UPS states the figure in the present tense ("We have approximately 460,000 employees") without an as-of date. It appears in the annual report for the year ended December 31, so read each row as the position around that year-end, reported in the following February.
What the number includes
The 2025 10-K says: "We have approximately 460,000 employees (excluding temporary seasonal employees), of which 370,000 are in the U.S. and 90,000 are located internationally."
- Part-time staff are in it. Nearly half the hourly workforce and about a third of management work part-time. Applying those shares, about 220,000 UPS employees are part-time (our calculation from rounded figures).
- Seasonal peak hiring is not. The holiday workforce sits on top of the 460,000.
- It covers subsidiaries and acquisitions, including the supply chain and healthcare logistics businesses, but not businesses UPS has sold, such as UPS Freight (April 2021) and the Coyote truckload brokerage (September 2024).
- Unions: nearly 80% of US employees are represented by unions, about 295,000 of them under the Teamsters national master agreement, which runs to July 31, 2028. About 3,400 pilots are represented by the Independent Pilots Association.
What changed and why
The filings give a reason for each move.
- 2020, up to about 543,000. The 10-K says residential volume growth drove "a 21.5% increase in package delivery stops per day", which "drove additional headcount."
- 2021, about 534,000. UPS sold UPS Freight on April 30, 2021.
- 2023, down 36,000 to about 500,000. The 10-K cites lower labor hours from volume declines and reduced management headcount. UPS launched its "Fit to Serve" initiative in the fourth quarter.
- 2024, about 490,000. Fit to Serve cut about 14,000 positions, "primarily within management", and UPS sold Coyote.
- 2025, down 30,000 to about 460,000. UPS "reduced our operational workforce by approximately 48,000 positions, including 15,000 fewer seasonal positions," and closed daily operations at 93 buildings. Amazon, 10.6% of 2025 revenue, is the customer whose volume UPS planned to cut "by more than 50% by June 2026 from 2024 levels." International headcount rose by 6,000 the same year UPS bought Andlauer Healthcare Group and Frigo-Trans.
Since the 10-K, UPS offered a voluntary separation program, the Driver Choice Program, to all full-time US drivers in the first half of 2026 and recorded about $1.1 billion of separation costs for it, according to its second-quarter 10-Q. Its third-quarter results release says the planned Amazon volume reduction finished in the second quarter of 2026 and the Efficiency Reimagined program runs to the fourth quarter of 2027. Neither filing gives an updated headcount; the next one is due in the 2026 10-K, around February 2027.
Revenue per employee
UPS had consolidated revenue of $88,661 million in 2025. Divided by about 460,000 employees, that's about $193,000 per employee (our calculation).
| Region | 2025 revenue | Employees | Revenue per employee (our calculation) |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | $67.4 billion | 370,000 | about $182,000 |
| International | $21.2 billion | 90,000 | about $236,000 |
| Total | $88.7 billion | about 460,000 | about $193,000 |
By segment, U.S. Domestic Package brought in $59.5 billion, International Package $18.6 billion and Supply Chain Solutions $10.6 billion. The 10-K doesn't split headcount by segment.
Selling to a company of UPS's size
General guidance, not a description of UPS's internal process.
A company of 460,000, most of them hourly and unionized, buys in two very different ways.
- Operations buys at network scale. Anything used in hubs, buildings or vehicles is evaluated per facility and per driver, piloted in a few sites, then rolled out. The 10-K's own programs (network reconfiguration, automation, building closures) tell you which operations budgets are moving.
- Corporate functions buy like any large enterprise: finance, technology, people and procurement teams with formal vendor reviews.
- Workforce change creates demand. Separation programs, consolidation and retraining need HR, communications, learning and real estate support.
- Mind the contract. For anything that changes how union employees work, the Teamsters agreement matters, and the buyer will think about it before you do.

Questions people ask
How many employees does UPS have in the US?
About 370,000, according to UPS's 10-K for 2025, filed February 17, 2026, out of about 460,000 worldwide (excluding temporary seasonal workers). The US count is down from 406,000 a year earlier and 458,000 in the 2020 10-K. Nearly 80% of US employees are represented by unions, most of them under the Teamsters national master agreement.
How many UPS drivers are there?
UPS's 10-K doesn't give a driver count. It reports about 385,000 hourly employees worldwide, nearly half of them part-time, which covers drivers along with package handlers, sorters and mechanics. In 2026 UPS offered a voluntary separation program to all full-time US drivers, but its filings don't say how many accepted.
How many people did UPS lay off?
UPS's filings describe reductions rather than one layoff. Fit to Serve cut about 14,000 positions, mostly in management, during 2024. In 2025 UPS reduced its operational workforce by about 48,000 positions, including 15,000 fewer seasonal positions. In 2026 it ran a voluntary separation program for full-time US drivers. Total headcount fell from about 500,000 in the 2023 10-K to about 460,000 in the 2025 10-K.
How many UPS employees are part-time?
About 220,000, by our calculation from the 2025 10-K: nearly 50% of about 385,000 hourly employees and nearly 35% of about 75,000 management employees work part-time. Both shares are rounded in the filing, so treat the total as approximate. UPS also hires temporary seasonal staff for the holiday peak, who aren't in the 460,000.
Why does UPS have fewer employees than before?
UPS's filings point to lower volume and deliberate restructuring. After a 2020 peak of about 543,000 driven by residential deliveries, UPS sold UPS Freight and Coyote, cut management under Fit to Serve, and in 2025 cut about 48,000 operational positions and closed daily operations at 93 buildings while working to cut volume from Amazon, its largest customer, by more than half by June 2026.
