Accounting firms in Atlanta: 3,125 offices across the metro, where the big ones are, and how to check a Georgia CPA

Metro Atlanta's accounting offices are spread across 29 counties, but the big ones aren't: every office with 500 or more employees is in Fulton County. The suburbs are where the small CPA and tax practices are, and where most of the region's preparers have no credential to check.

This report is for Atlanta-area businesses and families choosing an accountant, accountants and students looking at local employers, and companies that sell to accounting firms. It shows where the firms are, what kind each is, how to check a Georgia CPA or preparer and how to prospect the market.

Where Atlanta's accounting firms are

County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023 counts NAICS 5412 (accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services) in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metro Area (CBSA 12060). The eight counties with the most offices:

CBP counts establishments with paid employees, not companies, so a firm with Midtown and Alpharetta offices counts twice. Accountants working alone without staff aren't included.

Fulton County has the large offices

Within the 1 to 19 band, 2,389 offices have fewer than five employees. Fulton's own published classes hold all 8 offices with 500 or more employees, 6 of the 9 with 250 to 499 and 19 of the 27 with 100 to 249. Census doesn't name them; the Big 4 accounting firms page profiles the largest networks. SEC EDGAR has no listed accounting companies to add for Atlanta, since its industry list has no accounting code.

Four kinds of firm, and payroll is bigger than you'd think

Payroll services (541214)1164,97442.9

CPA offices can audit, review and sign financial statements and also do tax and advisory work; bookkeeping services keep the books; tax preparation offices do returns only. The payroll offices are few but large, with pay per employee of $97,149 (our calculation from CBP payroll). If you run payroll for a growing company, that's a sizeable local supplier base to compare.

Checking a Georgia CPA or firm

The Georgia State Board of Accountancy licenses individual CPAs and CPA firms. Firm licenses renew on a cycle the board announces; for 2026, late firm renewals were due by 30 September. Use the board's licensure search and verify for status and discipline, or NASBA's CPAverify, which the board links to and which is populated with official board data.

For tax work, check federal credentials too. The IRS's August 2026 preparer listing, released under the Freedom of Information Act, shows who prepares returns here:

Preparers with a metro business addressNumber
All listed preparers21,779
CPAs4,520
Enrolled agents1,470
Attorneys364
No IRS credential and no Annual Filing Season Program record14,610

Credentials overlap, so the rows don't add up. The city of Atlanta has 5,628 listed preparers, 1,791 of them CPAs. Only CPAs, enrolled agents and attorneys can represent you before the IRS in every matter, including audits and appeals. The IRS also advises you to avoid preparers who base fees on your refund and never to sign a blank return. For a public company audit, the firm must be PCAOB-registered; 194 US firms issued public company audit reports in 2025.

Jobs and pay

Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates for May 2025, Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metro: 30,150 accountants and auditors at a median of $85,820, 22,480 bookkeeping clerks at $51,170 and 15,660 financial managers at $171,240. Tax preparer employment isn't published for the metro; their median wage was $50,070.

Selling to Atlanta accounting firms

The market splits cleanly. Fulton's large offices buy through firm-wide IT, procurement and security review. The suburban counties are owner-run: Gwinnett, Cobb and DeKalb alone have 1,457 offices averaging about five people.

Illustrative example. The company and rates are invented; the counts come from CBP.

Peachline Cyber (peachline.example) sells managed security to small CPA and tax practices. It targets Gwinnett, Cobb and DeKalb offices, takes CPA firms from the Georgia board's search and tax offices from the IRS listing's business names, and calls owners in May and June, after the filing deadline. If it reaches an illustrative 40% of 1,457 offices, that's 583 conversations a season; at a 3% close rate, 17 new clients.

Call opener for a suburban CPA practice
Hi [first name], this is [your name] with [company]. I'll be quick, since I know you've just come out of tax season.

I work with practices in [county] that hold client tax records on [system]. Most of them want to know one thing: if a laptop goes missing, can they show their clients' data was protected?

Is that something you've had time to look at this year, or is it still on the list?

Researching each practice before the call is the slow part; Bebop finds matching firms and contacts and writes a playbook for each. The list of accounting firms explains how firms buy, and how many accountants there are covers the national counts.
