Short answer
There's no NAICS code for cybersecurity. Most security firms use 541512 Computer Systems Design Services (designing and integrating secure systems), 541519 Other Computer Related Services (assessments, monitoring, incident response, recovery) or 513210 Software Publishers (security software, including subscriptions). Firms running a client's systems on site use 541513, and custom security code is 541511. Avoid 561621 and 561612, which are physical alarms and guards. The SIC codes are 7373, 7379 and 7372.
- The Census Bureau's 2022 NAICS index has no entry for cybersecurity, cyber or information security.
- On USAspending.gov, FY2025 federal contracts matching "cybersecurity" were coded mostly 541519 ($467.3 million), 541330 ($397.5 million) and 541512 ($389.6 million).
- SBA size standards: $34.0 million for 541511, 541512 and 541519; $37.0 million for 541513; $47.0 million for 513210.
- Listed security companies file under at least three SIC codes on EDGAR: 3577, 7372 and 7371.
- The security codes that look right (561621, 561612, 928110) are physical security, guards and national security government agencies.
On this page
This page is for cybersecurity firms filling in a NAICS or SIC field (SAM.gov, a GSA schedule or prime contractor form, an insurer, an investor data room) and for sellers building lists of security companies.
There's no cybersecurity NAICS code
NAICS groups businesses by production process, not by subject, and the Census Bureau's 2022 NAICS index file has no entry containing cybersecurity, cyber or information security. A security firm takes the code for the kind of work it does. These are the candidates:
| Code | Official title | When a security firm fits it |
|---|---|---|
| 541512 | Computer Systems Design Services | You plan, design and integrate systems: security architecture, network and identity design, deploying security tools into a client's environment |
| 541519 | Other Computer Related Services | You provide computer services other than programming, integration and facilities management; the Census definition names computer disaster recovery. Assessments, testing, monitoring and incident response fit here |
| 541513 | Computer Facilities Management Services | You manage and operate a client's computer systems on site, for example running their security operations |
| 541511 | Custom Computer Programming Services | You write custom security software for specific clients |
| 513210 | Software Publishers | You publish security software, sold by license, subscription or download |
| 518210 | Computing Infrastructure Providers, Data Processing, Web Hosting, and Related Services | You process clients' data or host their systems at your own facility |
| 541690 | Other Scientific and Technical Consulting Services | The Census index lists "security consulting services" here, but the code covers technical consulting outside computing; use it for security advice that isn't about computer systems |
Codes that look right but aren't
| Code | Official title | Why it's wrong for cyber |
|---|---|---|
| 561621 | Security Systems Services (except Locksmiths) | Installing and monitoring burglar and fire alarms and other physical security systems |
| 561612 | Security Guards and Patrol Services | Guards and patrols |
| 928110 | National Security | Government military and national security agencies, not contractors |
How to choose
NAICS classifies by primary activity, measured in practice by revenue, so add up last year's revenue by type of work:
| Most of your revenue comes from... | Primary code |
|---|---|
| Architecture, implementation and integration projects | 541512 |
| Penetration tests, risk and compliance assessments, monitoring, incident response, recovery | 541519 |
| Running a client's security operations or IT on site | 541513 |
| Your own security product, sold as software or a subscription | 513210 |
| Reselling multi-vendor security hardware and software with significant services (configuration, integration, support) | 541519, under the SBA's IT value added reseller exception (150 employees) |
| Building custom security tools to order | 541511 |
Then list the others you'd bid under. On federal work the contracting officer, not you, assigns one code to each solicitation, and federal spending shows how spread out those choices are. On USAspending.gov, contract obligations in fiscal year 2025 on awards matching the keyword "cybersecurity" were coded:
| NAICS code | FY2025 obligations |
|---|---|
| 541519 Other Computer Related Services | $467.3 million |
| 541330 Engineering Services | $397.5 million |
| 541512 Computer Systems Design Services | $389.6 million |
| 541511 Custom Computer Programming Services | $172.2 million |
| 541712 Research and Development (a 2017 code still on older contracts) | $166.3 million |
| 541513 Computer Facilities Management Services | $122.7 million |
| 541611 Administrative and General Management Consulting Services | $36.6 million |
Keyword matching is broad, so treat these as a guide to which codes agencies use, not a measure of the cyber market. The practical lesson: a security contractor registered only under 541512 misses work coded 541519, 541330 and 541513.
The SIC codes for cybersecurity
SIC has no security code either. The SIC equivalents of the codes above:
| SIC | Title | NAICS 2022 |
|---|---|---|
| 7373 | Computer Integrated Systems Design | 541512 |
| 7379 | Computer Related Services, NEC | 541512, 541519, 518210 |
| 7371 | Computer Programming Services | 541511 |
| 7372 | Prepackaged Software | 513210 |
| 7376 | Computer Facilities Management Services | 541513 |
| 7382 | Security Systems Services | 561621 (physical security, not cyber) |
The SEC's EDGAR list uses these codes too, and listed security companies are scattered across them: Palo Alto Networks and Fortinet file under 3577 (computer peripheral equipment), CrowdStrike and Okta under 7372, Zscaler under 7371.
How many businesses use these codes
County Business Patterns 2023 counts establishments with paid employees on a 2017 NAICS basis. It can't isolate security firms, because NAICS doesn't, but it sizes the codes they sit in:
| Code | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| 541511 Custom Computer Programming Services | 68,051 | 1,012,250 |
| 541512 Computer Systems Design Services | 58,113 | 766,160 |
| 541519 Other Computer Related Services | 13,275 | 168,654 |
| 541513 Computer Facilities Management Services | 6,374 | 103,562 |
| 513210 Software Publishers (counted as 2017 code 511210) | 18,425 | 1,011,187 |
Software Publishers moved from 511210 to 513210 in the 2022 revision, so CBP 2023 still reports it under 511210. The top states for 541512 are California (7,616), Texas (7,226), Virginia (3,968), Florida (3,819) and New York (3,105). Of the 13,275 establishments in 541519, 10,281 have fewer than five employees.
SBA size standards
From the SBA's table effective March 17, 2023:
| Code | Size standard |
|---|---|
| 541511, 541512, 541519 | $34.0 million in average annual receipts |
| 541519 (IT value added resellers exception) | 150 employees |
| 541513 | $37.0 million |
| 518210 | $40.0 million |
| 513210 | $47.0 million |
| 541330 Engineering Services | $25.5 million ($47.0 million for military and aerospace equipment and weapons) |
The engineering exception matters for cyber work on weapons systems: a contract coded 541330 under the military exception carries the $47.0 million standard.
Finding cybersecurity companies
Because there's no code, a code-based list of "cybersecurity companies" is really a list of IT services and software firms. The largest listed security vendors, from their latest 10-K:
| Company | EDGAR SIC | Headquarters | Revenue | Fiscal year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Palo Alto Networks | 3577 | Santa Clara, CA | $11,480 million | Year ended July 31, 2026 |
| Fortinet | 3577 | Sunnyvale, CA | $6,799.6 million | 2025 |
| CrowdStrike | 7372 | Austin, TX | $4,812.0 million | Year ended January 31, 2026 |
| Zscaler | 7371 | Santa Clara, CA | $3,352.5 million | Year ended July 31, 2026 |
| Okta | 7372 | San Francisco, CA | $2,919 million | Year ended January 31, 2026 |
For the ranked list, see the largest cybersecurity companies. For private firms, a better filter than the code is what they say about themselves: services pages, certifications, the frameworks they audit against and the roles they hire. Bebop finds security firms from a plain-language description and researches each account.
Worked example
Illustrative example. The company and figures are invented to show the method.
Bastion Ridge Security (bastionridge.example) has 60 employees in Maryland. Revenue: 45% managed detection and response from its own operations center, 30% penetration tests and compliance assessments, 25% security architecture and tool deployment projects.
- Primary code: 541519. Monitoring and response plus assessments are services, 75% of revenue.
- Other codes in SAM.gov: 541512 for architecture projects, 541513 for on-site operations work, and 541330 because agencies code some cyber engineering work there.
- Size check: average annual receipts of $14.5 million. Small under 541519 and 541512 ($34.0 million) and under 541330 ($25.5 million).
- SIC for a bank form: 7379.
Next step: compare the codes for the rest of IT on the NAICS code for IT consulting page.

Questions people ask
What is the NAICS code for cybersecurity?
There isn't one; the 2022 NAICS index has no cybersecurity entry. Security services firms usually use 541519 Other Computer Related Services or 541512 Computer Systems Design Services, depending on whether most revenue comes from services (assessments, monitoring, incident response) or from designing and integrating systems. Security software companies use 513210 Software Publishers, and firms running clients' operations on site use 541513.
What is the SIC code for cyber security?
SIC has no cybersecurity code either. Use 7373 Computer Integrated Systems Design for integration work, 7379 Computer Related Services, NEC for other security services, 7372 Prepackaged Software for security products and 7371 Computer Programming Services for custom development. SIC 7382, Security Systems Services, is physical alarm and monitoring work. On EDGAR, listed security vendors file under 3577, 7372 and 7371.
Is 541512 or 541519 better for a cybersecurity company?
Use the one that matches most of your revenue. 541512 is for planning, designing and integrating computer systems; 541519 is for other computer services, and its Census definition names disaster recovery. Both have a $34.0 million SBA size standard. On federal bids the solicitation's code decides, and FY2025 cyber contracts used 541519 slightly more than 541512, so register both.
What NAICS code do federal cybersecurity contracts use?
Several. On USAspending.gov, FY2025 contract obligations on awards matching "cybersecurity" were coded mostly 541519 ($467.3 million), 541330 Engineering Services ($397.5 million) and 541512 ($389.6 million), followed by 541511, 541712 and 541513. The contracting officer assigns one code per solicitation under FAR 19.102, and that code's size standard applies to every bidder.
Is NAICS 561621 for cybersecurity?
No. 561621, Security Systems Services (except Locksmiths), covers installing, maintaining and monitoring physical security systems such as burglar and fire alarms. Likewise 561612 is security guards and 928110 is government national security agencies. A cybersecurity firm registered under these codes will be matched with alarm and guard work, not IT security opportunities.
