Short answer
The largest retailers in the US by US retail revenue are Walmart ($576.0 billion from Walmart U.S. and Sam's Club U.S. in the year to January 2026), Amazon ($426.3 billion from its North America segment in 2025), Costco ($219.8 billion in the US in the year to August 2026), Home Depot ($152.2 billion) and Kroger ($147.6 billion). We took each figure from the company's latest 10-K, using its US segment where it reports one.
- Walmart's US revenue is $149.7 billion more than Amazon's whole North America segment, which also includes Canada, Mexico, advertising and subscriptions.
- Americans spent $7.32 trillion at retailers in 2025, $5.69 trillion of it outside car and parts dealers (Census Bureau).
- Nonstore retailers, mostly ecommerce, sold $1.36 trillion in 2025, more than grocery stores ($911.3 billion).
- Walgreens no longer files annual reports after a merger completed on August 28, 2025 took it private, so it drops out of SEC-based rankings.
- Seven of the 26 are warehouse clubs, dollar stores or off-price chains: Costco, BJ's, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, TJX, Ross and Burlington.

This list is for sellers, suppliers, analysts and job seekers who need a sourced ranking of the biggest retailers in the US and want the US number, not the global one. It ranks public retailers by the US retail revenue in their latest annual report on Form 10-K filed by 30 October 2026, using the US segment where the company reports one, and sets the figures against the Census Bureau's retail sales totals for 2025.

Revenue is as each 10-K reports it. Where a company reports a US segment or US sales, we use that; otherwise the company total, which for most of these retailers is almost all US. Headquarters are the business addresses on file with the SEC. Employee counts are as each filing words them; Tractor Supply's and Dick's figures are our sums of the full-time and part-time numbers the filings give.
Rows that need a note:
- Amazon's North America segment ($426.3 billion) includes Canada and Mexico, plus advertising, subscriptions and third-party seller fees as well as its own retail sales. Amazon doesn't report US-only retail sales, so it is the least like-for-like row.
- CVS's Pharmacy & Consumer Wellness segment runs its retail pharmacies and stores, and includes sales to other CVS segments before eliminations. CVS's $402.1 billion company total is mostly health insurance and pharmacy benefits.
- Costco's fiscal year ended August 30, 2026, eight months after the calendar year; its US revenue grew from $200.0 billion to $219.8 billion.
- Walgreens is missing because it completed a merger on August 28, 2025 that took it private, and it no longer files 10-Ks. Large private chains such as Aldi, H-E-B and Meijer publish no audited US results, so they aren't ranked.
How big US retail is
The Census Bureau's Monthly Retail Trade survey puts US retail sales for 2025 at:
| Kind of business | 2025 sales | Largest public retailers in it |
|---|---|---|
| All retail and food services | $8.35 trillion | |
| Retail sales, total | $7.32 trillion | |
| Retail excluding motor vehicle and parts dealers | $5.69 trillion | |
| Nonstore retailers (mostly ecommerce) | $1.36 trillion | Amazon, Chewy, Wayfair |
| Food and beverage stores | $1.01 trillion | Kroger, Albertsons, Publix |
| General merchandise stores | $938.1 billion | Walmart, Costco, Target, Dollar General |
| of which warehouse clubs and supercenters | $787.4 billion | Walmart, Costco, BJ's |
| Gasoline stations | $633.7 billion | |
| Building materials and garden | $505.3 billion | Home Depot, Lowe's, Tractor Supply |
| Health and personal care stores | $472.3 billion | CVS, Ulta |
| Clothing and accessories | $299.9 billion | TJX, Ross, Gap, Burlington |
Source: US Census Bureau, Estimates of Monthly Retail and Food Services Sales by Kind of Business, 2025 totals (not seasonally adjusted, subject to revision). Census counts sales by store type, so a retailer's revenue doesn't map exactly to one row.
As a rough guide, Walmart's $576.0 billion of US revenue equals about 10% of the $5.69 trillion spent at retailers other than car dealers (our calculation; Walmart's year runs February to January and its segment figures include fuel and ecommerce). Home Depot and Lowe's together took in $238.5 billion, about 47% of the $505.3 billion sold by building materials and garden stores.
How we built the list
- Who counts. US-headquartered public companies whose main business is selling goods to consumers. Restaurants, car dealers and gas station chains are left out.
- What's counted. US retail revenue as each 10-K reports it: the US segment where there is one (Walmart, Amazon, Costco, Home Depot, CVS, TJX, Best Buy), otherwise the company total.
- Which year. The latest fiscal year with a 10-K filed by 30 October 2026. Most retailers end their year around January 31.
- Checking. Every figure was matched to the 10-K. The National Retail Federation's annual Top 100 ranks by US retail sales and includes private chains, so its figures and order differ from these. Several aggregator pages in the top results repeat older figures: one still gives Walmart's US retail sales as $459.51 billion.
What the list is good for if you sell B2B
Know where retail buying sits. General guidance, not drawn from the filings. At large retailers, merchandising teams buy what goes on the shelves; goods-not-for-resale (store fixtures, technology, facilities, logistics, marketing services) go through indirect procurement, with store operations, supply chain and IT owning the requirements. Selling to merchants and selling to procurement are different motions.
Size by store count and headcount, not revenue alone. A software or services deal priced by store or by employee depends on the footprint: Dollar General employs about 194,000 people for $42.7 billion of sales, while Costco employs 232,000 in the US for $219.8 billion. Our guide to selling to retailers covers the buying process in more depth, and our list of the largest grocery companies covers the food side.
Use fiscal calendars. Most retailers close their year at the end of January and lock budgets in the weeks before. Planning conversations in late summer and autumn, before holiday trading, usually land better than a January pitch.
Worked example
Illustrative example. Shelfwise (shelfwise.example) sells store-level task management software at an illustrative $15 per store employee per year. Its seller compares two accounts from this list:
- Ross Stores: about 111,000 associates, so a full rollout is worth 111,000 x $15 = about $1.7 million a year.
- Burlington: 83,309 associates, 79% of them part-time or seasonal, so about 65,800 part-time and seasonal workers. A rollout to those alone is worth 65,800 x $15 = about $987,000 a year.
Both are off-price chains with similar store models, so a win at one becomes a reference for the other. The seller targets the head of store operations and the store systems leader in IT at each, and opens with the cost of onboarding seasonal staff. Finding those leaders and what's changed at each chain is the slow part; Bebop researches each account in a list like this.

Questions people ask
What is the largest retailer in the US?
Walmart. Its Walmart U.S. and Sam's Club U.S. segments reported $576.0 billion of net sales in the fiscal year to January 31, 2026, according to its 10-K, and it employs about 1.6 million people in the US. Amazon's North America segment, which also covers Canada, Mexico and services such as advertising, reported $426.3 billion for 2025.
What are the top 10 retailers in the US?
By US retail revenue in their latest 10-Ks: Walmart ($576.0 billion), Amazon ($426.3 billion, North America), Costco ($219.8 billion), Home Depot ($152.2 billion), Kroger ($147.6 billion), CVS Health's retail pharmacy segment ($139.4 billion), Target ($104.8 billion), Lowe's ($86.3 billion), Albertsons ($83.2 billion) and Publix ($63.2 billion). Fiscal years differ by up to eight months.
Is Amazon bigger than Walmart?
In total revenue, yes: Amazon reported $716.9 billion for 2025 against Walmart's $713.2 billion for its year to January 2026. But Amazon's total includes AWS cloud services ($128.7 billion) and international sales. In US retail Walmart is clearly larger: $576.0 billion from its US segments against $426.3 billion for Amazon's whole North America segment.
How much do Americans spend at retailers each year?
$7.32 trillion in 2025, according to the Census Bureau's Monthly Retail Trade survey, or $8.35 trillion including restaurants and bars. Excluding car and parts dealers, retail sales were $5.69 trillion. Nonstore retailers, mostly ecommerce, accounted for $1.36 trillion, and grocery stores for $911.3 billion. The annual figures are revised as later surveys come in.
Why isn't Walgreens on the list?
Walgreens Boots Alliance completed a merger on August 28, 2025 that took the company private, according to its final filings with the SEC, so it no longer files annual reports with audited revenue. This list ranks companies by the figures in their 10-Ks. Other large private chains, such as Aldi, H-E-B and Meijer, are missing for the same reason.
