How many IT and tech companies are in San Diego
County Business Patterns (CBP), the Census Bureau's annual count of businesses with employees, puts 2,845 tech establishments in the San Diego-Chula Vista-Carlsbad, CA Metro Area (CBSA 41740) for 2023. The metro area is San Diego County. Tech covers four NAICS industry groups: software publishers (5112), computer systems design and related services (5415), data processing, hosting and related services (518) and other information services (5191).
| Measure | San Diego County, 2023 |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 2,845 |
| Employees | 65,235 |
| Annual payroll | $10,877,282,000 |
| Average employees per establishment | 22.9 |
| Average annual pay | $166,740 |
| Share of US tech establishments | 1.45% (of 196,184) |
The San Diego Regional EDC's research page cites "more than 3,100 software establishments" in the region. Its definition differs from the four CBP groups here, so treat it as a separate measure rather than a correction.
What kinds of IT companies San Diego has
| Industry (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Custom computer programming services (541511) | 1,123 | 23,102 |
| Computer systems design services (541512) | 823 | 11,098 |
| Facilities management and other computer services (541513, 541519) | 200 | 2,327 |
| Software publishers (5112) | 272 | 18,005 |
| Data processing, hosting and related services (518) | 236 | 8,127 |
| Other information services (5191) | 191 | 2,576 |
Two things stand out. Custom programming shops outnumber systems design firms, the integrators and managed service providers most people mean by "IT company". And the 272 software publishers are large for the category, averaging about 66 employees each, which is where most product jobs sit. If you want IT support for an office, you're choosing among the 541512 and 541513 firms; if you want an app or platform built, among the 1,123 programming shops.
Size: many small shops, 99 large sites
| Employees at the establishment | Establishments | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 1,967 | 69.1% |
| 5 to 9 | 321 | 11.3% |
| 10 to 19 | 195 | 6.9% |
| 20 to 49 | 188 | 6.6% |
| 50 to 99 | 75 | 2.6% |
| 100 to 249 | 55 | 1.9% |
| 250 or more | 44 | 1.5% |
The Census Bureau withholds the 250-to-499, 500-to-999 and 1,000-or-more cells for San Diego to protect confidentiality, so the last row is the total less the published cells. In bands: 2,483 establishments with 1 to 19 employees, 263 with 20 to 99 and 99 with 100 or more.
Public tech companies headquartered in San Diego
These SEC-registered public companies give San Diego County addresses as their principal executive offices in their latest 10-K filings:
| Company | City | EDGAR industry | Latest fiscal year revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualcomm | San Diego | Communications equipment (SIC 3663) | $44,284 million (year to 28 September 2025) |
| Teradata | San Diego | Prepackaged software (SIC 7372) | $1,663 million (2025) |
| MaxLinear | Carlsbad | Semiconductors (SIC 3674) | $467.6 million (2025) |
| Mitek Systems | San Diego | Computer peripheral equipment (SIC 3577) | $179.7 million (year to 30 September 2025) |
| RF Industries | San Diego | Electronic connectors (SIC 3678) | $80.6 million (year to 31 October 2025) |
| One Stop Systems | Escondido | Electronic computers (SIC 3571) | $32.2 million (2025) |
Only Teradata falls inside the Census tech count; the others are classified as manufacturers. TuSimple Holdings still lists a San Diego address on EDGAR, but its most recent 10-K covers 2022, so it's left out. For Qualcomm's workforce, see Qualcomm's employee count.
The county's own list of principal employers, in its 2025 annual financial report, puts the US Navy first with 91,317 employees, followed by the Marine Corps at MCRD San Diego and UC San Diego. Cubic Corporation, at 6,000, is the one technology company in its top ten. Defense and research institutions are the buyers many local IT firms are built around.
Finding San Diego IT companies by name
| Source | What it gives you |
|---|---|
| City of San Diego business tax certificates | Every business registered with the City, with DBA, owner, address and NAICS code; updated daily. Filter to 5415 or 5112. City limits only |
| Tech San Diego directory | The industry association's public directory (402 listings when checked), filterable by software, SaaS and IT services |
| San Diego Regional Chamber member directory | Members searchable by name, ZIP code or industry |
| San Diego Regional EDC research | Regional economic reports and industry profiles |
| California Secretary of State bizfile | Entity status, agent and officer names for any California company; free online images |
The tax certificate file is the most useful source here and the one directory sites don't use. It covers the City of San Diego, so pair it with the Chamber directory and bizfile for Carlsbad, Escondido and the rest of the county.
Choosing a San Diego IT company
For managed IT, networks or support, a shortlist of three is enough if each passes these checks:
- Right type of firm. Managed services and integration are NAICS 541512 and 541513; a custom programming shop (541511) may not want your help-desk work.
- Registered where they say. Look the company up in the City's tax certificate data or bizfile and match the legal name to the proposal.
- Licensed for cabling. In California, installing low-voltage communication systems is contractor work under the CSLB's C-7 Low Voltage Systems classification. If the quote includes pulling cable, ask for the license number.
- Coverage you can test. Response times, after-hours support and who covers vacations, in the contract.
- References your size. Two clients with a similar headcount and industry, especially if you handle defense or health data.
Prospecting San Diego tech companies
By size, the buyer changes. At the 2,483 establishments with 1 to 19 employees the founder buys. At the 263 with 20 to 99, look for a head of engineering, an operations lead or a controller, depending on what you sell. At the 99 with 100 or more, expect procurement, security review and several approvers; how to find decision makers covers the titles. Strong local triggers are a new defense or research contract, a funding round, a move into a larger office and engineering hiring.
Worked example: a cloud cost consultancy
Illustrative example. The company, people and rates are fictional, to show the method.
Torrey Cost Labs (torreycost.example) cuts cloud bills for software companies. Cloud spend grows with headcount, so it targets San Diego software publishers and programming firms with 20 to 249 employees.
- Establishments with 20 to 249 employees: 188 + 75 + 55 = 318.
- Software publishers and custom programmers are 1,395 of 2,845 establishments (49%), so about 156 of those 318.
- Torrey assumes 60% run mainly on a public cloud: about 94 accounts.
- Working 30 a month at a 7% meeting rate gives about 2 meetings a month.
The research step, finding which of the 156 run on which cloud and are growing, is where time goes. Bebop takes a prompt like "San Diego software companies with 20 to 249 employees hiring cloud engineers" and returns matches with a playbook for each.
Subject: [Company]'s cloud bill after the last hiring push Hi [first name], [Company] has added [number] engineers since [month]. In our reviews, cloud spend at teams growing that fast tends to run well ahead of what the workloads need, mostly in idle environments. We run a two-week review and hand back a prioritized list of savings, with no tooling to install. Want me to send the checklist we start from? [Your name], Torrey Cost Labs
Reading the numbers
CBP counts establishments, single locations with at least one paid employee, so a company with offices in Sorrento Valley and Carlsbad counts twice and owner-only consultancies don't count at all. Employment is for the week of March 12, 2023. In-house IT teams at the Navy, hospitals and universities count under their employer's industry, and chipmakers count as manufacturers.
Next step: build your list with how to build a prospect list, or compare a programming-led market in tech companies in Austin.

How do I find a good IT support company in San Diego?
Shortlist firms classified as computer systems design or facilities management (NAICS 541512 or 541513), confirm each is registered in the City of San Diego's tax certificate data or California's bizfile, and ask for two references from clients your size. If the work includes installing cabling, ask for the firm's CSLB C-7 low voltage license. Get response times and after-hours coverage in the contract.

Average annual pay at San Diego County tech establishments was $166,740 in 2023, from Census County Business Patterns payroll of $10.88 billion across 65,235 employees.
