Architecture firms in Boston: 618 offices across Greater Boston, licensing and how to choose

Cambridge's county has more architecture offices than downtown Boston's, but Suffolk County has twice the jobs and two in three of the region's firms with 20 or more people. Architects are more than twice as concentrated in Greater Boston's workforce as nationally, so you have choices; the work is narrowing them.

This page is for building owners, institutions, developers and homeowners hiring an architect in Greater Boston, for designers choosing where to work, and for companies that sell to architecture firms. It sets out the Census count, where the firms sit, the Massachusetts rules that apply, and how to approach them.

Greater Boston's architecture market in numbers

County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023 counts offices in NAICS 541310, Architectural Services, in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton, MA-NH Metro Area (CBSA 14460): Suffolk, Middlesex, Norfolk, Essex and Plymouth counties in Massachusetts, plus Rockingham and Strafford in New Hampshire.

Boston has 2.71% of the country's architecture offices but 3.71% of the jobs in them, so its firms run larger than average (US averages are our calculation from the same release).

Pay averages are our calculation from each county's published payroll and employees. Suffolk County, home to downtown Boston, is where the mid-size and large firms are: it has 39 offices with 20 to 49 employees, 14 with 50 to 99 and seven with 100 to 249, which is 60 of the metro's 89 offices with 20 or more people. Middlesex, which includes Cambridge, Somerville and the western suburbs, has more offices but mostly small ones: 150 of its 229 have fewer than five employees.

The Census Bureau doesn't publish the classes above 250 here; the single office in that row is the total less the published classes. CBP counts establishments with paid employees, so a firm with offices in Boston and Portsmouth counts twice, and sole practitioners without staff are left out.

Architect, engineer, interior designer or design-builder?

An architecture firm plans and designs buildings, produces the construction documents that a building official approves, and usually observes construction for the owner. The Census Bureau classifies firms that both design and build as construction, not architecture. In Greater Boston the same CBP release counts 1,147 engineering offices (541330), 543 commercial and institutional builders (236220, which includes design-build firms), 322 interior design offices (541410) and 105 landscape architecture offices (541320). If your project is mainly structural or mechanical, an engineering firm may lead; if it's interiors without code or structural changes, an interior designer may be enough; if you want one contract and a fixed price early, a design-builder.

Licensing in Massachusetts and New Hampshire

Massachusetts licenses architects through the Board of Registration of Architects. Search a license in the state's license search, which NCARB's architect lookup links for every state, including New Hampshire for the two counties north of the border.

The Boston Society for Architecture's summary of the board's title rules is useful for clients and job seekers alike:

  • Anyone using "architect" or a derivative in a job title must be licensed, except for the specific title "Intern Architect."
  • An architect licensed only in another state must say where, and may not provide services in Massachusetts until licensed there.
  • Licenses belong to people, so individual employees, not firms, are accountable for how their titles are used.

How public owners pick designers: the DSB

For state building projects and Commonwealth charter school projects, designers are selected by the Designer Selection Board, which the BSA describes as an autonomous eleven-member board. Its database system, Autocene, holds firms' profiles and evaluations for public projects across Massachusetts, and its statewide designer database is searchable for minority-, woman- and veteran-owned architecture firms. For a private owner, that is a ready-made list of firms with public-sector experience and the subconsultants they team with.

A shortlist process for private clients

  1. Write the brief. Building type, size, budget, schedule and approvals (zoning relief, historic commissions).
  2. Long-list six to eight firms from comparable buildings you've seen, the BSA's membership directory and the DSB database.
  3. Verify licenses for the architect who will stamp the drawings.
  4. Interview three. Ask who will run the job day to day and to see a set of construction documents.
  5. Use a standard contract. AIA's B101-2017 is the standard owner-architect agreement, and B103-2017 is its version for a complex project. Compare scope line by line before comparing fees.

The BSA and careers

The Boston Society for Architecture is the AIA chapter for the region and a community nonprofit, with a membership directory and a job board. For pay, the Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2025 estimates for the metro:

OccupationEmployedMean annual wageMedian annual wageLocation quotient
Architects (17-1011)3,930$118,960$119,1202.12
Landscape architects (17-1012)350$92,700$91,5201.02
Architectural and civil drafters (17-3011)2,150$78,360$79,3101.19
Interior designers (27-1025)1,290$85,450$81,4801.04

A location quotient of 2.12 means architects are more than twice as concentrated in Boston's workforce as nationally. The national mean for architects is $106,260. SEC records show no exchange-listed architecture company headquartered in Greater Boston.

Prospecting Boston architecture firms

Split the market by where decisions are made. The 529 offices with fewer than 20 employees are owner-run, so the principal is the buyer. The 81 offices with 20 to 99 have operations, IT and marketing leads, and most are in Suffolk County. The eight with 100 or more add procurement and a longer sales cycle. A firm with recent state or school projects on its site is likely to need estimating, specification and other outside support.

Illustrative example. The company, rates and results are invented.

Granite Cost Advisors (granitecost.example) prepares independent cost estimates that design teams submit with public projects. It targets the 81 offices with 20 to 99 employees, drops an estimated 25% that are branches of national firms, and is left with about 61. It researches which ones have recent public or school work, finds 25, and calls the principal in charge of each. Booking six meetings and winning two estimating jobs at $9,000 would cover a quarter's outreach. Finding those 25 is the work; Bebop researches each account in a list and explains why it fits.

Call opener for a principal in charge
Hi [first name], it's [your name] from [company]. I'll be quick.

I saw [firm] is working on [public or school project]. We produce independent cost estimates at schematic and design development for teams on state and municipal jobs, so your numbers hold up in review.

Who on your team owns estimates on [project]? If it's you, is a 15-minute call next week worth it?

Next step: compare the Boston market with the region's builders in construction companies in Boston.

Questions people ask

How many architecture firms are there in Boston?

Greater Boston had 618 architecture offices with paid employees in 2023, by the Census Bureau's County Business Patterns, employing 7,023 people. Middlesex County, which includes Cambridge, had 229 and Suffolk County, which includes Boston, had 188. These are office locations rather than companies, and architects working alone without employees aren't counted, so the number of practices is somewhat higher.

How do I check if an architect is licensed in Massachusetts?

Use the Commonwealth's license search on the occupational licensing portal, which covers architects registered by the Massachusetts Board of Registration of Architects. NCARB's architect lookup page links to it and to every other state's roster. For a firm in Rockingham or Strafford County, check the New Hampshire roster too, and confirm the license of the person who will stamp your drawings.

What is the Designer Selection Board in Massachusetts?

The Designer Selection Board (DSB) is the body that selects designers for state building projects and Commonwealth charter school projects. The Boston Society for Architecture describes it as an autonomous eleven-member board. It runs a database system, Autocene, that public agencies and municipalities use to evaluate firms, and a statewide designer database searchable for minority-, woman- and veteran-owned architecture firms.

Can you call yourself an architect in Massachusetts without a license?

No. Massachusetts restricts the title: anyone using architect or a derivative of it in a job title must be licensed, with an exception for the specific title Intern Architect. Architects licensed only in another state may say where they're licensed but can't provide services in Massachusetts until they're licensed there. Individual employees, not their firms, are accountable for how their titles are used.

How much do architects make in Boston?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics put the mean annual wage for architects in the Boston-Cambridge-Newton metro at $118,960 in May 2025, with a median of $119,120 and 3,930 employed. That compares with a national mean of $106,260. Averaged over all employees of Boston architecture offices, including drafters and administrative staff, pay was $108,939 in 2023.
