Short answer
The Chicago metro had 842 architecture offices with paid employees in 2023, employing 7,833 people on a $790 million payroll, according to the Census Bureau; Cook County had 591 of them. Illinois requires any firm offering architecture to register with IDFPR as a professional design firm led by a licensed Illinois architect, and 1,704 firms hold that registration. Verify the firm and the architect, then compare qualifications before fees.
- 842 architecture offices in the Chicago metro employ 7,833 people, 3.69% of the 22,805 US offices.
- Cook County has 70% of the offices and 82% of the jobs; DuPage is second with 100 offices.
- IDFPR lists 9,060 licensed architects and 1,704 design firms registered for architecture (1 October 2026).
- Chicago issued 540 new construction permits in 2025 on the architect self-certification track.
- Chicago-metro architects earned a median $81,790 in May 2025, according to BLS.

This report is for anyone hiring an architect in the Chicago area, from a homeowner planning an addition to a developer or a school district, for architects and drafters sizing up employers, and for sellers whose customers are design firms. It covers the Census count by county, the Illinois firm registration rule, what the city's permit data shows, and how to hire and prospect.
The Census count
County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023 counts establishments in NAICS 541310, Architectural Services, in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, IL-IN Metro Area (CBSA 16980). The Census Bureau defines the industry as planning and designing buildings by applying knowledge of design, construction procedures, zoning, building codes and materials.
| Measure (2023) | Chicago metro |
|---|---|
| Architecture offices | 842 |
| Employees | 7,833 |
| Annual payroll | $789,978,000 |
| Employees per office | 9.3 |
| Average annual pay | $100,853 |
| Share of US architecture offices | 3.69% of 22,805 |
| Employees at the office | Offices |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 550 |
| 5 to 9 | 117 |
| 10 to 19 | 88 |
| 20 to 49 | 59 |
| 50 to 99 | 17 |
| 100 to 249 | 9 |
| 250 or more | Not published |
Grouped, that's 755 offices with fewer than 20 employees, 76 with 20 to 99 and 11 with 100 or more. The Census Bureau withholds the three largest size classes here, so the 11 is the total less the published classes, which leaves two offices with 250 or more people. CBP counts establishments with paid staff, not companies: a national firm's Loop studio is one establishment, and an architect working alone with no employees isn't counted.
Cook County and the collar counties
| County | Offices | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Cook County, Illinois | 591 | 6,450 |
| DuPage County, Illinois | 100 | 772 |
| Lake County, Illinois | 63 | 223 |
| Kane County, Illinois | 31 | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Will County, Illinois | 25 | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
| McHenry County, Illinois | 12 | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Lake County, Indiana | 11 | 31 |
| Porter County, Indiana | 5 | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
Cook has 70% of the offices and 82% of the jobs, with 10.9 employees per office against 3.5 in Lake County, Illinois (our calculations). The missing employee counts were published but flagged as high noise: the noise the Census Bureau adds for confidentiality moved them by 5% or more. The two Indiana counties fall under Indiana's licensing rules.
Who designs what
The Census Bureau classifies firms that both design and build, or that manage construction, in the construction sector, not in architecture. Pick the kind of firm before you pick a name:
| Your project | Usually led by | Chicago-area offices (CBP 2023) |
|---|---|---|
| New building, addition or change of use needing sealed drawings | Architecture firm (541310) | 842 |
| Structural, mechanical, electrical or civil design | Engineering firm (541330) | 1,434 |
| Interior fit-out, finishes and furniture | Interior design firm (541410) | 667 |
| One contract to design and build | Design-build contractor (236220 and other construction codes) | 1,011 commercial builders |
| Parks, campuses, streetscapes | Landscape architect (541320) | 148 |
IDFPR separately registers 598 interior designers; that title doesn't let them offer architecture.
Illinois registers the firm as well as the architect
The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) licenses architects and registers the firms that offer their services. Its application instructions are blunt: any organization practicing or offering architecture in Illinois must register as a Professional Design Firm, and failing to do so violates state law. For a client, three rules matter:
- At least one director, member or partner must be an Illinois-licensed architect who serves as the firm's managing agent, works there full time and is in responsible control of its architecture.
- A plain LLC can't register. A firm organized that way must be a professional LLC (PLLC).
- A licensed sole proprietor working in their own name without licensed staff needs no firm registration, but one trading under an assumed name does.
IDFPR's Active License Report for 1 October 2026 counts 9,060 licensed architects and 1,704 design firms registered for architecture: 1,456 for architecture alone and 248 that combine it with engineering or land surveying (our sum). Registrations include out-of-state firms, so they don't line up with the Census count of local offices. Check the firm and the architect who will seal your drawings through the license lookup on IDFPR's architect page.
What the city's permit data shows
The City of Chicago publishes every building permit it issues, with the review track and the contacts on each one. Our count of permits issued in 2025:
| Permit type | Standard plan review | Self-certification | Developer services |
|---|---|---|---|
| New construction | 791 | 540 | 129 |
| Renovation or alteration | 2,845 | 2,491 | 169 |
On 2,707 of the self-certified permits, the first contact listed is a self-certifying architect, under 367 different names (individuals or firms, as entered). When you interview a firm, ask which track its recent Chicago permits went through and how long they took; the dataset lets you look up permits at addresses the firm names as references.
How to hire a Chicago architect
- Describe the project on one page: building type, rough area, budget, schedule and who signs off.
- Build a long list from AIA Chicago, the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects, from permits on comparable buildings, and from referrals. For state work, the Capital Development Board publishes a search of prequalified architects and engineers.
- Verify the firm and the architect in IDFPR's records.
- Interview three firms on qualifications: comparable projects, the people assigned, and permit experience in your city or suburb. Federal agencies work the same way under FAR subpart 36.6: rank the most qualified firms, then negotiate the fee with the top one.
- Use a standard contract. AIA's B101-2017 suits large projects and allows a percentage of construction cost or a stipulated sum; B105-2017 is the short form for small residential or commercial jobs.
Working at a Chicago firm
The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 4,460 architects in the metro in May 2025, with a mean wage of $93,260 and a median of $81,790, plus 1,040 architectural and civil drafters at a mean of $63,720. Those figures cover employees in every industry, not firm owners. NCARB counts 9,804 Illinois architect licenses in 2025, 58% held by Illinois residents.
Selling to Chicago architecture firms
Most of the market buys like a small business: 550 offices have fewer than five people, and a principal decides on the spot. The 76 offices with 20 to 99 employees have a studio or operations lead who evaluates tools and services, and the 11 largest add IT and procurement reviews. SEC records show no listed architecture company based in the metro, so every target is private.
Illustrative example. The company, prices and results are invented.
Lakefront Code Review (lakefrontcode.example) checks drawings for building code and accessibility issues before they're submitted. Its pitch is a second check before an architect certifies a permit, so it starts from the 367 names on 2025 self-certified permits, matches them to firms and keeps the 120 with three or more such permits. A note to each principal and a follow-up call book 15 conversations; six firms send a project at $2,500 each, $15,000 in first work. Matching names to firms and finding who decides is the slow part, and Bebop does that research for each account in the list.
Subject: A second check before you certify [project] Hi [first name], [Firm] certified [number] Chicago permits last year, including [project type]. Before you sign the next one, we can check the drawings against the Chicago Building Code and accessibility rules and return a marked-up set within five working days. Would a fixed-fee check on one current project help? If the timing's wrong, a one-line reply is fine. [Your name] [Company], [postal address]

Questions people ask
How many architecture firms are in Chicago?
The Census Bureau counted 842 architecture offices with paid employees in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro in 2023, employing 7,833 people. Cook County had 591, DuPage 100 and Lake County, Illinois 63. The count is of office locations, so a firm with two offices counts twice, and architects working alone without staff aren't included. Statewide, IDFPR lists 1,704 design firms registered to offer architecture.
How do I check if an architect is licensed in Illinois?
Use the license lookup linked from IDFPR's architect page. Search the architect who will seal your drawings and the firm itself, because Illinois requires any organization offering architecture to register as a Professional Design Firm with a licensed Illinois architect as its managing agent. A sole proprietor practicing in their own name without licensed staff is the only common exception.
Can an LLC offer architecture services in Illinois?
Not as a plain LLC. IDFPR's design firm instructions say the Secretary of State requires LLCs that provide licensed professional services to register as professional limited liability companies (PLLCs), and IDFPR doesn't accept an LLC for design firm registration. Corporations, partnerships, PLLCs, LLPs and sole proprietorships can register if an Illinois-licensed architect is a director, member or partner and serves as managing agent.
How much do architects make in Chicago?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median wage for architects in the Chicago metro at $81,790 in May 2025, with a mean of $93,260 and 4,460 employed. Architectural and civil drafters averaged $63,720. Census payroll data give a higher average of $100,853 per employee at architecture offices, because that figure includes every employee on the payroll, principals among them.
Is a design-build firm the same as an architecture firm?
No. The Census Bureau classifies firms that both design and construct buildings, or manage construction, in the construction sector, while architecture firms (NAICS 541310) plan and design. A design-build contractor gives you one contract for design and construction and usually hires an architect for the design. An architecture firm works for you and can help you select and oversee a contractor.
