Atlanta tech companies by the numbers
County Business Patterns (CBP), the Census Bureau's annual count of businesses with employees, puts 6,069 tech establishments in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA Metro Area (CBSA 12060) for 2023. Tech means four NAICS industry groups: software publishers (5112), computer systems design and related services (5415), data processing, hosting and related services (518) and other information services (5191).
| Measure | Atlanta metro, 2023 |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 6,069 |
| Employees | 142,463 |
| Annual payroll | $18,849,034,000 |
| Average employees per establishment | 23.5 |
| Average annual pay | $132,308 |
| Share of US tech establishments | 3.09% (of 196,184) |
Atlanta ranks seventh among US metro areas by tech establishments, just behind Chicago (6,852) and ahead of Miami and Philadelphia.
The largest tech employers in metro Atlanta
The Metro Atlanta Chamber surveys the region's largest employers every two years, ranking them by full-time equivalent headcount across the 29-county metro. Its 2025 list (updated March 2025) includes these technology companies:
| Chamber rank | Employer | Metro Atlanta FTEs | Industry as listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 39 | ADP | 2,599 | Computing, data processing and related services |
| 47 | Microsoft | 2,000 | Software |
| 54 | NCR Voyix | 1,700 | Computers, peripherals and software |
| 66 | Cisco Systems | 1,400 | Computer equipment manufacturing |
| 70 | Manhattan Associates | 1,300 | Software products and services |
| 86 | Salesforce | 1,181 | Software products and services |
| 89 | Change Healthcare | 1,105 | Data processing, hosting and related services |
| 96 | Fiserv | 1,025 | Custom computer programming services |
| 99 | Intuit | 1,000 | Software publishers |
| 108 | IBM | 995 | Computer equipment manufacturing |
| 139 | Sage | 775 | Software publishers |
| 157 | NCR Atleos | 659 | Computers, peripherals and software |
Three of these, NCR Voyix, Manhattan Associates and NCR Atleos, are headquartered in Atlanta. Most of the rest are regional operations of companies based elsewhere, such as ADP (Roseland, New Jersey) and Microsoft (Redmond, Washington), which matters if you're selling: budgets and vendor decisions often sit at head office. The Chamber's survey excludes government and public schools and draws partly on the Atlanta Business Chronicle and BusinessWise.
Public tech companies headquartered here
| Company | Headquarters | EDGAR industry | Latest fiscal year revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCR Atleos | Atlanta | Calculating and accounting machines (SIC 3578) | $4,354 million (2025) |
| NCR Voyix | Atlanta | Calculating and accounting machines (SIC 3578) | $2,687 million (2025) |
| First Advantage | Atlanta | Computer processing and data preparation (SIC 7374) | $1,574.4 million (2025) |
| Manhattan Associates | Atlanta | Prepackaged software (SIC 7372) | $1,081.4 million (2025) |
| Agilysys | Alpharetta | Computer integrated systems design (SIC 7373) | $319.3 million (year to 31 March 2026) |
| Cardlytics | Atlanta | Computer programming and data processing (SIC 7370) | $233.3 million (2025) |
| T Stamp | Atlanta | Prepackaged software (SIC 7372) | $3.1 million (2025) |
Headquarters and revenue come from each company's latest 10-K. Four other EDGAR registrants with Atlanta-area addresses are left out: Mynd.ai's 10-K cover gives a Cayman Islands office, Taoping's is in China, Pineapple Express Cannabis reported $16,168 of revenue in its latest annual report, and QumulusAI hasn't filed an annual report.
What kind of tech, and where
| Industry (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Custom computer programming services (541511) | 2,251 | 37,995 |
| Computer systems design services (541512) | 2,012 | 35,120 |
| Facilities management and other computer services (541513, 541519) | 637 | 8,484 |
| Software publishers (5112) | 455 | 30,653 |
| Data processing, hosting and related services (518) | 449 | 21,508 |
| Other information services (5191) | 265 | 8,703 |
Atlanta's systems design firms average about 17 employees, more than twice the Houston figure, so the local integrator bench includes real mid-sized firms, not just consultants. Software publishers average 67.
| County | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Fulton County, Georgia | 2,167 | 79,967 |
| Forsyth County, Georgia | 962 | 4,300 |
| Gwinnett County, Georgia | 854 | 15,444 |
| Cobb County, Georgia | 801 | 19,592 |
| DeKalb County, Georgia | 604 | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Cherokee County, Georgia | 188 | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Fayette County, Georgia | 79 | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Henry County, Georgia | 64 | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
Employee counts marked not reported carry the Census Bureau's high-noise flag: to protect confidentiality it changed them by 5% or more, so they're left out here.
Fulton County, which runs from downtown and Midtown north through Sandy Springs and Alpharetta, has 56% of the jobs. Forsyth County is second by count but its 962 establishments average under five employees: independent consultants and small firms in the northern suburbs. Cobb and Gwinnett have the larger suburban sites. The eight counties shown hold 5,719 establishments; the other 350 are spread across the metro's remaining counties.
Size
| Employees at the establishment | Establishments | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 4,453 | 73.4% |
| 5 to 9 | 502 | 8.3% |
| 10 to 19 | 344 | 5.7% |
| 20 to 49 | 356 | 5.9% |
| 50 to 99 | 160 | 2.6% |
| 100 to 249 | 152 | 2.5% |
| 250 to 499 | 56 | 0.9% |
| 500 or more | 46 | 0.8% |
The Census Bureau withholds the 500-to-999 and 1,000-or-more cells for Atlanta to protect confidentiality, so the last row is the total less the published cells. In bands: 5,299 establishments with 1 to 19 employees, 516 with 20 to 99 and 254 with 100 or more.
Finding Atlanta tech companies by name
| Source | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| City of Atlanta business licenses, 2024 | The Office of Revenue's 2024 license records with business name, DBA, address, NAICS code, opening date, prior-year revenue and employee count. City limits only |
| Metro Atlanta Chamber Top Employers 2025 | The ranked list of the region's largest employers by local headcount |
| Technology Association of Georgia | The state's largest technology association, with societies, chapters and events where local tech firms gather |
| Atlanta Tech Village | A startup hub and coworking campus; its story page shows companies that graduated from it |
The City's license file is unusually rich because it carries revenue and employee counts, so you can size and sort Atlanta firms before you contact any of them. For entities outside the city, check the Georgia Secretary of State's corporations records.
Choosing an Atlanta IT or software partner
- Integrators and managed services: shortlist from the 2,012 systems design and 637 facilities management firms, and ask for named engineers and response times in writing.
- Payments or commerce software: ask for the vendor's compliance reports and references from merchants or banks.
- Custom builds: the 2,251 programming firms; agree code ownership and a fixed first milestone.
For any of them, check the City license record and ask whether your account is run from Atlanta or from head office.
Prospecting Atlanta tech companies
Start by separating headquarters from branches. A Microsoft or Salesforce office in Atlanta may have 1,000 or more people but no budget for your product; the 254 establishments with 100 or more employees include many such sites. The 516 with 20 to 99 are mostly locally run and have a functional owner. The 5,299 under 20 are owner-led. Good triggers include a new payments or retail client, a Chamber or TAG award, a move into a larger Midtown or Alpharetta office, and hiring.
Worked example: a payments compliance consultancy
Illustrative example. The company, people and rates are fictional, to show the method.
Peachtree Gate Advisory (peachtreegate.example) helps software companies that store or process card data get through their annual payment card compliance assessment. It targets Atlanta software publishers and data processors with 20 to 249 employees.
- Establishments with 20 to 249 employees: 356 + 160 + 152 = 668.
- Software publishers and data processors are 904 of 6,069 establishments (15%), so about 100 of those 668.
- Peachtree assumes 60% touch card payments: about 60 accounts.
- Assessments are annual, so it times outreach to each company's renewal and aims for 8 clients in year one.
The hard part is knowing which 60 handle card data. Bebop takes "Atlanta software companies with 20 to 249 employees that process card payments for merchants" and returns matches with the evidence for each.
Subject: [Company]'s next card compliance assessment Hi [first name], With [product] handling payments for [customer type], your annual card compliance assessment probably lands on your team every [month]. Most companies your size spend more time collecting evidence than fixing anything. We prepare the evidence and run a readiness review six weeks before the assessor arrives. What the count covers
CBP counts establishments, single locations with at least one paid employee, for the week of March 12, 2023. A company with sites in Midtown and Alpharetta counts twice, owner-only firms aren't counted, and tech teams inside banks, airlines and retailers count under their employers' industries.
Next step: compare another Southeast market in tech companies in Charlotte, or see how to find decision makers.
