Short answer
Louisiana had 1,729 trucking establishments with paid employees in 2023, employing 16,465 people on a $1.02 billion payroll (Census County Business Patterns). Lafayette, East Baton Rouge and Jefferson parishes have about 115 each, and no establishment has 250 or more employees. FMCSA's register lists 8,684 active for-hire carriers with a Louisiana address. The Louisiana Public Service Commission regulates movers, waste haulers, passenger carriers and tow services, so for freight carriers the federal SAFER record is the main check.

Louisiana trucking in Census data
US Census Bureau County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023, NAICS 484 (Truck Transportation), state of Louisiana:
| Measure (2023) | Louisiana |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 1,729 |
| Employees (pay period including March 12) | 16,465 |
| Annual payroll | $1,017,096,000 |
| Average employees per establishment | 9.5 |
| Average annual pay | $61,773 |
| Share of US trucking establishments | 1.02% of 170,286 |
| Rank among states | 32nd by establishments, 34th by employees |
Four in ten are specialized
| Type of trucking (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees | Per establishment | Average pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Specialized local (484220) | 507 | 3,697 | 7.3 | $61,306 |
| Long-distance truckload (484121) | 427 | 3,861 | 9.0 | $65,935 |
| Local general freight (484110) | 415 | 1,987 | 4.8 | $50,152 |
| Specialized long-distance (484230) | 204 | 3,020 | 14.8 | $73,234 |
| Less-than-truckload (484122) | 111 | 3,006 | 27.1 | $62,729 |
| Household and office moving (484210) | 65 | 894 | 13.8 | $29,631 |
Specialized local is the largest segment by count, and specialized long-distance the best paid. Together they have 711 establishments and 6,717 employees. NAICS illustrates specialized trucking with bulk-liquid, dump, livestock and farm-products hauling locally, and refrigerated, bulk-liquid, car-hauling and hazardous-material trucking between metro areas. Movers are the outlier the other way: $29,631 average pay.
No trucking capital
| Parish | Establishments | Employees | Per establishment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lafayette | 117 | 1,250 | 10.7 |
| East Baton Rouge | 114 | 1,270 | 11.1 |
| Jefferson | 113 | 949 | 8.4 |
| Calcasieu (Lake Charles) | 81 | 692 | 8.5 |
| Caddo (Shreveport) | 78 | 1,069 | 13.7 |
| St. Tammany | 78 | 578 | 7.4 |
| Orleans | 69 | 712 | 10.3 |
| Bossier | 66 | 705 | 10.7 |
| Ouachita (Monroe) | 62 | 611 | 9.9 |
| Tangipahoa | 54 | 875 | 16.2 |
The top three parishes are within four establishments of each other, and the top ten together hold under half the state's establishments. A carrier search in Louisiana means covering several regions at once: Acadiana, the capital region, the New Orleans parishes, Lake Charles and the northwest.
| Employees per establishment | Establishments |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 1,103 |
| 5 to 9 | 198 |
| 10 to 19 | 192 |
| 20 to 49 | 162 |
| 50 to 99 | 61 |
| 100 to 249 | 13 |
| 250 to 499 | Not published |
| 500 to 999 | Not published |
| 1,000 or more | Not published |
The Census Bureau doesn't publish the three largest classes for Louisiana, but the published ones already add up to the 1,729 total, so none of the three can contain an establishment. In broader bands: 1,493 establishments have 1 to 19 employees, 223 have 20 to 99, and 13 have 100 to 249. Louisiana has a real mid-market (223 establishments of 20 to 99) and no giants.
CBP counts establishments with paid employees, not companies. Owner-operators without payroll are excluded, and a plant's or contractor's own trucks are counted in that business's industry.
What the Louisiana Public Service Commission covers
The LPSC's Transportation and Pipelines division regulates intrastate common and contract carriers for hire in household goods, passengers, waste and non-consensual wrecker and tow services, plus liquid petroleum pipelines. General freight isn't on that list, so a freight carrier's main public record is federal. If you are hiring a mover for a move within Louisiana, or a waste hauler, the LPSC certificate is the one to ask for.
The federal register
FMCSA's Company Census File (29 October 2026) lists 12,503 active USDOT registrations with a Louisiana physical address, 7.2 per Census establishment. Without bus operators, 8,684 are for-hire and 3,376 run private fleets only.
| For-hire carriers with a Louisiana address | Count |
|---|---|
| Interstate | 4,316 |
| Louisiana only | 4,365 |
| No power units reported | 1,494 |
| 1 power unit | 4,852 |
| 2 to 10 | 2,003 |
| 11 to 50 | 256 |
| More than 50, with drivers to match | 64 |
| MCS-150 updated in the last 24 months | 46.4% |
Fewer than half of for-hire records meet the 24-month update rule (49 CFR 390.19). New for-hire registrations still active rose from 877 in 2025 to 909 in 2026 through 29 October.
The largest fleets registered in Louisiana
Active for-hire records with a Louisiana address, updated since October 2024, with drivers at least half the power units. We left out waste, equipment-rental and utility-construction fleets.
| Carrier, as registered (trade name) | City | Power units | Drivers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Acme Truck Line Inc (Acme Supply Chain Solutions) | Gretna | 1,116 | 1,065 |
| DOC Energy Services Inc | Bossier City | 320 | 286 |
| R L C Trucking LLC | Shreveport | 170 | 120 |
| TeamOne Logistics LLC | Lafayette | 169 | 164 |
| Fluid Disposal Specialties Inc | Homer | 120 | 180 |
| CNC Oilfield Services LLC | Frierson | 110 | 176 |
| Ferrara Transport Services LLC | Baton Rouge | 99 | 64 |
| Triple G Express Inc | Jefferson | 98 | 98 |
| Lott Oil Company Inc | Natchitoches | 97 | 76 |
| Darwin Express LLC | Kenner | 95 | 98 |
| Big 4 Trucking Inc | Roseland | 95 | 54 |
| Gaubert Oil Company (GOCO Logistics) | Thibodaux | 91 | 57 |
Acme is the only Louisiana-registered for-hire freight fleet reporting more than 500 power units, which matches the Census picture of a state without very large trucking establishments. Oilfield and fuel names (DOC Energy Services, Fluid Disposal Specialties, CNC Oilfield Services, Lott Oil, Gaubert Oil) fill much of the rest. The largest private fleets belong to Linetec Services in Alexandria (1,675 power units) and Entergy Louisiana in Metairie (989). No SEC-listed company in the trucking SIC codes has a Louisiana business address.
What's coming at the port
Port NOLA's Louisiana International Terminal, a container terminal planned at Violet in St. Bernard Parish, lists construction starting in 2026 (subject to change) and connections to six Class I railroads through the New Orleans Public Belt. Its funding page lists $500 million or more from the Port of New Orleans, $180 million from the Legislature and $800 million from partners as of June 2024, plus federal MEGA ($74 million) and INFRA ($226 million) grants. For drayage carriers, that's a new gate to plan for as it opens in phases.
How to vet a Louisiana carrier
- Pull the SAFER snapshot in FMCSA's Company Snapshot for operation type, fleet, inspections and crashes.
- Check interstate authority and insurance in FMCSA's Licensing and Insurance search. Petroleum and most hazardous materials need at least $1,000,000 of liability cover, and hazardous substances in bulk tanks $5,000,000 (49 CFR 387.9).
- Match the specialty to the job: vacuum and tank trucks for fluids, dump trucks for fill, flatbeds for pipe. Ask what the carrier hauled last month and for whom.
- Ask for the LPSC certificate only where it applies: household goods, waste, passengers or non-consensual towing within Louisiana.
- Cover the region you need. With carriers spread across the parishes, line up one in each region you ship from rather than asking a Shreveport carrier to cover Houma.
Prospecting Louisiana trucking companies
| Segment | Size in the data | Who decides | What they buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| One- and two-truck interstate carriers | Most of the 2,710 current interstate carriers with up to 10 power units | The owner | Factoring, insurance, fuel cards, ELD and filings |
| Oilfield, fuel and tank fleets | Bossier, Caddo, Lafayette, Lafourche registrations | Owner or operations manager | Tank and vacuum equipment, safety training, repairs |
| Mid-size regional fleets | 223 establishments with 20 to 99 employees | Owner with a safety or shop manager | Telematics, maintenance, recruiting |
| Private fleets of utilities and contractors | 3,376 private-only records | Fleet manager at the parent | Fleet services, upfits, compliance |
The method for turning register filters into a call list is in how to build a prospect list.
Illustrative example. The firm, fees and conversion rate are invented; the carrier count is from FMCSA's October 2026 file.
Bayou Freight Funding (bayoufunding.example) buys small carriers' freight invoices and pays within a day for a 3% fee. Its list is interstate for-hire carriers in Louisiana with 1 to 10 power units and a current MCS-150: 2,710 carriers with 5,204 power units. If 2% sign up (54 carriers) and each factors $20,000 of invoices a month, that's $1.08 million a month and about $389,000 a year in fees. The message works best when a carrier has just added a truck and is waiting on 30-day broker payments. Bebop can find carriers like these and research each one before you reach out.

Questions people ask
How many trucking companies are in Louisiana?
Census County Business Patterns counted 1,729 trucking establishments with paid employees in Louisiana in 2023, employing 16,465 people. FMCSA's register lists 12,503 active USDOT registrations with a Louisiana address in October 2026, 8,684 of them for-hire and 3,376 private-only, because it also includes owner-operators without employees and fleets of other businesses.
What is the largest trucking company in Louisiana?
By power units in FMCSA's register, the largest Louisiana-registered for-hire freight fleet is Acme Truck Line in Gretna, trading as Acme Supply Chain Solutions, with 1,116 power units and 1,065 drivers. No other Louisiana freight carrier reports more than 500. Census data show no Louisiana trucking establishment with 250 or more employees in 2023.
Does the Louisiana Public Service Commission regulate trucking companies?
Only some. The LPSC's Transportation and Pipelines division regulates intrastate for-hire carriers of household goods, passengers and waste, and non-consensual wrecker and tow services, plus liquid petroleum pipelines. General freight trucking isn't on that list, so freight carriers are checked mainly through FMCSA's SAFER and Licensing and Insurance records.
Where are most trucking companies in Louisiana?
They're spread out. Lafayette Parish has 117 trucking establishments, East Baton Rouge 114 and Jefferson 113, according to Census County Business Patterns 2023, followed by Calcasieu (81), Caddo and St. Tammany (78 each). East Baton Rouge has the most trucking employees, 1,270. No parish has more than 7% of the state's establishments.
How do I check a Louisiana trucking company?
Search its USDOT number in FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot for operation type, fleet, inspections and crashes, and check that its MCS-150 was updated within 24 months. Confirm interstate authority and insurance in FMCSA's Licensing and Insurance search, at least $1,000,000 for petroleum and most hazardous materials. For movers and waste haulers, also ask for the LPSC certificate.
