Short answer
The SIC code for architects is 8712, Architectural Services, and it maps one to one to NAICS 541310, Architectural Services: planning and designing buildings and structures using knowledge of design, construction, zoning, building codes and materials. Landscape architects use NAICS 541320 (SIC 0781), interior designers 541410 and engineers 541330 (SIC 8711). A firm that designs and builds, or manages construction, belongs in construction sector 23 instead.
- 541310 had 22,805 establishments with paid employees in 2023 and 189,468 employees; 63.6% had fewer than five employees.
- Design-build firms aren't architects in NAICS: the 541310 cross-references send design plus construction to sector 23.
- SBA size standard: $12.5 million in average annual receipts for 541310, $9.0 million for 541320 and 541410.
- Federal agencies obligated $728.9 million under 541310 in fiscal 2025, against $51.68 billion under engineering, 541330.
- Federal A-E firms are chosen on qualifications, not price, and design fees on public works are capped at 6% of estimated construction cost.

This page is for architects and office managers filling in an industry code for professional liability insurance, a bank, a state or city vendor registration or SAM.gov, and for sellers building lists of architecture firms.
The SIC code: 8712
SIC 8712, Architectural Services, sits in Major Group 87, Engineering, Accounting, Research, Management, and Related Services. The 1987 manual defines it in one line: establishments "primarily engaged in providing professional architectural services." The Census concordance maps it to a single NAICS code, 541310, and 541310 draws on no other SIC code, so the conversion is exact in both directions.
Two cautions. Six- and eight-digit "SIC codes" such as 8712-02 come from commercial list vendors, not the official manual, which stops at four digits. And the SEC's own SIC list has no 8712: public architecture and engineering firms file under 8711, Services-Engineering Services, or elsewhere.
The NAICS codes for architecture and design
| NAICS 2022 | Official title | What it covers | SIC | Establishments, 2023 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 541310 | Architectural Services | Planning and designing residential, institutional, leisure, commercial and industrial buildings and structures | 8712 | 22,805 |
| 541320 | Landscape Architectural Services | Planning and designing land areas: parks, campuses, subdivisions, golf courses; also urban and town planners | 0781, part of 8748 | 5,176 |
| 541410 | Interior Design Services | Planning, designing and administering projects in interior spaces, and interior decorating consultants | Part of 7389 | 16,797 |
| 541330 | Engineering Services | Applying engineering principles to design and develop structures, systems and processes | 8711 | 63,233 |
| 541340 | Drafting Services | Drawing detailed layouts and plans from engineering and architectural specifications | Part of 7389 | 2,963 |
The 541310 definition is about knowledge, not tools: the Census Bureau describes architects as applying "knowledge of design, construction procedures, zoning regulations, building codes, and building materials." Its index adds architectural construction specifications consulting.
How to choose: the edge cases
| If your firm mainly... | Use | Not |
|---|---|---|
| Designs buildings and produces construction documents | 541310 | 541330 |
| Designs and builds, as a design-build contractor | The sector 23 code for the type of project, such as 236220 | 541310 |
| Manages construction projects for owners | The sector 23 code for the type of project | 541310 |
| Designs parks, campuses, streetscapes or land use plans | 541320 | 541310 |
| Designs landscapes and also installs and maintains them | 561730 Landscaping Services | 541320 |
| Designs interiors, specifies finishes and furniture | 541410 | 541310 |
| Engineers structures, MEP systems or civil works | 541330 | 541310 |
| Turns other people's designs into CAD drawings | 541340 | 541310 |
| Inspects buildings for code compliance | 541350 Building Inspection Services | 541310 |
| Is a city planning department | 925120 Administration of Urban Planning | 541320 |
The design-build row comes straight from the Census cross-references: establishments doing "both the design and construction of buildings" or "managing construction projects" are classified in construction by type of project. See the NAICS code for general contractors for those codes. Landscape firms that install should check the landscaping code page.
A firm that does architecture and engineering under one roof should take the code for the larger fee base and list the other as secondary. On federal bids that matters, as the spending figures below show.
How many architecture firms there are
County Business Patterns 2023 counts 22,805 architecture establishments with 189,468 employees and $18.7 billion in annual payroll, about $98,720 per employee and 8.3 employees per establishment (our calculations).
| Employees | 541310 establishments | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 5 | 14,512 | 63.6% |
| 5 to 9 | 4,011 | 17.6% |
| 10 to 19 | 2,315 | 10.2% |
| 20 to 49 | 1,341 | 5.9% |
| 50 to 99 | 419 | 1.8% |
| 100 to 249 | 175 | 0.8% |
| 250 or more | 32 | 0.1% |
The top states are California (3,723 establishments), New York (2,099), Florida (1,741), Texas (1,641), Illinois (944), Colorado (844), Massachusetts (728) and Washington (723). Landscape architecture (541320) is smaller: 5,176 establishments averaging 5.6 employees. CBP counts offices with paid employees, so a firm with three studios counts three times and sole practitioners with no staff aren't counted. It uses NAICS 2017 codes; none of these changed in 2022.
SBA size standards and how the government buys design
From SBA's table effective 17 March 2023, still current in the eCFR on 28 October 2026, in average annual receipts: 541310 is $12.5 million, 541320 and 541410 are $9.0 million, 541340 is $9.0 million and 541330 is $25.5 million.
Federal design is bought differently from almost everything else. Under FAR subpart 36.6, which implements 40 U.S.C. 1101 and following, agencies negotiate architect-engineer contracts "on the basis of demonstrated competence and qualifications," at fair and reasonable prices. The selection criteria cover qualifications, specialized experience, capacity, past performance and location; price isn't among them, and the fee is negotiated with the top-ranked firm. Firms file Standard Form 330 to be considered, and FAR 15.404-4 caps the fee for designs, plans, drawings and specifications on public works or utilities at 6% of the estimated construction cost.
Federal contract obligations from USAspending.gov:
| NAICS | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|
| 541330 Engineering Services | $52.51 billion | $51.68 billion |
| 541310 Architectural Services | $964.7 million | $728.9 million |
| 541320 Landscape Architectural Services | $49.8 million | $119.0 million |
| 541410 Interior Design Services | $31.5 million | $31.1 million |
The largest buyers under 541310 in fiscal 2025 were the Department of Defense ($231.6 million), GSA ($153.6 million), Veterans Affairs ($83.0 million) and State ($80.1 million). With 70 times as much obligated under 541330, and one code per solicitation, an architecture firm with engineers on staff should list 541330 too.
Where the code is used, and what a wrong one costs
- Insurers and lenders. They use the code to find your peer group, and architecture, engineering and design-build carry different risks, so give the code that matches your fees.
- Tax returns. Schedule C and Form 1120 use 541310 for architectural services and 541320 for landscape architecture.
- Federal and state bids. A firm registered only as 541310 won't appear when a contracting officer searches 541330 for A-E firms.
Finding architecture firms by code
Architecture firms are almost all private, and the SEC has no architecture code. Public firms that do architecture alongside engineering file under SIC 8711 or elsewhere:
| Company | SEC SIC | Revenue, latest fiscal year | Note from its 10-K |
|---|---|---|---|
| AECOM (Dallas, TX) | 8711 Engineering Services | $16,139.6 million, year ended 30 September 2025 | Provides "architectural and engineering design" among other services |
| Jacobs Solutions (Dallas, TX) | 1600, a heavy construction code | $12,029.8 million, year ended 26 September 2025 | Filed under a construction code, so an 8711 search misses it |
For the private firms, state architecture licensing boards publish license lookups, and the USAspending recipient search filtered to 541310 names firms that won federal design work. Bebop finds firms from a description, such as healthcare architecture practices with 20 to 100 employees in the Midwest.
Worked example
Illustrative example. The firm and its figures are invented; the rules are FAR's and SBA's.
Meridian Architecture (meridian.example) has 14 employees. Last year it earned $2.1 million from building design, $0.4 million from interiors and $0.2 million from landscape plans: $2.7 million in all.
- Codes. Building design is 77.8% of revenue, so the primary code is 541310 (SIC 8712), with 541410 and 541320 as secondary codes.
- Size. Five-year average receipts of $2.3 million are well under the $12.5 million standard.
- A federal clinic. Veterans Affairs plans a clinic with an estimated construction cost of $12.0 million. Meridian files its SF 330; if it's ranked first, the design fee it negotiates can't exceed 6% of $12.0 million, or $720,000.
Next step: if you also build what you design, see the codes on the NAICS code for general contractors page.

Questions people ask
What is the SIC code for architects?
SIC 8712, Architectural Services, for establishments primarily engaged in providing professional architectural services. It sits in Major Group 87 of the 1987 SIC manual and maps one to one to NAICS 541310. Landscape architects use SIC 0781, Landscape Counseling and Planning, and engineers use SIC 8711. Six-digit codes such as 8712-02 come from list vendors, not the official manual.
What is the NAICS code for architecture?
541310, Architectural Services, which covers planning and designing residential, institutional, leisure, commercial and industrial buildings and structures. Landscape architecture is 541320, interior design 541410 and engineering 541330. Firms that both design and build, or manage construction, are classified in construction sector 23 by type of project, not in 541310.
What is the NAICS code for an architecture and engineering firm?
Use the code for the service that earns more: 541310 if architecture leads, 541330 if engineering does, and list the other as a secondary code. On federal work, list both, because agencies posted $51.68 billion of contract obligations under 541330 in fiscal 2025 against $728.9 million under 541310, and each solicitation names only one code.
What is the SBA size standard for NAICS 541310?
$12.5 million in average annual receipts, in SBA's table effective 17 March 2023. Receipts are averaged over your last five completed fiscal years and include affiliates. Landscape architecture (541320) and interior design (541410) are $9.0 million, and engineering services (541330) is $25.5 million, with higher standards for some military and marine engineering work.
How does the federal government hire architects?
Through qualifications-based selection under FAR subpart 36.6. Agencies publicize each requirement, firms submit Standard Form 330, and the agency ranks them on qualifications, specialized experience, capacity, past performance and location before negotiating a fee with the top firm. For public works and utilities, the fee for designs and plans can't exceed 6% of estimated construction cost.
