Short answer
The US has 6,100 hospitals, according to the American Hospital Association's Hospital Statistics, 2026 edition (2024 survey), including 5,121 community hospitals and 210 federal hospitals. Medicare's free Hospital General Information file lists 5,419 (July 2026) because it leaves out most rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals; adding CMS's separate files for those gives 6,137. The VA runs 170 medical centers, and the American College of Surgeons verifies 208 adult Level I trauma centers.
- AHA counts 6,100 hospitals (2024 survey): 5,121 community, 210 federal, 656 psychiatric and 113 other.
- Medicare's main list has 5,419; with 412 freestanding rehabilitation and 306 long-term care hospitals it reaches 6,137.
- 271 hospitals have 500 or more beds and hold 26% of all beds; 943 have fewer than 25.
- The VA runs 170 medical centers; Medicare's list includes 132 VA hospitals.
- The ACS directory lists 615 verified trauma centers, including 208 adult Level I centers in 44 states.

This page is for anyone who needs the number of hospitals in America, and for companies that sell to them: device and supply makers, health IT, staffing, facilities and services. It sets out each official count and why they differ, breaks the hospitals down by type, size and state, covers VA hospitals and trauma centers, and shows where to download the lists. For how a hospital buys, see selling to hospitals.
How many hospitals there are in the US
| Source | Count | Date | What it counts |
|---|---|---|---|
| American Hospital Association, Hospital Statistics 2026 edition | 6,100 | 2024 survey | Every AHA-registered hospital, including federal ones |
| CMS Hospital General Information (Care Compare) | 5,419 | July 2026 data, released August 2026 | Medicare-registered hospitals, except most rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals |
| CMS hospital lists combined | 6,137 | August to September 2026 | Our calculation: the 5,419, plus 412 freestanding rehabilitation hospitals and 306 long-term care hospitals from CMS's separate files |
| CMS Hospital Provider Cost Report | 6,026 | 2024 file | Hospitals that filed a Medicare cost report; no VA or military hospitals |
| Census County Business Patterns, NAICS 622 | 7,523 establishments | 2023 | Hospital locations with paid employees, so a hospital with several campuses can count more than once |
| ACS verified trauma centers | 615 | 30 October 2026 | Hospitals the American College of Surgeons has verified at a trauma level |
The AHA total breaks down into 5,121 community hospitals, 210 federal hospitals, 656 nonfederal psychiatric hospitals and 113 other hospitals, such as long-term care hospitals and prison infirmaries. Of the community hospitals, 2,984 are nonprofit, 1,224 investor-owned and 913 run by state or local government; 1,797 are rural, and 3,567 belong to a health system. Together all US hospitals staff 907,216 beds.
Why the counts differ
- Medicare publishes rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals separately. The main Hospital General Information file has only 5 long-term care hospitals and no freestanding rehabilitation hospitals. Add the 412 freestanding rehabilitation hospitals and the 306 long-term care hospitals that appear only in their own files, and Medicare's count (6,137) lands close to the AHA's (6,100). The rehabilitation file also lists 803 rehabilitation units inside general hospitals; those aren't separate hospitals.
- Federal hospitals drop out of some files. None of the 132 VA or 32 Department of Defense hospitals in Medicare's list appears in the cost report file, so a count built from cost reports leaves out federal hospitals.
- Census counts locations. County Business Patterns counts each establishment, so a hospital with several campuses can count more than once.
- Commercial databases count more facility types. Definitive Healthcare reported more than 7,500 active US hospitals in October 2026, from its own database.
Hospitals by type
| Hospital type | Hospitals | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Acute care | 3,107 | CMS Hospital General Information |
| Critical access (no more than 25 inpatient beds, mostly rural) | 1,382 | CMS Hospital General Information |
| Psychiatric | 624 | CMS Hospital General Information |
| Inpatient rehabilitation (freestanding) | 412 | CMS Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility file |
| Long-term care | 311 | CMS Long-Term Care Hospital file |
| Veterans Administration | 132 | CMS Hospital General Information |
| Children's | 94 | CMS Hospital General Information |
| Rural emergency hospitals | 43 | CMS Hospital General Information |
| Department of Defense | 32 | CMS Hospital General Information |
Five of the 311 long-term care hospitals also appear in the main file, which is why the combined total is 6,137. By ownership, the main file has 2,939 nonprofit hospitals, 1,143 for-profit (including 80 physician-owned), 1,114 run by state or local government (including hospital districts), 206 federal and 17 tribal. 4,495 offer emergency services. Long-term care hospitals are mostly for-profit (217 of 311).
Hospitals by size
These counts come from CMS's 2024 cost report file, for the 5,907 hospitals that reported beds:
| Beds | Hospitals | Beds in the band |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 25 | 943 | 15,400 |
| 25 to 99 | 2,642 | 123,358 |
| 100 to 299 | 1,594 | 278,226 |
| 300 to 499 | 457 | 172,057 |
| 500 or more | 271 | 206,252 |
| Total | 5,907 | 795,293 |
Bed counts are concentrated: the 271 largest hospitals hold 26% of the beds, while the 3,585 hospitals under 100 beds hold 17%. The cost report counts beds as Medicare defines them, which is lower than the AHA's staffed-bed total.
Hospitals by state
| State | Hospitals | Acute care | Critical access | Psychiatric | VA |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | 467 | 285 | 93 | 60 | 5 |
| California | 377 | 276 | 38 | 40 | 8 |
| Florida | 221 | 167 | 12 | 30 | 7 |
| Illinois | 193 | 114 | 55 | 16 | 5 |
| Ohio | 193 | 118 | 33 | 29 | 4 |
| New York | 192 | 128 | 21 | 29 | 9 |
| Pennsylvania | 186 | 131 | 17 | 26 | 7 |
| Louisiana | 161 | 82 | 27 | 44 | 3 |
| Georgia | 149 | 96 | 31 | 13 | 3 |
| Michigan | 149 | 90 | 35 | 18 | 4 |
CMS Hospital General Information, July 2026. The file covers 5,354 hospitals in the 50 states and DC and 65 in the territories, 59 of them in Puerto Rico.
Texas also has the most long-term care hospitals (38). Rural states have the most critical access hospitals after Texas: Kansas (83), Iowa (82) and Minnesota (76).
How many VA hospitals there are
The Veterans Health Administration runs 170 VA medical centers and 1,193 outpatient sites, 1,380 health care facilities in all, for over 9.1 million enrolled veterans. Medicare's list includes 132 VA hospitals with an address and phone number for each. VA hospitals buy through federal procurement rather than a health system's supply chain, so the process is closer to selling to the government than to selling to a community hospital.
How many Level 1 trauma centers there are
On 30 October 2026, the American College of Surgeons' directory listed 615 verified US trauma centers:
| Verified level | Hospitals |
|---|---|
| Level I (adult) | 208 |
| Level II (adult) | 213 |
| Level III (adult) | 152 |
| Level I pediatric | 75 |
| Level II pediatric | 61 |
A hospital can hold an adult and a pediatric level, so the levels add up to more than 615. Adult Level I centers are in 44 states, led by New York (22), California (20), Texas (19) and Ohio (12).
ACS verification isn't the whole picture. States designate trauma centers under their own rules, and some use their own accreditation: Pennsylvania, where the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation accredits trauma centers, has none in the ACS directory. For a complete list in one state, use the state EMS or trauma office's list as well.
How to download a list of hospitals
| List | Format | Key fields |
|---|---|---|
| CMS Hospital General Information | Free CSV, updated quarterly | CMS Certification Number (CCN), name, address, county, phone, hospital type, ownership, emergency services, star rating |
| CMS Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility and Long-Term Care Hospital files | Free CSVs | CCN, name, address, phone, ownership, certification date |
| CMS Hospital Provider Cost Report | Free CSV by year | Beds, payroll employees, fiscal year dates, discharges, financial statements |
| ACS Find a Hospital | Web search | Trauma level and other ACS quality programs, address, website |
Join the CMS files on the CCN to get type, phone, beds and fiscal year end on one row. The files list hospitals, not people.
Who buys inside a hospital
As general guidance, these are the usual owners by what you sell:
| What you sell | Who usually owns the decision |
|---|---|
| Clinical supplies and devices | A clinical sponsor, the value analysis committee and supply chain |
| Capital equipment | The department head requests it; a capital committee and the CFO approve |
| Software and IT | The CIO, often with a clinical informatics lead and the security team |
| Facilities, energy and construction | The facilities or plant operations director |
| Nurse staffing | The chief nursing officer and HR |
| Trauma services and registry tools | The trauma medical director and trauma program manager |
At the 3,567 community hospitals in a health system, many of these decisions sit at system headquarters.
Worked example: trauma registry software in the Southeast
Illustrative example. The company and its rates are invented; the counts come from the ACS directory on 30 October 2026.
The seller: Harbor Registry (harbor-registry.example) makes trauma registry software for the data that verified centers report. The territory: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama.
- Count the market. The ACS directory lists 34 adult Level I centers in the six states (Florida 10, North Carolina 7, Georgia 6, South Carolina 5, Tennessee 4, Alabama 2) and 21 adult Level II centers, 55 in all.
- Add what ACS misses. Check each state's trauma office list for designated centers that aren't ACS-verified.
- Enrich from CMS. Match each hospital to the CMS file by name and ZIP code for its CCN and phone, then to the cost report for beds and fiscal year end.
- Do the arithmetic. If an illustrative one in five centers reviews its registry software each year, that's 11 evaluations a year. Winning a third of them gives 3 or 4 new customers a year.
- Find the buyer. Write to the trauma program manager, who runs the registry team day to day. Finding that person and what's changed at each center (a new level, a new trauma director) is the slow part; Bebop finds the contacts and researches each hospital in the list.
Next step: profile each target hospital with the account research template before you write.

6,100, according to the American Hospital Association's Hospital Statistics, 2026 edition, based on its 2024 survey. That includes 5,121 community hospitals, 210 federal hospitals, 656 nonfederal psychiatric hospitals and 113 other hospitals. Medicare's free hospital list has 5,419, because it publishes rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals in separate files; adding those gives 6,137.
How many hospitals are in America by state?
Texas has the most, with 467 hospitals on Medicare's Hospital General Information list (July 2026), followed by California (377), Florida (221), Illinois and Ohio (193 each) and New York (192). Texas also leads in critical access hospitals (93) and long-term care hospitals (38). The list covers 5,354 hospitals in the 50 states and DC and 65 in the territories.
How many VA hospitals are in the US?
The Veterans Health Administration runs 170 VA medical centers, part of 1,380 VA health care facilities that also include 1,193 outpatient sites. It serves over 9.1 million enrolled veterans. Medicare's hospital list includes 132 VA hospitals, with an address and phone number for each. VA hospitals buy through federal procurement, not through a health system's supply chain.
How many Level 1 trauma centers are in the US?
The American College of Surgeons directory listed 208 verified adult Level I trauma centers on 30 October 2026, plus 75 verified Level I pediatric trauma centers, in 44 states. New York (22), California (20) and Texas (19) have the most. States also designate trauma centers themselves, and some, such as Pennsylvania, use their own accreditation, so state-designated counts are higher.
Where can I download a list of all US hospitals?
From CMS's Provider Data Catalog. The Hospital General Information file is a free CSV with each hospital's CMS Certification Number, name, address, county, phone, type, ownership and star rating. Download the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility and Long-Term Care Hospital files too, since the main file leaves those out. For beds and fiscal year end, join the CMS Hospital Provider Cost Report on the certification number.
How many hospital beds are in the US?
907,216 staffed beds in all US hospitals, according to the AHA's 2026 edition of Hospital Statistics (2024 survey), with 775,297 of them in community hospitals. CMS's 2024 cost reports, which count beds as Medicare defines them, total 795,293 beds across 5,907 hospitals. The 271 hospitals with 500 or more beds hold about a quarter of them.
