Insurance companies in Louisiana: 2,801 offices, an agency-and-adjuster market and how to check a company

Louisiana's property insurance questions get the headlines, but the state's own insurance industry is mostly agencies and claims firms: 56% of insurance jobs are outside the insurers. The carriers that write most Louisianans' home and auto policies are run from other states, which is why checking the legal company on your policy matters.

This page is for Louisianans trying to find or check an insurance company or agent, people dealing with a claim, job seekers, businesses buying cover and vendors who sell to agencies, adjusters and insurers. It uses Census counts for the state, the one listed insurer based here and the regulator's contact points. It doesn't recommend insurers. For the state's neighbor to the north, see the Arkansas insurance companies report.

Louisiana's insurance count

The Census Bureau doesn't publish the 1,000-or-more cell for Louisiana; the 2 shown is derived as the total less the published classes. Louisiana ranks 22nd for establishments but 31st for insurance jobs, because its offices are small: 2,614 have fewer than 20 employees. CBP counts locations with paid employees, not companies, so a firm with offices in Baton Rouge and Lafayette counts twice, and agents working alone aren't counted.

Few insurer jobs, many agencies and adjusters

Carriers (NAICS 5241) underwrite policies and pay claims; agencies, brokerages, adjusters and administrators (NAICS 5242) sell policies and handle claims and paperwork for others.

Segment (NAICS)EstablishmentsEmployeesAverage pay
Carriers (5241)40712,352$90,647

Third-party administrators (524292)943,362$80,974
Claims adjusters (524291)124732$71,407

Average pay divides each segment's CBP payroll by its employees (our arithmetic). Title insurers (21 establishments) are left out because the Census Bureau flagged their employee count high-noise: the noise it adds for confidentiality moved the figure by 5% or more.

Three things stand out. Only 43.7% of the state's insurance jobs are at carriers, compared with 55.8% across the US. Health insurers, not property insurers, are the largest carrier segment. And the 124 claims adjusting establishments put Louisiana 10th among states, though most are tiny: 93 have fewer than five employees. A Louisianan's home or auto policy is usually written by a carrier whose head office and claims staff are elsewhere, and sold by one of the 2,136 local agency offices.

From AMERISAFE's 10-K for 2025. It insures employers in construction, trucking, logging and lumber, agriculture, manufacturing and maritime work, is licensed in 47 states, and took no more than 16.3% of its gross premiums from any one state; Louisiana was 5.8% in 2025, down from 7.5% in 2023. The 10-K also notes that its Louisiana bond holdings reflect an investment credit Louisiana allows against premium taxes for insurers holding Louisiana assets. It's a commercial insurer, not one a household buys from. For the country's largest insurers, see the largest insurance companies in the US.

Checking a company or agent in Louisiana

  1. Read the declarations page. It names the legal insurer, which is often a subsidiary of a better-known group.
  2. Confirm the license with the Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) in Baton Rouge: main line 225-342-5900, toll-free 800-259-5300, per the NAIC's directory of state departments.
  3. Look at the record. The NAIC's Consumer Insurance Search lets you "look up company complaints, licenses, and financial health" for each insurer.
  4. Complain in the right order. The NAIC advises raising a problem with the insurer first, then filing with the state department, which forwards the complaint and requires the insurer to respond. Stick to facts and dates, cite your policy wording and say what outcome you want.

Insurance jobs in Louisiana

Pay averages $85,389 across the industry, $99,171 at life insurers and $71,407 at adjusting firms. The biggest workplaces are few: 38 establishments have 100 or more employees, two (derived) have 1,000 or more, and five third-party administrator offices have 250 to 499. Agency work is spread across 2,136 offices, 1,385 of them with fewer than five people. The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, the statewide business group, is a starting point for employer contacts beyond insurance.

Louisiana is an agency and services market for vendors. Owner-run agencies buy on short cycles; adjusting firms buy for surge capacity and field productivity. Our guide to finding decision makers helps at the larger firms.

Illustrative example. Bayou Desk Staffing and its price are invented; the counts are from CBP 2023.

Bayou Desk Staffing (bayoudesk.example) supplies remote customer-service staff to agencies at $3,000 a month per seat. It aims at the 751 agency offices with at least five staff. If 15% add one seat in a year, that's 113 seats, or about $4.07 million in annual billings. It starts with agencies in the Baton Rouge, Lafayette and New Orleans areas. Bebop builds that agency list and finds each owner.

Questions people ask

How many insurance companies are in Louisiana?

The Census Bureau counted 2,801 insurance establishments with paid employees in Louisiana in 2023, employing 28,235 people. 407 were carriers that underwrite policies and 2,394 were agencies, brokerages, claims adjusters and administrators. These are locations, not companies, and they leave out agents working alone. Many more insurers are licensed to sell in Louisiana without an office there.

What insurance companies are headquartered in Louisiana?

The only SEC-listed insurer with headquarters in Louisiana is AMERISAFE of DeRidder, a workers' compensation insurer for employers in hazardous industries, with $317.3 million in 2025 revenue according to its 10-K. Privately held and mutual insurers based in Louisiana don't file with the SEC. The Louisiana Department of Insurance can confirm whether a company is licensed and where it's domiciled.

How do I check if an insurance company is licensed in Louisiana?

Contact the Louisiana Department of Insurance in Baton Rouge on 800-259-5300, or its main line 225-342-5900, with the legal company name from your policy. The NAIC's Consumer Insurance Search also shows a company's licenses by state, its complaint reports and its financial information. Search the exact subsidiary named on the policy, not the brand.

How do I file a complaint against my insurance company in Louisiana?

First contact the insurer and keep a log of calls, emails and letters with dates. If that fails, file with the Louisiana Department of Insurance (800-259-5300). The NAIC says departments investigate for free, forward your complaint to the insurer, require a response and can order a fix if the insurer acted improperly. Include your policy number, claim number and documents.
