This report is for anyone looking for law firms in San Antonio: someone who needs a lawyer, a law student or lateral sizing up employers, an analyst, or a company that sells to firms in Bexar County and the surrounding Hill Country and I-35 counties. It uses the State Bar of Texas's own counts of lawyers, the Census Bureau's counts of law offices, and BLS wage data.
Who practices law in Bexar County
The State Bar of Texas Department of Research and Analysis profiles active Bexar County members as of 31 December 2025: 6,704 attorneys, up 11% from 6,029 in 2015. Of the 4,914 who reported a primary occupation:
| Primary occupation | Bexar County | Share | All Texas share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo practitioner | 1,212 | 25% | 20% |
| Firm of 2 to 5 attorneys | 840 | 17% | 15% |
| Firm of 6 to 10 | 278 | 6% | 5% |
| Firm of 11 to 24 | 379 | 8% | 5% |
| Firm of 25 to 60 | 157 | 3% | 4% |
| Firm of more than 60 | 337 | 7% | 13% |
| Government attorney | 528 | 11% | 10% |
| Corporate or in-house counsel | 417 | 8% | 12% |
| Other (judges, faculty, public interest, retired and other) | 766 | 16% | 15% |
The 25 to 60 row combines the profile's 25 to 40 (105) and 41 to 60 (52) rows. Private practice is 65% of reporting lawyers in Bexar County, against 62% statewide, and it's tilted toward solos and small firms. The big-firm share is half the state's.
The profile shows three other things that matter to anyone hiring or selling here:
- Local training. 2,908 Bexar County attorneys (43%) went to St. Mary's University School of Law, against 7% of Texas lawyers.
- A bilingual bar. 30% of those reporting ethnicity identify as Hispanic or Latino, against 11% statewide.
- An older bar. The median age is 52 (49 statewide), and 24% are over 65 (21% statewide), so practice succession is a live issue for many small firms.
Lawyers and law offices by county
| County | Law offices (CBP 2023) | Office employees | Active attorneys (State Bar, 2025) | Residents per attorney |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bexar County, Texas | 1,056 | 6,891 | 6,704 | 322 |
| Comal County, Texas | 53 | 199 | 551 | 380 |
| Kendall County, Texas | 30 | 108 | 259 | 206 |
| Guadalupe County, Texas | 19 | not reported (high-noise figure) | 202 | 996 |
| Medina County, Texas | 10 | 19 | 53 | 1,073 |
| Wilson County, Texas | 9 | 48 | 47 | 1,194 |
| Atascosa County, Texas | 8 | not reported (high-noise figure) | 53 | 1,011 |
| Bandera County, Texas | 3 | 2 | 43 | 532 |
| San Antonio-New Braunfels metro | 1,188 | 7,317 | 7,912 | 356 |
The two sources count different things: the State Bar counts licensed lawyers by address, including government and in-house lawyers; the Census Bureau counts law offices with paid staff. Guadalupe and Atascosa employee counts are omitted: the Census Bureau did publish them, with a flag warning that its confidentiality noise shifted each by at least 5%. The State Bar's statewide figure is one attorney per 313 residents. By the ABA's definition of a legal desert (more than 1,000 residents per attorney), Medina, Wilson and Atascosa counties qualify.
The metro's law offices in Census data
County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023, offices of lawyers (NAICS 541110), San Antonio-New Braunfels, TX Metro Area (CBSA 41700):
| Measure (2023) | San Antonio metro |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 1,188 |
| Employees (mid-March) | 7,317 |
| Annual payroll | $682,137,000 |
| Average employees per office | 6.2 |
| Average annual pay | $93,226 |
| Share of US law offices | 0.72% of 165,491 |
| Employees per office | Offices |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 851 |
| 5 to 9 | 178 |
| 10 to 19 | 87 |
| 20 to 49 | 57 |
| 50 to 99 | 9 |
| 100 to 249 | 4 |
| 250 or more | 2 (derived from the total; classes not published) |
The Bureau doesn't publish the classes above 249 employees, but six offices have 100 or more, so two are larger. Texas law offices pay an average of $126,451, so San Antonio's $93,226 is 26% lower (our calculation from the same data). CBP excludes solo lawyers with no employees, and it counts locations, so a Houston firm's San Antonio office appears here as its own establishment.
The BLS (OEWS, May 2025) counts 4,020 employed lawyers in the metro, with a mean wage of $169,120 against $180,370 for Texas, and 2,900 paralegals and legal assistants. Lawyers' location quotient is 0.73, so they're a smaller share of local jobs than nationally. OEWS excludes self-employed lawyers, which matters in a market with this many solos.
How to find a San Antonio lawyer
- Search by county and language. The State Bar of Texas Find a Lawyer directory covers lawyers licensed in Texas and filters by county, the type of help you need, languages spoken, board certification and fee options such as flat fees or payment plans.
- Or get a referral. The San Antonio Bar Association's lawyer referral service connects callers with member lawyers. The association was founded in 1898.
- Look for board certification where your matter is specialized. The directory's "Board Certified in" filter shows lawyers certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, though not every practice area has a certification.
- Ask about fees up front. The directory shows which lawyers offer flat fees, payment plans or sliding-scale fees; whatever you agree, get it in a written engagement letter.
Selling to San Antonio law firms
A market this tilted toward solos buys like small business: the lawyer is also the office manager, wants a short trial, and pays by card. Pitch time saved and cash flow, offer month-to-month terms, and expect decisions in days. Some of the larger offices are branches of firms based in other cities, where purchasing may be run from headquarters, so confirm where the decision sits before you invest in an account. Spanish-language capability, for your product or your support team, is a real differentiator here.
Illustrative example. Company name, rates and outcomes are fictional.
Puente Answering (puente.example) runs a bilingual answering and intake service. Census puts 906 Bexar County law offices at fewer than ten employees (746 with one to four, 160 with five to nine). If an estimated 35% handle consumer matters with Spanish-speaking clients (immigration, family, injury, criminal defense), that's about 317 offices. Calling each once, reaching an estimated 25% of decision makers gives about 79 conversations; if one in ten agrees to a two-week trial, that's eight trials a cycle. Firm websites and the State Bar directory's language filter tell you which offices to call first. For the general approach, see how to sell to small businesses.
"Hi [name], this is [your name] with [company]. I'll be quick: I work with San Antonio firms that take a lot of first calls in Spanish. When you're in court or with a client, who answers those calls today? [Listen.] We answer in English and Spanish under your firm's name, run your intake questions and text you the details in minutes. Most firms your size try it for two weeks before deciding. Could I send you the setup form?"
At volume, working out which of 900 small offices fit is the slow part; Bebop finds matching firms and researches each one.

How do I find a Spanish-speaking lawyer in San Antonio?
Use the State Bar of Texas's Find a Lawyer directory at texasbar.com. Choose Bexar County as the location, pick the type of help you need, and filter by languages spoken. You can also filter by board certification and fee options such as payment plans. The San Antonio Bar Association's lawyer referral service is another route. In Bexar County, 30% of active lawyers reporting ethnicity identify as Hispanic or Latino.
What is the biggest law firm in San Antonio?
Census data doesn't name firms, but it shows there are few large offices: six law offices in the San Antonio metro had 100 or more employees in 2023, and two had more than 249. The State Bar of Texas counts 337 Bexar County lawyers working at firms of more than 60 attorneys, 7% of those reporting. Some large offices here are branches of firms based in other cities, so firm-wide headcounts can mislead.
