Law firms in Greenville, SC: 439 offices in the Upstate and how to find and check a lawyer

Greenville's legal market is small and local: four in five of the metro's law offices are in Greenville County, and only one has 100 or more employees. What makes it interesting is the client base, an Upstate economy built on manufacturers and international companies.

Here's the picture for people looking for a lawyer or law firm in Greenville, South Carolina and the surrounding Upstate, and for companies that sell to firms there. It covers the Census metro area of Greenville, Anderson, Pickens and Laurens counties.

Which Greenville?

Several US cities share the name. This page covers Greenville, South Carolina. The Census Bureau's other Greenville metro area, Greenville, North Carolina, is much smaller: County Business Patterns counted 78 law offices there in 2023, with 398 employees. If that's the one you mean, the rest of this page won't apply; North Carolina lawyers are checked through the NC State Bar (see law firms in Charlotte).

The Census Bureau published Laurens County's employee count with a high-noise flag, meaning the noise it adds for confidentiality changed the figure by 5% or more, so we don't show it.

Only one Upstate office tops 100 employees, 22 have 20 to 99, and 416 are below 20. Average pay of $94,348 is a little above South Carolina's law office average ($89,252) and well below the national one ($125,580).

These figures count offices with paid staff, not firms; a firm with offices in Greenville and Anderson counts twice, and statewide firms count once for each Upstate office. Employees include support staff. Lawyers who work alone aren't included: the Census Bureau's Nonemployer Statistics count 485 legal services businesses in the metro with no employees, with $30.6 million in receipts (a broader code, NAICS 5411, that includes paralegal and title businesses). Add them and there are roughly as many no-staff legal businesses in the Upstate as staffed law offices.

Finding and checking a Greenville lawyer

  1. Use the SC Bar's referral service if you don't have a name. The South Carolina Bar's Lawyer Referral Service takes calls at (803) 799-7100 on weekdays and online requests around the clock, filtered by type of law and location. The referred lawyer charges no more than $50 for a 30-minute consultation; after that, regular rates apply. Participating lawyers don't take pro bono cases.
  2. Confirm the license. The South Carolina Judicial Branch's attorney search finds attorneys licensed to practice in South Carolina by name or bar number. The SC Bar also has a member directory.
  3. Check discipline. The Judicial Branch's Office of Disciplinary Counsel handles complaints about lawyers.
  4. Expect a small practice. 382 of the metro's 439 offices have fewer than ten employees. For most personal matters that's the right fit; for a large corporate matter, ask a firm how much of the work will be done in Greenville and how much from another office.

The Upstate's business clients

The Upstate SC Alliance, the region's economic development organization, counts more than 2,938 engineering and manufacturing companies and 590 international companies across its ten counties, and names BMW, Michelin and GE Vernova among the region's employers. For a manufacturer or a foreign-owned company, the usual outside legal needs include employment, immigration, environmental, real estate and trade work. If you're choosing a firm for that kind of work, ask for examples with clients in your industry.

Selling to Greenville law firms

The market is small enough that you can know every relevant firm. The 22 offices with 20 to 99 employees and the single large office are where structured buying happens (a firm administrator, an IT lead, a committee); the rest are owner-run.

Illustrative example. The company, percentages and results are invented.

Palmetto Language (palmetto-language.example) provides certified translation and interpreting for legal work in Spanish, German and French. It targets the 57 metro offices with 10 or more employees (34 + 12 + 10 + 1) and keeps those advertising business, employment or immigration work, an illustrative 60%, or 34 firms. It contacts the managing partner and the office manager at each (68 people), and in a market this size it adds the local bar's events to its calendar. At a 10% reply rate, about seven conversations; two firms sending a first document would be a good start.

Identifying which firms act for international manufacturers, and who handles vendors at each, is the research that takes time; Bebop finds firms matching a plain-language description and writes a playbook for each account. The guide to selling to law firms covers the confidentiality expectations firms will bring to a translation vendor.
