026 IPO, so it consolidates it. MiniMed's own 10-K reports about 8,000 employees as of April 2026. Once Medtronic separates MiniMed fully, its reported headcount should fall by roughly that number.
Has Medtronic had layoffs?
Medtronic's filings describe restructuring rather than giving layoff numbers. It took $0.3 billion of charges in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2023 primarily for employee termination benefits, and restructuring and associated costs of $389 million in fiscal 2024 and $303 million in fiscal 2025, mostly termination benefits and facility consolidations. In December 2025 it approved MiniMed separation actions, including workforce-related actions, costing $300 million to $500 million.
What is Medtronic's revenue per employee?
At most about $382,800 in fiscal 2026, by our calculation: $36,364 million of net sales divided by 95,000 employees, both from the fiscal 2026 10-K. Because the filing says "over 95,000", the true figure is a little lower. In fiscal 2020, the last year with an exact count, it was about $308,300 ($28,913 million divided by 93,792 full-time employees).
