Short answer
The Milwaukee-Waukesha metro had 89 architecture offices with paid employees in 2023, employing 1,467 people at an average of $100,538 a year, according to the Census Bureau. Milwaukee County had 57 of them and Waukesha County 23. 44 had fewer than five employees, 17 had 20 to 99 and two had 100 or more. Check the architect's Wisconsin license through the state's lookup, compare two or three firms on comparable buildings, and agree the scope in writing first.
- The Milwaukee metro had 89 architecture offices, 1,467 employees and $147.5 million in payroll in 2023.
- Offices average 16.5 employees, against 8.3 nationally; in Milwaukee County the average is 20.8.
- Both of the metro's offices with 100 or more employees are in Milwaukee County.
- AIA Wisconsin's Conference + Expo on Architecture is set for 21 to 22 April 2027 at Milwaukee's Baird Center.
- Federal agencies hiring architects must select on qualifications under FAR 36.6 and cap design fees at 6% of construction cost.

Milwaukee's architecture offices in Census data
County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023 counts establishments in NAICS 541310, Architectural Services, in the Milwaukee-Waukesha, WI Metro Area (CBSA 33340): Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee and Washington counties.
| Measure (2023) | Milwaukee metro | United States |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture offices | 89 | 22,805 |
| Employees | 1,467 | 189,468 |
| Annual payroll | $147,489,000 | $18,703,680,000 |
| Average employees per office | 16.5 | 8.3 |
| Average annual pay | $100,538 | $98,717 |
Milwaukee has 0.39% of the nation's architecture offices and 0.77% of their jobs (our calculation from the same release).
Fewer, larger offices
| Employees per office | Offices | Share |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 44 | 49.4% |
| 5 to 9 | 17 | 19.1% |
| 10 to 19 | 9 | 10.1% |
| 20 to 49 | 12 | 13.5% |
| 50 to 99 | 5 | 5.6% |
| 100 or more | 2 | 2.2% |
The Census Bureau doesn't publish the classes from 100 employees up here, so the last row is the total less the published classes. Fewer than half of Milwaukee's offices have one to four employees, against 63.6% nationally, and one in five has 20 or more.
| County | Offices | Employees | Average employees | Average annual pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee | 57 | 1,185 | 20.8 | $104,806 |
| Waukesha | 23 | 206 | 9.0 | $85,053 |
| Ozaukee | 5 | 71 | 14.2 | n/a |
| Washington | 4 | not reported (high-noise figure) | n/a | n/a |
Averages are our calculation. Washington County's employee count carries the Census Bureau's high-noise flag (confidentiality noise moved it by 5% or more), so it isn't shown. Milwaukee County holds all five offices with 50 to 99 employees and, by the same subtraction, both larger ones.
Limits. CBP counts establishments, not firms: a practice with offices in Milwaukee and Madison counts once in each metro, and sole practitioners without employees aren't counted. With fewer than 100 offices, small changes move the percentages.
Architects among engineers and builders
The same release counts 291 engineering offices, 132 commercial and institutional builders (a category that includes design-build firms), 43 interior design offices and 18 landscape architecture offices in the metro. An architecture firm plans and designs the building and prepares the documents a building official approves; a design-builder offers one contract for design and construction and is classed by the Census Bureau as construction; an engineering firm leads on structure, systems or civil work. Many firms in AIA Wisconsin's directory list architecture, engineering and interior design together, so ask which licensed professional leads your project.
Checking a Wisconsin architect
Wisconsin licenses architects through the Department of Safety and Professional Services. NCARB's architect lookup links to Wisconsin's license lookup, as it does for every state. Before you sign:
- Confirm the license of the architect who will seal your drawings, and its status.
- Ask the firm how it is registered to offer architecture in Wisconsin and who is in charge of the practice, then confirm with the department.
- See two comparable buildings, ideally ones you can visit, and call those owners.
- Agree the scope in writing, on a standard form such as AIA's B101-2017, with the construction contract on AIA's A201-2017 general conditions.
How public owners select
For federal work in Milwaukee, such as a federal building or a Veterans Affairs project, FAR 36.601-1 requires agencies to announce architect-engineer requirements publicly and negotiate on the basis of demonstrated competence and qualifications, at fair and reasonable prices. FAR 36.602-1 sets the criteria:
| FAR 36.602-1 criterion | What a private client can ask |
|---|---|
| Professional qualifications | Who is licensed, and in what? |
| Specialized experience and technical competence | Three buildings like yours |
| Capacity to do the work in the required time | Who is free when you start |
| Past performance with government and private clients | Owners you can call |
| Location and knowledge of the locality | Recent permits with your city or village |
FAR 15.404-4 limits the federal fee for designs, plans, drawings and specifications to 6% of the estimated construction cost. Private fees are negotiated, but the federal method, qualifications first and fee second, works for any owner.
AIA Wisconsin, AIA Milwaukee and jobs
AIA Wisconsin has four local sections, of which AIA Milwaukee is one. Its firm directory can be filtered by building type and by region, including Southeast Wisconsin. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2025 estimates for the metro:
| Occupation | Employed | Mean annual wage | Median annual wage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architects (17-1011) | 500 | $102,020 | $99,680 |
| Architectural and civil drafters (17-3011) | 730 | $69,400 | $61,960 |
| Interior designers (27-1025) | 420 | $75,700 | $64,550 |
| Landscape architects (17-1012) | 130 | $72,920 | $64,330 |
Drafters outnumber architects here and are 1.33 times as concentrated as nationally; architects are at 0.88. SEC records show no listed architecture company based in the metro.
Selling to Milwaukee architecture firms
Milwaukee is a market you can cover completely. The 45 offices with five or more employees are the core; most of the 20-plus offices are in Milwaukee County. The annual AIA Wisconsin Conference + Expo on Architecture brings the state's architects to the Baird Center in Milwaukee on 21 and 22 April 2027, with 30 to 40 continuing education programs, and exhibit booth sales begin in late fall 2026.
Illustrative example. The company, costs and results are invented.
Cream City Acoustics (creamcityacoustics.example) represents acoustic panel and ceiling manufacturers. It plans an expo booth and, beforehand, researches the 45 Milwaukee-area offices with five or more employees, sorting them by the building types in AIA Wisconsin's directory: schools, healthcare and offices. It invites 30 project architects to the booth and a lunch session, meets 18 at the show, and is specified on five projects over the year. A booth that produces five specifications is cheap pipeline. Working out which firms have which building types in design is the slow part, and Bebop researches each account in a list.
Subject: The [ceiling or panel system] details from our booth Hi [first name], Thanks for stopping by at the AIA Wisconsin expo. As promised, here are the details and acoustic data for [product] in [school or office] spaces like the ones on [project]. Questions people ask
How many architecture firms are there in Milwaukee?
The Census Bureau counted 89 architecture offices with paid employees in the Milwaukee-Waukesha metro in 2023, employing 1,467 people. Milwaukee County had 57, Waukesha 23, Ozaukee five and Washington four. They are larger than average, at 16.5 employees each against 8.3 nationally. The count is of locations with payroll, so architects working alone without employees aren't included.
How do I check if an architect is licensed in Wisconsin?
Wisconsin licenses architects through the Department of Safety and Professional Services, which runs the state's license lookup. NCARB's architect lookup page links to it and to every other state's roster. Check the license of the architect who will seal your drawings, ask the firm how it is registered to offer architecture in Wisconsin, and confirm that with the department.
How do federal agencies choose an architect?
By qualifications, then price. FAR 36.601-1 requires agencies to announce architect-engineer requirements publicly and negotiate contracts on the basis of demonstrated competence and qualifications, at fair and reasonable prices. FAR 36.602-1 lists the criteria: professional qualifications, specialized experience, capacity, past performance and knowledge of the locality. FAR 15.404-4 caps the design fee at 6% of estimated construction cost.
How much do architects make in Milwaukee?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics put the mean annual wage for architects in the Milwaukee-Waukesha metro at $102,020 in May 2025, with a median of $99,680 and 500 employed.
