Baton Rouge's law offices
County Business Patterns 2023, offices of lawyers (NAICS 541110), Baton Rouge, LA Metro Area (CBSA 12940):

| Average employees per office | 5.7 |
| Average annual pay | $83,675 |
| Share of Louisiana's 3,217 law offices | 16.9% |

|---|---|---|
| East Baton Rouge | 440 | 2,795 |
| Ascension | 30 | 114 |
| Livingston | 28 | 91 |

| Pointe Coupee | 8 | 17 |
| West Baton Rouge | 7 | 27 |
| West Feliciana | 6 | not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Assumption | 5 | 10 |
For Iberville and West Feliciana, the Census Bureau published employee counts with a high-noise flag (the noise it adds to protect confidentiality moved them by 5% or more), so we leave them out.
| Employees per office | Offices |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 388 |
| 5 to 9 | 85 |
| 10 to 19 | 41 |
| 20 to 49 | 24 |
| 50 to 99 | 4 |
| 100 or more | 2 (classes not published) |
Two offices have 100 or more employees and 28 have 20 to 99; the remaining 514 have fewer than 20. Average pay is 8% below Louisiana's law office figure and a third below the national one ($125,580).
What's counted. These are offices with paid employees, not firms, so a firm with offices on Third Street and in Gonzales counts twice. Employees include all staff, and owners aren't employees. Lawyers with no staff are excluded; the Census Bureau's Nonemployer Statistics count 967 legal services businesses in the metro with no employees, with $63.2 million in receipts, about $65,400 each, in a broader code (NAICS 5411) that also includes paralegal and title businesses. Counting both, nearly two in three legal businesses in the metro have no staff.
A civil law capital
Louisiana's legal system draws on the civil law tradition as well as the common law. LSU's law school in Baton Rouge describes its curriculum as covering both civil and common law and runs a Center for Civil Law Studies. For a client, that means a lawyer trained and practicing in Louisiana is the safer choice for property, family, inheritance and contract matters governed by Louisiana law; for a seller of legal research or drafting tools, it means content built for other states may not fit.
Checking a Louisiana lawyer
| What you want to know | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Is the lawyer licensed and in good standing? | Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board attorney status search |
| Has the lawyer been disciplined? | The LADB's discipline history request |
| Contact details and practice information | Louisiana State Bar Association membership directory |
The Supreme Court of Louisiana created the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board in 1990 as a statewide agency to run the lawyer discipline system, and its stated purpose is to protect the public. Louisiana Supreme Court Rule XIX requires each lawyer to file with the Louisiana State Bar Association.
If you don't have a name to check, start with the LSBA's "Find Legal Help" pages. The LSBA's own list of lawyer referral services names only the Lafayette Bar Association's directory, so in Baton Rouge you'll more often rely on recommendations and the membership directory.
The capital region's clients
The Greater Baton Rouge Economic Partnership (formerly the Baton Rouge Area Chamber) covers a nine-parish Capital Region. Its project list includes ExxonMobil's $500 million polyolefins plant expansion, Shintech's investments in Plaquemine and an IBM services center with more than 800 jobs, and it ranks the region's port eighth in North America by tonnage. For law firms, clients like these typically mean environmental, construction, maritime and employment work, and the state capital adds regulatory and public law work. If your matter falls in one of those areas, ask firms for comparable recent work.
Selling to Baton Rouge law firms
The market has 473 offices with fewer than ten employees, owner-run and price-conscious, and 71 with ten or more, where an office manager or firm administrator usually handles vendors. The two largest offices buy like large firms anywhere.
Illustrative example. The company, percentages and results are invented.
Capitol Docket (capitol-docket.example) tracks Louisiana legislation, regulations and agency hearings for law firms. It targets the 71 metro offices with ten or more employees (41 + 24 + 4 + 2) and keeps those with regulatory, environmental or government relations practices, an illustrative 35%, or 25 offices. It contacts the practice leader and the firm administrator at each: 50 people. At a 10% reply rate in a small market where a good reference travels, five conversations; two subscriptions before the next legislative session would be a strong start.
Working out which firms have those practices, and who leads them, is the research that takes time; Bebop finds firms matching a description like this and writes a playbook for each account. For the method by hand, see how to find decision makers.

Questions people ask
How many law firms are in Baton Rouge?
The Baton Rouge metro had 544 law offices with employees in 2023 (440 in East Baton Rouge Parish), and they had 3,118 people on payroll, according to the Census Bureau. That's offices, not firms, and it leaves out lawyers with no staff; the Census Bureau counted another 967 legal services businesses in the metro with no employees.
How do I check if a Louisiana lawyer is in good standing?
Use the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board's attorney status search at ladb.org. The board is the statewide agency the Supreme Court of Louisiana created in 1990 to run the lawyer discipline system, and you can also request a lawyer's discipline history there. The Louisiana State Bar Association's membership directory gives contact and practice details.
Is Louisiana law different from other states?
Yes, in important ways. Louisiana's legal system draws on the civil law tradition as well as the common law used in other states, and LSU's law school in Baton Rouge teaches both and runs a Center for Civil Law Studies. For matters governed by Louisiana law, such as property, family or inheritance, choose a lawyer who trained and practices in Louisiana.
How much do law firm employees earn in Baton Rouge?
Law offices in the Baton Rouge metro paid an average of $83,675 per employee in 2023, according to Census County Business Patterns, below the Louisiana law office average of $90,693 and the national average of $125,580. It's an all-staff average, so a lawyer's pay could be well above it, and owners' income isn't counted. Most offices in the metro are small.
