The largest producers with Midland addresses
The Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) publishes each operator's production for the year and a directory of every organization that files the P-5 organization report. We joined the 2025 production ranks to the directory (P-5 records as of 27 October 2026) and kept operators whose address is in Midland:
| Rank | Operator (as listed) | Oil and condensate, 2025 (barrels) | Leases |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Diamondback E&P LLC | 212,111,608 | 4,776 |
| 2 | EOG Resources, Inc. | 85,535,837 | 4,281 |
| 3 | COG Operating LLC | 57,240,312 | 1,565 |
| 4 | Chevron U. S. A. Inc. | 44,801,512 | 1,509 |
| 5 | Permian Resources Operating, LLC | 39,287,066 | 1,448 |
| 6 | SM Energy Company | 38,432,349 | 1,222 |
| 7 | Civitas Permian Operating, LLC | 30,607,889 | 768 |

The directory address is where the operator files, not necessarily its head office. EOG and Chevron run their Permian business from Midland but are headquartered in Houston, and SM Energy, which completed its merger with Civitas Resources on 30 January 2026, is based in Denver.
| Midland operators by lease count | Operators |
|---|---|
| 1,000 or more leases | 6 |
| 100 to 999 | 25 |
| 10 to 99 | 105 |

Midland in Census data
US Census Bureau County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023, Midland, TX Metro Area (CBSA 33260: Midland and Martin counties), NAICS 211, 213111, 213112 and 324110:

| Annual payroll | $3,797,520,000 |
| Average employees per establishment | 33.6 |
| Average annual pay | $134,846 |

| Crude petroleum extraction (211120) | 202 | 4,297 | $231,402 |
| Drilling (213111) | 62 | 3,043 | $102,731 |
| Natural gas extraction (211130) | 49 | 711 | $178,696 |
| Employees per establishment | Establishments |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 404 |
| 5 to 9 | 109 |
| 10 to 19 | 100 |
| 20 to 49 | 105 |
| 50 to 99 | 61 |
| 100 to 249 | 38 |
| 250 or more | 21 |
The Census Bureau doesn't publish the 250 to 499, 500 to 999 and 1,000-or-more classes here; the 21 is the total less the published classes. In broader bands, 613 establishments have 1 to 19 employees, 166 have 20 to 99 and 59 have 100 or more. Midland County holds 822 of the 838 establishments and 27,889 employees; Martin County has 15, with an employee total the Census Bureau flags as high-noise (noise added for confidentiality moved it by 5% or more), so we don't report it.
These are establishments with paid employees, not companies, and the self-employed aren't counted. Head offices are often filed under management of companies (NAICS 55), so the Diamondback and Permian Resources headquarters may not sit in these rows. Odessa, next door in Ector County, is a separate metro.
Drilling activity
The RRC counts drilling permits issued in its three Permian districts (7C, 08 and 8A). After 5,892 in 2022 and 5,267 in 2023, permits fell to 3,190 in 2024 and recovered to 4,324 in 2025; its 2026 count so far is 2,855. The RRC's Permian Basin page lists 61 Texas counties and more than 7,000 fields in the basin.

The Midland Development Corporation's list, which gives no employee counts, includes Diamondback Energy, EOG Resources, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil/XTO Energy, Occidental Petroleum, Permian Resources, Fasken Oil & Ranch and BTA Oil Producers among producers, and Baker Hughes, Halliburton, SLB, Patterson-UTI, ProPetro, Ranger Energy Services and Key Energy Services among service firms. Before signing with an operator, check that its P-5 status is active and look at its trend in the production ranks.
Selling to Midland oil and gas companies
| Account type | Who usually decides | What they buy |
|---|---|---|
| Large producers (1,000+ leases) | Category managers in supply chain; completions and production leaders set specs | Services and equipment through approved-vendor lists |
| Mid-size operators (100 to 999 leases) | VP operations, production superintendent | Field services, chemicals, data and monitoring |
| Service contractors (525 establishments) | Owner, district manager, HSE manager | Equipment, parts, safety, fleet, staffing |
Illustrative example. The seller and its prices are invented; the counts are Census 2023 data.
Mesquite Safety (mesquite.example) runs hydrogen sulfide and confined-space courses. Its buyers are the HSE managers at the metro's 166 establishments with 20 to 99 employees: big enough to train crews in batches, small enough to lack an in-house trainer. One contact at each is 166 people. At a 6% reply rate that's about 10 conversations; if a third book a class for 12 workers at $250 a seat, that's 3 classes and $9,000, and the repeat business comes when crews turn over. Bebop can find yards that fit and research each one; how to build a prospect list covers the method.
