SIC code for pest control: 7342, and NAICS 561710

This page is for pest control operators filling in a form that asks for a SIC or NAICS code (a bank, an insurer, a commercial client's vendor setup, SAM.gov) and for sellers of vehicles, chemicals, software and insurance building a list of pest control companies.

The codes for pest control

The Census index for 561710 lists exterminating, fumigating (except crop fumigating), termite control, pest and termite inspection, mosquito eradication and bird proofing. 561710 sits in 5617, Services to Buildings and Dwellings, alongside janitorial and landscaping services.

How the SIC and NAICS codes map

The Census Bureau's concordance splits SIC 7342 in two and brings in a piece of another SIC code:

So a list built on SIC 7342 picks up disinfecting and sanitizing companies, and one built on NAICS 561710 picks up mosquito control businesses that an old SIC list filed under 4959. If you're converting a whole list, the NAICS to SIC converter shows the other direction.

How to choose: pest control and the edge cases

Wildlife removal (raccoons, bats, squirrels) has no index entry of its own; we'd code it 561710, since the definition covers "other insects and pests." Where a company does lawn care and pest control, the code follows whichever brings in more revenue.

How many pest control businesses there are

County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023, the Census Bureau's count of establishments with paid employees, for NAICS 561710:

Florida has the most pest control establishments (2,301), followed by California (1,984), Texas (1,498), New York (788) and Georgia (723).

CBP counts locations, so a national brand's branches each count once, and it leaves out owner-operators with no employees. It uses NAICS 2017; 561710 didn't change in 2022.

SBA size standards

From the SBA's Table of Size Standards, effective March 17, 2023 (13 CFR 121.201 on the eCFR shows no later change), measured in average annual receipts over five years, including affiliates:

If you bid for federal pest control work, list 561710 as your primary code in SAM.gov and add 561730 or 561720 if you sell lawn or disinfection work too, since the contracting officer sets one code per contract.

Where the code is used and what a wrong one costs

• Tax returns. The IRS activity codes match NAICS here: 561710 is "Exterminating and pest control services" on Schedule C.
• Insurance. Pest control carries pesticide and chemical exposures that a janitorial or landscaping code doesn't, so describe the work accurately.
• Licensing. Separately from any industry code, anyone who applies or supervises the use of restricted use pesticides must be certified, under programs run by the states, tribes and some federal agencies with EPA approval, and many states also require certification for commercial use of other pesticides. A license is a status, not a code, but it's what most states publish.

Finding pest control companies

On EDGAR there's no 7342; pest control companies file under SIC 7340, Services-To Dwellings & Other Buildings, alongside ABM Industries (facility services), Frontdoor (home warranties) and Airbnb. The main US-listed pure pest control company there is Rollins (Atlanta), the owner of Orkin. Its 10-K for 2025 reports revenue of $3.76 billion, more than two million residential and commercial customers, more than 800 company-owned and franchised locations in about 70 countries, and 21,946 employees at 31 December 2025, about 19,700 of them in the US. Rentokil Initial, a UK company, files under SIC 8741, Management Services.

Rollins' roughly 19,700 US employees are about 14% of the 139,150 people CBP counts in the industry (our calculation, comparing a 2025 company figure with a 2023 Census count), so most of the market is independent operators. State pesticide regulators (usually the department of agriculture) publish licensed pest control businesses and applicators, which is the best public list. Worked example: coding a pest and lawn business

Illustrative example. The company and figures are invented.

Gulfline Pest and Lawn (gulfline.example) in Tampa had $4.2 million in revenue last year: $2.9 million from termite and general pest contracts, $1.0 million from lawn fertilizing and weed control, and $0.3 million from disinfection jobs.

1. Primary code. Pest control is 69% of revenue ($2.9 million of $4.2 million), so the primary NAICS code is 561710 and the SIC code is 7342.
2. Secondary codes. Lawn work is 561730 and disinfection 561720; both go on a SAM.gov registration as extra codes.
3. Size. A five-year average of, say, $3.8 million is far under every standard above, but note the lowest one: if the lawn side ever became the primary code, the limit would drop from $17.5 million to $9.5 million.
4. SIC on a form. 7342 already covers the disinfection work, so one SIC code describes both.
