| Average employees per establishment | 14.9 |
| Average annual pay | $61,494 |

Utah's specialized tilt
| Type of trucking (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees | Average annual pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Long-distance truckload (484121) | 602 | 7,771 | $59,516 |
| Local general freight (484110) | 501 | 3,390 | $51,278 |

| Household and office moving (484210) | 85 | 1,175 | $35,797 |
Specialized freight, which in the NAICS definitions covers refrigerated, tanker, flatbed, car-hauling and dump trucking, is 29.8% of Utah's establishments and 41.5% of its trucking jobs. The 184 specialized long-distance establishments average 41.8 employees, almost as many jobs as the 602 truckload ones. Specialized local carriers pay $78,426 on average, the highest of any segment.
Wasatch Front and beyond
| County | Establishments | Employees | Employees per site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salt Lake | 522 | 12,538 | 24.0 |
| Utah (Provo, Orem) | 210 | 917 | 4.4 |
| Davis | 163 | 2,033 | 12.5 |
| Weber (Ogden) | 133 | 971 | 7.3 |
| Box Elder | 110 | 772 | 7.0 |
| Washington (St. George) | 109 | 1,254 | 11.5 |
| Uintah (Vernal) | 107 | 633 | 5.9 |
| Cache (Logan) | 76 | 782 | 10.3 |
Salt Lake County has 28.7% of the establishments and 46.3% of the jobs, and its 36 less-than-truckload sites employ 3,076 people. Utah County is the opposite: 210 establishments averaging 4.4 employees, mostly small local and materials haulers. Uintah County, in the Uinta Basin, has 31 specialized local establishments, almost a third of its total.
| Employees per establishment | Establishments |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 1,276 |
| 5 to 9 | 195 |
| 10 to 19 | 142 |
| 20 to 49 | 106 |
| 50 to 99 | 51 |
| 100 to 249 | 32 |
| 250 to 499 | 7 |
| 500 to 999 | 6 |
| 1,000 or more | 1 |
In broader bands: 1,613 establishments have 1 to 19 employees, 157 have 20 to 99 and 46 have 100 or more. These are establishments with paid employees; owner-operators without staff are left out, and private fleets count in their owners' industries.
Three ways to count Utah trucking
| Source | Figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Census County Business Patterns, 2023 | 27,065 employees at 1,816 establishments | Paid employees of businesses whose main activity is trucking |
| Utah Trucking Association | 90,000 trucking industry jobs, "1 in 14 jobs in the state" | The association's own estimate of the wider industry |
| FMCSA Company Census File, October 2026 | 23,059 active carrier registrations | Every USDOT registration with a Utah address, owner-operators and private fleets included |
The gap between 27,065 and 90,000 is mostly definition: truck drivers at retailers, contractors, distributors and utilities work in their employers' industries, not in NAICS 484. If you sell to anyone who runs trucks in Utah, the register is the broader list.
In the federal register
Carriers fill in these fields themselves on form MCS-150. Of Utah's 23,059 active registrations, 72.4% are intrastate only, 48.6% are private fleets only, 46.8% list building materials or construction (one combined figure, because FMCSA's open-data file records the two categories identically) and 53.0% of those reporting trucks have one. Cargo types are self-reported like the rest, and FMCSA's open-data file doesn't always match a carrier's own SAFER record, so treat the cargo share as indicative. Salt Lake City and Ogden addresses lead.
The largest for-hire freight carriers by power units, counting only records updated in 2024 or later whose driver numbers match the fleet:
| Carrier (legal name, trade name) | City | Power units | Drivers |
|---|---|---|---|
| CR England (C.R. England) | Salt Lake City | 3,807 | 4,338 |
| Maverik Logistics | Salt Lake City | 712 | 558 |
| Barney Trucking | Salina | 584 | 355 |
| Pride Transport | Salt Lake City | 526 | 512 |
| Teton Petroleum Transportation | Morgan | 378 | 199 |
| Andrus Transportation Services | St. George | 309 | 337 |
| D P Curtis Trucking | Richfield | 266 | 133 |
| Velocity Rail Solutions | Draper | 265 | 447 |
| Maxway | Salt Lake City | 248 | 166 |
Private fleets are big here: Alsco (3,579 power units), Swire Coca-Cola USA (1,711), PacifiCorp (1,562), Staker & Parson (1,306) and Suncore Construction and Materials, trading as Sunroc (1,101). No SEC-listed trucking company is headquartered in Utah.
Utah rules and checks
UDOT's Motor Carrier Division publishes Utah's permitting, registration and safety rules for carriers, and notes that Utah's definition of an intrastate commercial motor vehicle (Utah Code 72-9-102) changed effective 1 May 2024. Check UDOT's current definition before assuming a small truck is exempt. For any carrier:
- Look up the USDOT number in FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot for inspections and crashes.
- For interstate for-hire work, confirm authority and insurance in FMCSA's Licensing and Insurance search: $750,000 minimum for general freight, more for hazmat (49 CFR 387.9).
- For winter lanes over the passes, ask how the carrier handles chain requirements and weather holds.
- For materials hauling, ask about truck types (end dump, belly dump, transfer), standby charges and who carries the load permits.
Selling to Utah carriers
Illustrative example. The service and its rates are invented; the counts are from FMCSA's register.
Wasatch Mobile Diesel (wasatchdiesel.example) repairs trucks on the customer's yard and cleans diesel particulate filters. In the register, 1,841 Utah carriers list building materials or construction cargo and report 5 to 50 power units: enough trucks that one in the shop costs real money, rarely enough to employ a full-time mechanic. Starting with Salt Lake, Utah and Davis counties, the owner or shop lead decides; at a 5% reply rate across the state list, about 90 conversations, and if one in six books a yard visit, 15 new accounts. Bebop can find fleets matching that description and research each first. For the bigger fleets, see how to find decision makers.
Subject: Trucks down on [company]'s yard Hi [first name], With [number] trucks hauling for jobs along the Wasatch Front, I'd guess a DPF fault or a dead sensor costs you a truck-day more often than you'd like. We come to your yard, diagnose on the spot and clean filters same day, so the truck is back on a job instead of in a shop queue. Could we do a free yard visit on [day] and check your three oldest trucks? [Your name]
