On this page
This page is for anyone who needs Louisville's law firms as a market: residents and businesses looking for a lawyer, lawyers and staff considering employers, researchers, and companies that sell to law practices. It covers the Census figures for the metro and each county, the two states' licensing systems, what the pay figure does and doesn't mean, how to find a lawyer, and how to prospect firms.
Louisville's law offices
| Measure (2023) | Louisville/Jefferson County, KY-IN Metro Area |
|---|---|
| Law offices with paid employees | 618 |
| Employees | 3,919 |
| Annual payroll | $304,709,000 |
| Average employees per office | 6.3 |
| Average annual pay | $77,752 |
| Share of US law offices | 0.37% of 165,491 |
| Employees per office | Offices |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 444 |
| 5 to 9 | 89 |
| 10 to 19 | 50 |
| 20 to 49 | 24 |
| 50 to 99 | 7 |
| 100 to 249 | 3 |
| 250 or more | 1 (classes not published) |
The Census Bureau doesn't publish the classes above 249 employees for the metro; the published classes come to 617, so one office sits above them. Grouped, 583 offices have 1 to 19 employees, 31 have 20 to 99 and 4 have 100 or more.
The figures are County Business Patterns for CBSA 31140 under NAICS 541110, offices of lawyers. An office counts if it has at least one paid employee, and each location counts separately. Lawyers who practice without staff aren't in it, and neither are in-house or government lawyers.
Kentucky and Indiana
| County | State | Offices | Employees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jefferson | Kentucky | 463 | 3,389 |
| Floyd | Indiana | 39 | 198 |
| Clark | Indiana | 24 | 81 |
| Oldham | Kentucky | 23 | 85 |
| Shelby | Kentucky | 17 | 25 |
| Bullitt | Kentucky | 13 | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Nelson | Kentucky | 13 | 33 |
| Washington | Indiana | 8 | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
Two employee counts carry the Census Bureau's high-noise flag (the noise it adds for confidentiality changed them by 5% or more), so we don't show them. The other 18 offices are in the metro's smaller counties: Henry, Harrison, Meade and Spencer. Jefferson County has 75% of the offices and 86% of the jobs; outside it, 155 offices employ 530 people, about 3.4 each.
The river is a licensing line. The Kentucky Bar Association is an independent agency of the Supreme Court of Kentucky and serves about 19,581 active and inactive Kentucky-licensed attorneys. On the Indiana side, the Indiana Supreme Court keeps the Roll of Attorneys, with a public license status check linked from its courts site. A New Albany or Jeffersonville matter in Indiana courts needs a lawyer licensed in Indiana.
Why average pay looks low
At $77,752, average pay in Louisville law offices trails Pittsburgh ($121,344), Raleigh ($108,590) and Omaha ($104,696), as well as the US figure. Census data can't say why, but three things shape the number:
- Owners aren't in it. Payroll is wages for employees. Partners and shareholders who take profits rather than salary don't count, so in small, owner-run offices much of what lawyers earn is outside the figure.
- Small offices dominate. 72% of offices have fewer than five employees, and in an owner-run office most of the payroll is support staff, so the average leans toward staff wages.
- It's an average of everyone. Receptionists, legal assistants, paralegals and associates are averaged together.
For a buyer of legal services, the number says nothing about what a Louisville lawyer will charge. For a seller, it's a fair signal that budgets for staff-level tools and services are tighter here than in larger markets, so price and packaging should be modest.
Finding a Louisville lawyer
- Ask for a referral. The Louisville Bar Association lists Kentucky Lawyer Referral on its Need a Lawyer page, and the Kentucky Bar Association links to lawyer referral services from its Find a Lawyer page.
- Search the state directory. The Kentucky Bar Association's Directory of Kentucky Attorneys searches licensed lawyers. It returns records in an order the system picks at random, so run more than one search.
- Check the right state. For Floyd, Clark or other Indiana counties, check the Indiana Supreme Court's Roll of Attorneys.
- Know the complaint route. The Kentucky Bar Association's Office of Bar Counsel takes complaints about Kentucky lawyers.
- Agree the fee in writing before work starts.
Selling to Louisville law firms
Louisville has 31 offices with 20 to 99 employees and four larger ones, and 583 owner-run offices under 20 people. In the small ones, the lawyer who owns the practice decides; in the mid-sized ones, an office administrator brings options to the managing partner.
Illustrative example. The company, percentages and results are invented.
Ohio Falls Finance (ohiofalls.example) provides fractional CFO and bookkeeping services for professional firms. It targets the 74 Louisville-area law offices with 10 to 49 employees, big enough to need monthly financial reporting and too small for a full-time finance lead. With the managing partner and the office administrator at each, that's 148 contacts. A 7% reply rate gives about ten conversations; if one in four becomes an engagement, two or three new clients. It prices a starter package below its rates in bigger cities, because the pay data says budgets here are smaller.
A list of 74 firms is short enough to research properly: who manages the money, whether a partner just retired, whether the firm opened a second office. Bebop researches each account and writes a playbook for it. For owner-run firms, see how to sell to small businesses.
Subject: [firm]'s numbers at month end Hi [first name], Firms of [firm]'s size usually know their billings but not their margins by practice area, because nobody has time to close the books properly each month. We act as a part-time CFO for Louisville law firms: a monthly close, a one-page report on realization, collections and cash, and a quarterly look at what each practice area really earns. Worth a 20-minute call to see whether that's useful? If not, no follow-ups. [Your name]
