This page is for people looking for Utah tech companies: engineers and job seekers, companies choosing a software or IT partner, investors, and B2B sellers whose customers are tech firms. It covers the federal count, the Salt Lake and Utah County split, the public companies headquartered in Utah and the local sources that name the rest.
Utah tech companies by the numbers
County Business Patterns (CBP), the Census Bureau's annual count of businesses with employees, puts 2,480 tech establishments in Utah for 2023, 19th among the states. As used here, the tech total combines software publishers (5112), computer systems design and related services (5415), data processing, hosting and related services (518) and other information services (5191).
| Measure | Utah, 2023 |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 2,480 |
| Employees | 65,738 |
| Annual payroll | $8,234,052,000 (includes a high-noise figure) |
| Average employees per establishment | 26.5 |
| Average annual pay | $125,256 (from payroll that includes a high-noise figure) |
| Share of US tech establishments | 1.26% (of 196,184) |
| Rank among states | 19th |
The payroll total includes the payroll of other information services (5191), which the Census Bureau flagged as high-noise: the noise it adds to protect confidentiality changed that figure by 5% or more. The employee totals carry lower noise flags, so treat the payroll and average pay as approximate.
Utah has fewer tech establishments than Arizona (3,474) but more tech jobs (65,738 against 61,403), because its firms are half again as large on average; see IT companies in Arizona.
A software publisher state
| Industry (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Software publishers (5112) | 418 | 31,018 |
| Custom computer programming services (541511) | 942 | 12,491 |
| Computer systems design services (541512) | 459 | 8,462 |
| Facilities management and other computer services (541513, 541519) | 213 | 1,989 |
| Data processing, hosting and related services (518) | 268 | 9,239 |
| Other information services (5191) | 180 | 2,539 |
Software publishers are 17% of Utah's tech establishments but 47% of its tech jobs, averaging about 74 employees per site. In Arizona and New Jersey, IT services firms hold most tech jobs; in Utah it's product companies. The IT services side is small and lean: 459 systems design firms averaging 18 employees.
Salt Lake County and Utah County
These county figures come from the Census Bureau's county file for the same four industry groups:
| County | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Salt Lake County | 893 | 28,293 |
| Utah County | 766 | 24,129 |
| Davis County | 230 | Not reported here |
| Washington County | 133 | 1,067 |
| Statewide (no single county) | 114 | Not reported here |
| Weber County | 81 | Not reported here |
| Cache County | 71 | Not reported here |
| Summit County | 65 | 533 |
Salt Lake and Utah counties together hold 67% of the establishments and 80% of the tech jobs, and their sites are about the same size, roughly 32 employees each. Utah County, home to Lehi, Provo and American Fork, nearly matches Salt Lake County. Washington County, around St. George, has 133 small firms. Employee counts for Davis, Weber, Cache and the statewide group aren't reported here because at least one industry figure in each carries a high-noise flag from the Census Bureau (changed by 5% or more to protect confidentiality). The rows shown total 2,353; the rest are in smaller counties.
Size
| Employees at the establishment | Establishments | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 1,542 | 62.2% |
| 5 to 9 | 282 | 11.4% |
| 10 to 19 | 222 | 9.0% |
| 20 to 49 | 210 | 8.5% |
| 50 to 99 | 87 | 3.5% |
| 100 to 249 | 75 | 3.0% |
| 250 or more | 62 | 2.5% |
Size classes from 250 employees up are withheld by the Census Bureau to protect confidentiality; the 250-or-more figure is the published total minus the smaller classes. Put another way, 2,046 establishments employ fewer than 20 people, 297 employ 20 to 99 and 137 employ 100 or more.

| FatPipe | Salt Lake City | Prepackaged software (SIC 7372) | $19.2 million (year to 31 March 2026) |
Headquarters and revenue come from each company's latest 10-K. Domo filed its 10-K as Domo, Inc. with an American Fork address; EDGAR shows the company renamed Huckleberry.ai, Inc. in September 2026. Varex is classified as an electronic components maker, so the Census Bureau counts it as a manufacturer. Several of Utah's best-known software companies are private and publish no revenue.

Choosing a Utah software or IT partner
- Product or project? Utah has many product companies and comparatively few integrators, so buying software here is easier than hiring a services firm.
- Pick the county. A Lehi or Provo firm and a Salt Lake City firm can both serve the Wasatch Front, but on-site support from either into St. George or Logan is a different promise.
- Confirm the entity with the Division of Corporations and match it to the contract.
- Ask for references your size, especially from a company in your industry.
Prospecting Utah tech companies
Utah's 137 establishments with 100 or more employees are disproportionately software companies, where buying runs through a functional leader plus procurement and security. The 297 with 20 to 99 are the best mid-market targets: growing product companies with a single budget owner. The 2,046 smaller sites are founder-led. Sell to Salt Lake and Utah counties as two territories, and watch for funding rounds, office moves along the I-15 corridor, new product launches and hiring.
Worked example: a customer support outsourcing firm
Illustrative example. The company, people and rates are fictional, to show the method.
Wasatch Front Support (wasatchsupport.example) runs customer support teams for software companies whose ticket volume has outgrown their in-house team. It targets Utah software publishers and data processing firms with 20 to 249 employees.
- Establishments employing 20 to 249 people: 210 + 87 + 75 = 372.
- Software publishers and data processing firms are 686 of 2,480 establishments (28%), so about 105 of those 372.
- Wasatch assumes half sell to small businesses or consumers, where support volume is high: about 50 accounts.
- A small list means every account gets personal research; winning five is a strong first year.
Reading 105 companies' support pages and job boards to find the ones hiring support agents is the slow part. Bebop takes "Utah software companies with 20 to 249 employees hiring customer support agents" and returns matches with a playbook for each.
Subject: The [number] support roles [Company] is hiring for Hi [first name], I saw [Company] has [number] customer support openings. Hiring that many agents at once usually means the queue is growing faster than you can train people. We staff and run support pods for Utah software companies, trained on your product and working in your tools, so your team can focus on the hardest tickets. Would a cost comparison against hiring be useful? [Your name], Wasatch Front Support
What the count covers
CBP counts establishments, single locations with at least one paid employee, for the week of March 12, 2023. A company with offices in Lehi and Salt Lake City counts twice, owner-only firms aren't counted, and tech teams inside banks, health systems and retailers count under their employers' industries.
Next step: build the list with how to build a prospect list.
