This page is for anyone who needs the number of gyms in America, and for companies that sell to them: fitness equipment and servicing, club management software, payments, cleaning and facilities, insurance, nutrition products and staffing. It sets the official and industry counts side by side, breaks them down by state, size and owner, and shows how to build a list and who buys.
How many gyms there are in the US
| Source | Count | Date | What it counts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Census County Business Patterns (NAICS 713940) | 41,556 | 2023 | Fitness and recreational sports centers with paid employees: gyms, fitness studios, pools, rinks and racquet clubs |
| Health & Fitness Association (HFA) | 55,294 | Released May 2024 | Health club and studio locations, in an economic study by John Dunham and Associates |
| HFA membership survey | 81 million members | 2025 | Americans aged six and over with a fitness facility membership, from a survey of about 18,000 people |
| Planet Fitness 10-K | 2,896 clubs | 31 December 2025 | One chain, including clubs outside the US |
Why the counts differ
- What counts as a gym. The Census industry includes yoga and Pilates fitness studios, but puts yoga and Pilates instruction schools in education and personal trainers who have no facility in personal services. Ice rinks, swimming pools and tennis clubs sit in the same industry as gyms.
- Employees. County Business Patterns counts only locations with paid employees, so an owner-run studio with no staff isn't in it. The Census nonemployer figures don't separate gyms from golf courses, marinas and bowling centers.
- Industry methods. HFA's count comes from an economic impact study of clubs and studios with its own method, and it's 13,738 higher than the Census count.
- Gyms inside other businesses. Fitness rooms in apartment buildings, hotels, offices and schools are usually counted as part of those places, not as gyms.
Gyms by size
| Employees at the location | Fitness centers, 2023 | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 5 | 16,986 | 40.9% |
| 5 to 9 | 7,544 | 18.2% |
| 10 to 19 | 8,082 | 19.4% |
| 20 to 49 | 5,735 | 13.8% |
| 50 to 99 | 2,059 | 5.0% |
| 100 or more | 1,150 | 2.8% |
Fitness centers paid $13.5 billion in wages to 708,273 employees, about $19,070 a head (our calculation). By legal form, 15,108 locations are S corporations, 10,555 partnerships, 5,919 C corporations, 4,894 sole proprietorships and 4,826 nonprofits. The nonprofit locations, such as YMCAs and community centers, are large: they employ 187,306 people, 26% of the industry's workforce, about 39 per location.
Gyms by state
| State | Fitness centers, 2023 | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| California | 5,371 | 86,970 |
| Texas | 3,465 | 53,039 |
| Florida | 2,791 | 39,978 |
| New York | 2,498 | 45,436 |
| Pennsylvania | 1,637 | 27,888 |
| Illinois | 1,621 | 32,618 |
| New Jersey | 1,495 | 28,262 |
| North Carolina | 1,415 | 23,688 |
| Ohio | 1,294 | 22,860 |
| Massachusetts | 1,230 | 25,109 |
Chains and franchise groups
Public chains report their counts in their annual reports:
| Chain | Locations | As of | Ownership |
|---|---|---|---|
| Planet Fitness | 2,896 clubs in all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico and five other countries | 31 December 2025 | 2,604 franchised and 292 company-owned |
| Xponential Fitness (boutique studio brands) | 2,606 open studios in North America | 31 December 2025 | 1,269 franchisees |
| Life Time | 189 centers in 31 states and one Canadian province | 31 December 2025 | Company-operated; 55 owned and 134 leased |
The Planet Fitness numbers show where the buying power sits. Its 2,604 franchised clubs are run by 86 franchisee groups, about 30 clubs each; about 98% of franchised clubs belong to a group with at least three, and the largest franchisee owns 208. Planet Fitness also says it provides Planet Fitness-branded equipment from leading suppliers and gets better purchasing terms and warranties for the system. For a branded club, the decision is often made by the franchisee group or the brand, not at the club.
Demand: how many people go to the gym
HFA's 2026 report counted 81 million fitness facility members in 2025, up 5.2% on 2024 and 26.1% of Americans aged six and over, who made nearly 7 billion visits. Planet Fitness alone ended 2025 with about 20.8 million members.
How to get a list of gyms
| Source | What it has | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Franchise disclosure documents | The FTC Franchise Rule requires each franchisor's disclosure document to list every current franchisee with the address and phone number of each outlet | PDF, Item 20 of each brand's document |
| State health club registers | Clubs that must file under state consumer laws; New York's lists 215 clubs that filed proof of financial security | Open data in some states |
| SEC EDGAR | Location counts, states and franchise structure for public chains | 10-K filings |
| Census County Business Patterns | Counts by county and ZIP code, with size bands; no names | Free files |
State registers are partial: New York's 215 filings compare with 2,498 fitness centers with employees in the state. For franchised brands, the disclosure document's franchisee list is the most complete public source of owners.
Who buys at a gym
As general guidance:
| Type of gym | Who usually decides |
|---|---|
| Independent gym or studio | The owner, often also the head coach or instructor |
| Franchised club | The franchisee group's operations or facilities lead, within the brand's approved vendor list |
| Company-run chain | Procurement, facilities and IT at headquarters |
| Nonprofit (YMCA, community center) | The CEO or branch executive; the board for capital projects |
| Gyms inside other buildings | The property, hotel or facilities manager |
Worked example: equipment servicing in Colorado
Illustrative example. The company and its rates are invented; the counts are Census County Business Patterns figures for 2023.
The seller: Front Range Fitness Service (frontrange-service.example) repairs and maintains commercial gym equipment. The territory: Colorado.
- Count the market. Colorado has 972 fitness centers with employees. 138 have 20 to 49 employees, 51 have 50 to 99 and 18 have 100 or more: 207 sites large enough for a service contract.
- Sort by owner. For each branded site, look up the franchisee in the brand's disclosure document; one group may hold ten sites. Independents and nonprofits are approached one by one.
- Do the arithmetic. At an illustrative $4,800 a site each year, winning 15% of the 207 sites gives 31 contracts and $148,800 a year. Winning one franchisee group with 12 sites gets there faster than 12 separate sales.
- Find the buyer. Finding the operations lead at each franchisee group, and what's changed (new sites, a remodel, an acquisition), is the slow part; Bebop finds the contacts and researches each company in the list.
Subject: Equipment uptime across your [number] Colorado clubs Hi [first name], I saw [group] opened [new location] this year, which I think makes [number] clubs on the Front Range. Multi-club operators tell us the cost isn't the repair, it's the treadmill that sits with an out-of-order sign for a week while members notice. We service commercial equipment for groups with 5 to 30 sites, with one contract and one report across all of them. Would a 15-minute call to compare your last quarter's downtime be useful? Questions people ask
How many gyms are in the US?
41,556 fitness and recreational sports centers had paid employees in 2023, according to the Census Bureau's County Business Patterns, which includes gyms, fitness studios, pools, rinks and racquet clubs. The Health & Fitness Association counts 55,294 health club and studio locations, from its own economic study. Neither count includes fitness rooms in apartments, hotels or offices.
How many people go to the gym in the US?
81 million Americans held a fitness facility membership in 2025, according to the Health & Fitness Association's 2026 report, a record and up 5.2% on 2024. That's 26.1% of Americans aged six and over. Members made nearly 7 billion visits. The figures come from HFA's annual tracking survey of about 18,000 US residents.
Which state has the most gyms?
California, with 5,371 fitness and recreational sports centers with employees in 2023, followed by Texas (3,465), Florida (2,791), New York (2,498) and Pennsylvania (1,637), according to Census County Business Patterns. New York's gyms employ more people than Florida's: 45,436 against 39,978. The counts are of locations, so each club in a chain counts separately.
How many Planet Fitness locations are there?
2,896 clubs at 31 December 2025, according to Planet Fitness's annual report: 2,604 franchised and 292 company-owned, in all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, Canada, Panama, Mexico, Australia and Spain. The franchised clubs are run by 86 franchisee groups, the largest with 208 clubs. Planet Fitness ended 2025 with about 20.8 million members.
Where can I get a list of gyms?
There's no national register. For franchised brands, the franchise disclosure document must list every current franchisee with each outlet's address and phone number. Some states register health clubs under consumer protection laws; New York publishes its filings as open data. Census County Business Patterns gives counts by ZIP code to size a territory, and public chains list their locations in annual reports and on their websites.
