Short answer
The NAICS code for a restaurant is 722511, Full-Service Restaurants, if customers order and are served while seated and pay after eating, or 722513, Limited-Service Restaurants, if they order and pay before eating (fast food, fast casual, takeout and delivery). Cafeterias and buffets use 722514 and coffee shops 722515. The SIC code for all of them is 5812, Eating Places. If you do several, use the code for the service that brings in the most revenue.
- The test is when the customer pays: after eating is 722511, before eating is 722513.
- County Business Patterns counted 258,626 full-service and 270,088 limited-service restaurants with paid employees in 2023.
- The SBA's small-business limits are $11.5 million in average annual receipts for 722511 and $13.5 million for 722513.
- SIC 5812 maps to seven NAICS codes, so a list built on SIC mixes restaurants with caterers, contract feeders and dinner theaters.
- The SEC files some chains under 5812 and others under 5810, so search EDGAR under both.

This page is for restaurant owners filling in a form that asks for a NAICS or SIC code (SAM.gov, a loan, a tax return) and for sellers listing restaurants by code.
The NAICS codes for restaurants
All four restaurant codes sit in 72251, Restaurants and Other Eating Places, in Sector 72, Accommodation and Food Services. Forms want the six-digit code: SBA size standards and IRS activity codes are set at six digits.
| NAICS 2022 code | Official title | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 722511 | Full-Service Restaurants | Customers order and are served while seated, then pay after eating. May also sell alcohol, offer carryout or present live entertainment. Casual and fine dining, diners and pizzerias with table service. |
| 722513 | Limited-Service Restaurants | Customers order or select items and pay before eating, then eat in, take it away or have it delivered. Fast food, fast casual, delis, sub shops, takeout and pizza delivery. |
| 722514 | Cafeterias, Grill Buffets, and Buffets | Customers choose from a cafeteria line or buffet stations with steam tables and display grills. |
| 722515 | Snack and Nonalcoholic Beverage Bars | Coffee shops, ice cream parlors, juice bars, and bagel, doughnut, pretzel and cookie shops that bake on site. They sell a specialty snack or drink rather than meals. |
How to choose: the payment test and the edge cases
The Census definitions turn on one question: when does the customer pay? If a server takes the order at the table and the bill comes after the meal, the code is 722511. If the customer orders at a counter, kiosk, app or phone and pays first, it's 722513, whether they eat on the premises or not. Price and cuisine don't decide it: the Census index lists "steak houses, limited-service" under 722513 and "pizzerias, full service" under 722511.
| If the business mainly... | Use | What the Census definition says |
|---|---|---|
| Serves seated customers who pay after the meal | 722511 | Waiter or waitress service, pay after eating |
| Takes orders paid up front (counter, drive-through, app, phone) | 722513 | Order and pay before eating |
| Cooks for delivery only, under its own brands | 722513 | No separate code; customers pay before eating (our reading) |
| Runs a cafeteria line or buffet | 722514 | Cafeteria-style or buffet serving equipment |
| Sells coffee, ice cream, juice or baked snacks | 722515 | Specialty snack or nonalcoholic beverage |
| Sells from a food truck or cart | 722330, Mobile Food Services | Meals and snacks from vehicles or carts |
| Caters events, or runs a banquet hall with catering staff | 722320, Caterers | Single event-based food services |
| Runs food service at a client's site (school, hospital, airline) | 722310, Food Service Contractors | Contract with the organization for a set period |
| Is a bar or tavern selling mainly drinks | 722410, Drinking Places | Known as bars, taverns or nightclubs |
| Is a brew pub | 722511 if mainly meals with table service; 722410 if mainly drinks | Two separate index entries |
| Takes and delivers orders for other restaurants | 492210, Local Messengers and Local Delivery | Independent order and delivery services |
Private clubs with dining rooms (813410) and dinner theaters (711110) have their own codes too. If you do two of these things, use the code for the one that earns the most: the IRS Schedule C instructions say to pick "the principal source of your sales or receipts." A sit-down restaurant with a catering side stays 722511 while table service earns more, and lists 722320 as an extra code where a form allows several. For chains, a head office that only manages the restaurants is 551114, Corporate, Subsidiary, and Regional Managing Offices, and a franchisor that only licenses its brand is 533110, Lessors of Nonfinancial Intangible Assets.
SIC codes for restaurants
The SIC code for restaurants is 5812, Eating Places. Bars are 5813, Drinking Places. SIC's last edition is from 1987, and the Census Bureau's concordance maps 5812 to seven NAICS 2022 codes:
| SIC 1987 | NAICS 2022 codes it maps to |
|---|---|
| 5812 Eating Places | 722511 Full-service restaurants, 722513 Limited-service restaurants, 722514 Cafeterias and buffets, 722515 Snack and nonalcoholic beverage bars, 722320 Caterers, 722310 Food service contractors, 711110 Dinner theaters |
| 5813 Drinking Places | 722410 Drinking places (alcoholic beverages) |
The mapping isn't one to one in either direction: 722515 also takes part of SIC 5461, Retail Bakeries, and the food truck code 722330 maps to SIC 5963, Direct Selling Establishments. To convert other codes, use the NAICS to SIC converter. The SEC keeps its own shorter list: restaurant companies on EDGAR carry 5812 (Retail-Eating Places) or 5810 (Retail-Eating & Drinking Places, a group code), and there's no 5813.
How many US restaurants use each code
County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023, the Census Bureau's count of establishments with paid employees:
| NAICS code | Establishments | Employees | Annual payroll |
|---|---|---|---|
| 722511 Full-service restaurants | 258,626 | 5,387,020 | $150.9 billion |
| 722513 Limited-service restaurants | 270,088 | 4,965,080 | $103.6 billion |
| 722514 Cafeterias, grill buffets and buffets | 4,622 | 68,901 | $1.6 billion |
| 722515 Snack and nonalcoholic beverage bars | 85,140 | 985,583 | $20.9 billion |
| 7225 Restaurants and other eating places | 618,476 | 11,406,584 | $276.9 billion |
Full-service restaurants are fewer but employ more people and pay more: about $28,000 in payroll per employee against $20,900 (our calculation; part-time staff count as whole employees).
| Employees per location | 722511 Full-service | 722513 Limited-service |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 5 | 67,995 | 65,630 |
| 5 to 9 | 44,203 | 43,726 |
| 10 to 19 | 54,634 | 66,562 |
| 20 to 49 | 63,904 | 76,693 |
| 50 to 99 | 22,751 | 15,345 |
| 100 or more | 5,138 | 2,132 |
The top five states match. Full-service: California 31,333, Texas 20,819, New York 19,661, Florida 18,200 and Illinois 9,928. Limited-service: California 34,527, Texas 24,360, New York 17,791, Florida 15,969 and Illinois 10,622.
CBP counts locations with paid employees, not companies: a 40-restaurant chain counts 40 times, and owner-only restaurants aren't counted. CBP 2023 uses NAICS 2017, but no restaurant code changed in 2022, so the counts match the codes above.
SBA size standards for restaurant codes
For federal contracts, the SBA compares your average annual receipts over your latest five complete fiscal years, including affiliates', with the standard for the contract's code. From the SBA's Table of Size Standards, effective March 17, 2023 (13 CFR 121.201 on the eCFR shows no later change):
| NAICS code | Small if average annual receipts are no more than |
|---|---|
| 722511 Full-service restaurants | $11.5 million |
| 722513 Limited-service restaurants | $13.5 million |
| 722514 Cafeterias, grill buffets and buffets | $34.0 million |
| 722515 Snack and nonalcoholic beverage bars | $22.5 million |
| 722310 Food service contractors | $47.0 million |
| 722320 Caterers | $9.0 million |
| 722330 Mobile food services and 722410 Drinking places | $9.0 million |
The small business size standards page explains how receipts and affiliates are counted.
Where the code is used and what a wrong one costs
- Federal contracts. You list codes in SAM.gov, but the contracting officer sets one code per contract and your size is judged against it. A restaurant with $12 million in receipts is small for a 722513 contract but not a 722511 one. Any interested party can appeal a solicitation's code to the SBA's Office of Hearings and Appeals within 10 days of its publication.
- Tax returns. The IRS activity codes match NAICS for restaurants (722511, 722513, 722514, 722515, 722410), but caterers and contract feeders share one IRS code, 722300, Special food services.
Finding restaurant companies by code
EDGAR lists public companies by SIC: SIC 5812 and SIC 5810. Some of the largest, with total revenue from each company's latest 10-K:
| Company | EDGAR SIC | Headquarters | Revenue, latest 10-K |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starbucks | 5810 | Seattle, WA | $37.18 billion (year to 28 Sept 2025) |
| McDonald's | 5812 | Chicago, IL | $26.89 billion (2025) |
| Darden Restaurants | 5812 | Orlando, FL | $13.21 billion (year to 31 May 2026) |
| Chipotle Mexican Grill | 5812 | Newport Beach, CA | $11.93 billion (2025) |
| Yum! Brands | 5812 | Louisville, KY | $8.21 billion (2025) |
| Wendy's | 5810 | Dublin, OH | $2.18 billion (2025) |
These are worldwide figures including franchise royalties and fees, and EDGAR's SIC isn't a NAICS code: Aramark, a food service contractor, is also filed under 5812. Public chains are a sliver of the 618,476 locations CBP counts. For independents and franchisees, health department permits and liquor licenses are the public lists (see selling to restaurants), and a Bebop search takes the same distinctions in plain language (full-service or quick-service, number of locations, state) and returns companies and contacts with the reason each fits.
Worked example: coding a restaurant group
Illustrative example. The company and figures are invented.
Copper Fork Hospitality (copperfork.example) runs three sit-down restaurants and a catering business in Ohio. Last year the restaurants took $7.4 million and catering $1.9 million. Average annual receipts over five fiscal years: $8.6 million.
- Primary code. Restaurants are 80% of revenue ($7.4 million of $9.3 million) and guests pay after eating: 722511.
- Extra code. It adds 722320, Caterers, in SAM.gov to show up for catering solicitations.
- Size check. $8.6 million is under the 722511 limit of $11.5 million. Under the caterers' $9.0 million it's small with only $0.4 million to spare, so that's the line growth crosses first.
- Other forms. A bank form asking for SIC gets 5812. On a Schedule C it would also be 722511; a caterer-first business would use 722300.
Next step: if you sell to restaurants rather than run one, read selling to restaurants for who decides at independents, franchises and chains, and where to find new openings.

Questions people ask
What is the NAICS code for a restaurant?
Use 722511, Full-Service Restaurants, if customers order and are served while seated and pay after eating. Use 722513, Limited-Service Restaurants, if they order and pay before eating, whether they eat in, take out or get delivery. Cafeterias and buffets are 722514, and coffee shops, ice cream parlors and juice bars are 722515. All four are part of NAICS 72251, Restaurants and Other Eating Places.
What is the SIC code for a restaurant?
SIC 5812, Eating Places, covers restaurants of every kind, plus caterers, contract food service and dinner theaters. Bars and taverns are SIC 5813, Drinking Places. On SEC EDGAR, restaurant companies are filed under 5812 (Retail-Eating Places) or 5810 (Retail-Eating & Drinking Places), so search both when you look for public restaurant companies.
What NAICS code is a fast food restaurant?
Fast food is 722513, Limited-Service Restaurants, the same code as fast casual, takeout, delis, sub shops and pizza delivery. The deciding feature is that customers order and pay before they eat. The SBA treats a 722513 business as small if its average annual receipts over five years are no more than $13.5 million, under the standards effective March 17, 2023.
What is the NAICS code for a food truck?
A food truck or cart is 722330, Mobile Food Services, not a restaurant code. The Census Bureau classifies the central location the trucks work from, not each vehicle. County Business Patterns counted 12,487 mobile food service establishments with paid employees in 2023. The SBA size standard is $9.0 million in average annual receipts, and the closest SIC code is 5963, Direct Selling Establishments.
Is a coffee shop a restaurant in NAICS?
Not usually. A coffee shop that brews on the premises is 722515, Snack and Nonalcoholic Beverage Bars, along with ice cream parlors, juice bars and bakery cafes. If it mainly sells meals such as sandwiches or hot food paid for at the counter, it fits 722513 instead. Census counted 85,140 snack and beverage bars with paid employees in 2023.
What NAICS code is a bar that serves food?
If it's known as a bar, tavern or nightclub and mainly sells drinks, it's 722410, Drinking Places, even with a limited menu. If it mainly serves meals and also sells alcohol, it stays in the restaurant codes: 722511 with table service, 722513 with counter service. Brew pubs follow the same split. The SIC codes are 5813 for bars and 5812 for restaurants.
