Short answer
The NAICS code for a general hospital is 622110, General Medical and Surgical Hospitals, which includes general children's hospitals and micro-hospitals. Psychiatric and substance abuse hospitals are 622210. Specialty hospitals, such as cancer, orthopedic, rehabilitation and long-term care hospitals, are 622310. Freestanding ERs and surgery centers are 621493. The SIC codes are 8062 General Medical and Surgical Hospitals, 8063 Psychiatric Hospitals and 8069 Specialty Hospitals, Except Psychiatric.
- County Business Patterns 2023 counts 7,523 hospital establishments (NAICS 622) with 6,344,178 employees, including government-sponsored hospitals.
- General hospitals (622110) are 5,777 of those establishments and employ 5,815,843 people, about 1,007 each.
- 1,695 general hospital establishments have 1,000 or more employees.
- All three hospital codes have an SBA size standard of $47.0 million in average annual receipts.

The NAICS codes for hospitals
All three sit in Subsector 622, Hospitals. Each Census definition starts with establishments "known and licensed as" that type of hospital, which maintain inpatient beds, feed their patients and have an organized medical staff.
| Code | Official title | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 622110 | General Medical and Surgical Hospitals | Inpatient diagnosis and treatment, surgical and nonsurgical, for a wide variety of conditions; includes general children's hospitals, osteopathic hospitals and micro-hospitals |
| 622210 | Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Hospitals | Inpatient diagnosis, treatment and monitoring for mental illness or substance use disorders, including detoxification and psychiatric children's hospitals |
| 622310 | Specialty (except Psychiatric and Substance Abuse) Hospitals | Inpatient care for a specific disease or condition: cancer, orthopedic, eye and ENT, maternity, neurological, physical rehabilitation, and long-term care for the chronically ill |
How to choose, and what isn't a hospital
The cross-references send "hospitals" that aren't licensed or run as hospitals elsewhere:
| If the establishment mainly... | Code |
|---|---|
| Treats a wide range of conditions, inpatient | 622110 |
| Treats psychiatric or addiction patients, inpatient, with medical treatment | 622210 |
| Treats one type of condition, inpatient, or provides long-term hospital care | 622310 |
| Provides rehabilitation hospital care after injury or illness | 622310 |
| Treats mental health or addiction on an outpatient basis only | 621420 Outpatient Mental Health and Substance Abuse Centers |
| Provides residential treatment emphasizing counseling over medical treatment | 623220 Residential Mental Health and Substance Abuse Facilities |
| Provides inpatient nursing and rehabilitation for convalescence | 623110 Nursing Care Facilities (Skilled Nursing Facilities) |
| Provides residential care for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities | 623210 |
| Runs a freestanding emergency department or ambulatory surgery center | 621493 Freestanding Ambulatory Surgical and Emergency Centers |
| Treats animals | 541940 Veterinary Services |
A hospital's outpatient clinics, labs, imaging and pharmacy stay in its code when they're part of the hospital establishment. A health system's headquarters that manages its hospitals is 551114 (corporate, subsidiary and regional managing offices), and a separately located physician practice it owns is 621111.
The SIC codes for hospitals
| SIC | Title | NAICS 2022 |
|---|---|---|
| 8062 | General Medical and Surgical Hospitals | 622110 |
| 8063 | Psychiatric Hospitals | 622210 |
| 8069 | Specialty Hospitals, Except Psychiatric | 622110 (children's hospitals), 622210 (substance abuse hospitals), 622310 (all others) |
8062 and 8063 map one to one. 8069 doesn't, because the SIC manual put children's hospitals and alcohol and drug rehabilitation hospitals in the specialty code, while NAICS moves them to the general and psychiatric codes. On SEC EDGAR, hospital operators file under 8062 or the group code 8060 (Services-Hospitals).
How many hospitals there are
County Business Patterns normally leaves out government, but its methodology makes an exception for hospitals: government-sponsored hospitals are included. The 2023 figures, on a 2017 NAICS basis (these codes didn't change in 2022):
| Code | Establishments | Employees | Annual payroll ($1,000) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 622110 General Medical and Surgical Hospitals | 5,777 | 5,815,843 | 472,381,030 |
| 622210 Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Hospitals | 751 | 232,220 | 16,068,191 |
| 622310 Specialty Hospitals | 995 | 296,115 | 23,360,584 |
| 622 Hospitals total | 7,523 | 6,344,178 | 511,809,805 |
General hospitals are big establishments: 1,695 of the 5,777 have 1,000 or more employees, 899 have 500 to 999 and 943 have 250 to 499. But 839 have fewer than 50 employees and 555 fewer than five, so filter by size before treating every establishment in the code as a full hospital. The states with the most general hospital establishments are California (600), Texas (491), Florida (300), Pennsylvania (225) and New York (210). Specialty hospitals are concentrated in Texas (151) and Louisiana (71).
Other counts differ because they count licensed or certified hospitals rather than payroll establishments; the list of hospitals compares them.
SBA size standards
All three hospital codes have a size standard of $47.0 million in average annual receipts in the SBA's table effective March 17, 2023, so only the smallest independent and rural hospitals count as small. Related codes: 621493 freestanding surgery and emergency centers $19.0 million, 623110 nursing facilities $34.0 million.
Where the code gets used
- Vendor and data records. Suppliers and data providers classify customers by code. Record each facility under its own code, so a filter on 622110 doesn't drop a system's rehabilitation or behavioral hospitals.
- Federal contracts. Agencies buying hospital services under a solicitation use one code, and its size standard applies.
- Tax returns. The IRS Schedule C list groups all three as 622000, Hospitals, a tax code rather than a NAICS code.
Finding hospital companies
Investor-owned hospital operators file with the SEC under SIC 8062 (EDGAR list for SIC 8062) or 8060. The largest by revenue in their latest 10-K:
| Company | EDGAR SIC | Headquarters | 2025 revenue | Facilities (December 31, 2025 unless stated) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HCA Healthcare | 8062 | Nashville, TN | $75,600 million | 190 hospitals (179 general acute care, 7 behavioral, 4 rehabilitation) |
| Tenet Healthcare | 8062 | Dallas, TX | $21,310 million (net operating revenues) | 50, plus ambulatory surgery business |
| Universal Health Services | 8062 | King of Prussia, PA | $17,364.8 million (net revenues) | 375 inpatient facilities (acute care and behavioral health) at February 25, 2026 |
| Community Health Systems | 8062 | Franklin, TN | $12,485 million (net operating revenues) | 69 affiliated hospitals |
| Encompass Health | 8060 | Birmingham, AL | $5,935.2 million | 173 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals |
HCA's own facilities show why one company needs several codes: its general acute care hospitals are 622110, its behavioral hospitals 622210, its rehabilitation hospitals 622310 and its surgery centers 621493. Nonprofit and government hospitals have no listed shares and don't file 10-Ks; for those, use the code with a size filter, and see selling to hospitals for how they buy. Bebop finds hospitals and health systems from a plain-language description and researches each account.
Worked example
Illustrative example. The organization and figures are invented to show the method.
Valley Ridge Health (valleyridge.example) is a nonprofit system with a 320-bed general hospital, a 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital on a separate campus, two freestanding emergency departments and a home office.
- The general hospital: 622110.
- The rehabilitation hospital: 622310, because it's separately licensed as a rehabilitation hospital.
- The freestanding emergency departments: 621493.
- The home office: 551114.
- SIC codes on a supplier's form: 8062 for the system; 8069 for the rehabilitation hospital.
A vendor selling to Valley Ridge should record each facility under its own code, since a list filtered on 622110 alone misses the rehabilitation hospital and the ERs.
Next step: see how hospitals buy and who decides in selling to hospitals.

SEC filers also use the group code 8060.
What is the NAICS code for a children's hospital?
A general children's hospital is 622110, General Medical and Surgical Hospitals, in the Census index. A children's hospital that specializes in one condition is 622310, and a psychiatric children's hospital is 622210. How many hospitals are in the US?
County Business Patterns 2023 counts 7,523 hospital establishments (NAICS 622) with 6,344,178 employees, including government-sponsored hospitals: 5,777 general, 751 psychiatric and substance abuse, and 995 specialty. That counts establishments with payroll, and some small ones may not be full hospitals, so registries of licensed or Medicare-certified hospitals give different totals. Use the registry that matches your purpose.
