Louisiana in Census data
US Census Bureau County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023, State of Louisiana, NAICS 211 (Oil and Gas Extraction), 213111 (Drilling Oil and Gas Wells), 213112 (Support Activities for Oil and Gas Operations) and 324110 (Petroleum Refineries):
| Measure (2023) | Louisiana |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 1,158 |
| Employees, payroll and average pay | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Share of US establishments | 6.93% of 16,710 |
| Rank among states | 3rd |
The Census Bureau published the statewide employee and payroll totals but flagged them as high-noise: the noise it adds for confidentiality changed them by 5% or more, so we don't report them. The flag comes from the refinery row. The other segments are published normally:
| Segment (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees | Average annual pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Support activities (213112) | 706 | 25,466 | $93,697 |
| Crude petroleum extraction (211120) | 201 | 3,618 | $146,605 |
| Drilling (213111) | 139 | 3,352 | $94,490 |
| Natural gas extraction (211130) | 94 | 1,648 | $133,482 |
| Petroleum refineries (324110) | 18 | Not reported | Not reported |
For the four codes combined, the Census Bureau publishes only one size class: 40 establishments with 100 to 249 employees. The others are withheld. In the support segment alone, 321 of the 706 establishments have fewer than five employees and 42 have 100 or more.
Where the companies are
| Parish | Establishments | Employees | Support firms (213112) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lafayette Parish | 234 | 7,526 | 172 |
| Caddo Parish | 145 | 2,299 | 56 |
| Terrebonne Parish | 75 | Not reported | 53 |
| Bossier Parish | 50 | 1,020 | 37 |
| Lafourche Parish | 43 | Not reported | 35 |
| Iberia Parish | 34 | Not reported | 28 |
| St. Martin Parish | 34 | Not reported | 24 |
| LaSalle Parish | 28 | Not reported | 9 |
"Not reported" marks an employee total the Census Bureau flagged as high-noise. Another 30 establishments are recorded statewide, with no parish. Two clusters stand out. Lafayette, Terrebonne, Lafourche, Iberia and St. Martin parishes in the south hold 420 establishments, 312 of them support contractors, many serving the Gulf. Caddo and Bossier in the northwest hold 195, and Caddo leans toward producers (76 extraction establishments), the Shreveport end of the state's gas business.
These are establishments with paid employees, not companies; the self-employed aren't counted, and head offices are often filed under management of companies (NAICS 55). Pipelines (NAICS 486, 299 establishments in Louisiana) and gas processing are outside these codes.
Production and refining
| Measure | Louisiana | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Crude oil, 2025 | 74,000 barrels a day, 12th among states (99,000 in 2020) | EIA |
| Marketed natural gas, 2025 | 3,813,990 million cubic feet, 4th among states | EIA |
| Refinery operating capacity, 1 January 2026 | 3,005,373 barrels a day, 2nd after Texas | EIA |
EIA reports the federal offshore Gulf of America separately from any state, at 1,942,000 barrels a day of crude in 2025. A large support count beside small state crude output suggests that much of the service work is for wells outside the state's own production, offshore and in neighboring states. Gas output was 4,352,670 million cubic feet in 2023, fell to 3,614,212 in 2024 and rose to 3,813,990 in 2025.
Public companies based in Louisiana
| Company | Headquarters | What the filings show |
|---|---|---|
| Hornbeck Offshore Services | Covington | Formed when Helix Energy Solutions completed its merger with Hornbeck Offshore on 1 September 2026 and took the Hornbeck name; trades on the NYSE as HOS. Helix reported $1.29 billion of net revenues for 2025, from Houston, before the merger |
| CKX Lands | Lake Charles | Total revenue of $838,543 in 2025, "a significant portion" from oil and gas activity on its lands |
Companies headquartered in other states don't appear in this table, even when they run large Louisiana operations: Expand Energy's 2025 10-K, for example, lists operations in Louisiana and Texas in the Haynesville and Bossier shales. Check each company's 10-K for its Louisiana assets.
Finding and checking companies

| SONRIS | The state's oil and gas database: wells, operators, permits and production |
| Louisiana energy facts (archive) | Monthly state production tables by area since 1991 |
| Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association | The state's century-old industry association, based in Baton Rouge |
| Louisiana Oil and Gas Association | Represents Louisiana operators and service companies, with a member directory |
| SEC EDGAR | Filings for Hornbeck Offshore and other public companies |
On 1 October 2025 the Department of Energy and Natural Resources became the Department of Conservation and Energy (C&E); older links point to the archived department site. To vet an operator, find its wells and production in SONRIS, check for compliance orders, and for a public company read the 10-K.
Selling to Louisiana oil and gas companies
| Account type | Where | Who usually decides |
|---|---|---|
| Offshore and onshore service contractors | Lafayette, Terrebonne, Lafourche, Iberia, St. Martin | Owner, operations manager, HSE manager, fleet or marine superintendent |
| Gas producers | Caddo, Bossier and the northwest | Operations and completions managers; supply chain at head office |
| Refineries | 3.0 million barrels a day of capacity | Maintenance, reliability and turnaround planners |
Illustrative example. The seller and its prices are invented; the counts are Census 2023 data.
Atchafalaya Lifting (atchafalaya.example) inspects and certifies cranes and rigging. Its target is the 312 support establishments in the five southern service parishes. Assume a third run their own lifting equipment and decide locally: about 104 accounts, with one operations or HSE manager each. At a 7% reply rate that's about 7 conversations; if three sign annual inspection contracts at $14,000, that's $42,000 a year, and the shops talk to each other. Bebop can find the service firms that match and research each one; see how to find decision makers for reaching the right person.

Questions people ask
How many oil and gas companies are in Louisiana?
Census County Business Patterns counted 1,158 oil and gas extraction, drilling, support and refining establishments in Louisiana in 2023, third among states. Support contractors were the largest group, 706 establishments with 25,466 employees. That counts locations with paid employees, not companies. The statewide employee total isn't reported because the Census Bureau flagged it as a high-noise figure.
Where are oil and gas companies located in Louisiana?
Lafayette Parish has the most, 234 establishments with 7,526 employees in 2023 Census data, followed by Caddo Parish (145), Terrebonne (75), Bossier (50) and Lafourche (43). The southern parishes are dominated by service contractors, many supporting offshore work; Caddo and Bossier in the northwest are home to more producers.
Does Louisiana produce a lot of oil?
Not outside federal waters. The US Energy Information Administration puts Louisiana's crude oil output at 74,000 barrels a day in 2025, 12th among states and down from 99,000 in 2020. Louisiana is much bigger in natural gas, fourth among states with 3,813,990 million cubic feet in 2025, and in refining, second only to Texas. EIA counts federal offshore Gulf output separately.
Who regulates oil and gas in Louisiana?
The Department of Conservation and Energy (C&E), which replaced the Department of Energy and Natural Resources on 1 October 2025, oversees the state's oil and gas conservation work. Its SONRIS database holds well, operator, permit and production records. Offshore wells in federal waters are regulated by federal agencies, not the state.
What public oil and gas companies are headquartered in Louisiana?
Hornbeck Offshore Services, based in Covington, is the largest: it was formed when Helix Energy Solutions completed its merger with Hornbeck Offshore on 1 September 2026, and trades on the NYSE as HOS. CKX Lands of Lake Charles, a small landowner with oil and gas revenue, also files with the SEC. Operators headquartered in other states aren't counted here, even when they run large Louisiana operations.
