Short answer
The Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro had 274 architecture offices with paid employees in 2023, employing 2,986 people at an average of $88,108 a year, according to the Census Bureau. Multnomah County had 194 of them and 86.6% of the jobs. 180 had fewer than five employees. The Portland market in Census figures
County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023 counts establishments in NAICS 541310, Architectural Services, in the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA Metro Area (CBSA 38900).
| Measure (2023) | Portland metro |
|---|---|
| Architecture offices | 274 |
| Employees | 2,986 |
| Annual payroll | $263,091,000 |
| Average employees per office | 10.9 |
| Average annual pay | $88,108 |
| Share of US architecture offices | 1.20% |
Average pay across all staff in Portland's architecture offices is about 11% below the industry's national figure of $98,717 (our calculation), even though, as the wage table below shows, architects themselves earn close to the national mean.
Five counties, two states
| County | Offices | Employees | Average annual pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multnomah, OR | 194 | 2,585 | $87,866 |
| Washington, OR | 29 | 168 | $108,625 |
| Clackamas, OR | 24 | 59 | n/a |
| Clark, WA | 20 | 150 | $80,373 |
| Yamhill, OR | 7 | not reported (high-noise figure) | n/a |
Pay averages are our calculation for counties with more than 100 employees. Yamhill's employee count carries the Census Bureau's high-noise flag (confidentiality noise changed it by 5% or more), so it isn't shown.
By size, 180 metro offices have one to four employees, 31 have five to nine, 30 have 10 to 19, 21 have 20 to 49, eight have 50 to 99 and three have 100 to 249. One more has 250 or more: the Census Bureau doesn't publish the classes above 250, so that is the total less the published classes. The county detail puts all eight 50-to-99 offices, the three 100-to-249 offices and, by the same subtraction, the largest one in Multnomah County.
CBP counts establishments with paid staff, not firms, and leaves out sole practitioners without employees.
Oregon registers the firm, and polices its name
The Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners (OSBAE) licenses individual architects and also requires firm registration:
- Any corporation, LLC, partnership or assumed business name providing architectural services in Oregon must register with OSBAE, including engineering firms that employ architects and offer architectural services.
- The practice must be managed and directed by one or more architects registered in Oregon, and the firm's representative must be an officer, a voting member or an owner.
- A firm may use the plural "architects" in its name only if more than one architect is actively registered, and a name such as "Three Oregon Architects" must mean three architects registered in Oregon.
To check a firm or an architect, use OSBAE's Architect/Firm Search. Its FAQ notes that results can be sent to Excel at no charge, which makes the registry a free list of the state's registered firms. For the 20 offices in Clark County, Washington, the Washington rules apply: every business entity offering architecture there needs a certificate of authorization from the state.
The construction-phase rule clients should know
OSBAE's FAQ is explicit: for all non-exempt Oregon projects, construction-phase services must be performed by an architect or under an architect's responsible control. At a minimum that means clarifying and modifying the technical submissions during construction and observing the site through substantial completion. If the architect of record won't provide those services, the board and the building jurisdiction must be told on its observation change notification form.
For a client, that settles a common fee argument. A proposal that leaves out construction administration to look cheaper isn't a complete option on a non-exempt project; compare proposals with it included. ORS 671.030 lists the activities that aren't the practice of architecture, so ask the building department or the board whether your project is exempt.
Picking a Portland architect
- Describe the project: use, size, site, budget and schedule.
- Shortlist three to five firms from built work you've seen and AIA Oregon's Find an Architect directory.
- Run each through the Architect/Firm Search and note who will be the architect of record.
- Ask how construction-phase services are staffed and how often someone will be on site.
- Contract on a standard form, such as AIA's B101-2017, with B201-2017 if you want the architect's design and construction administration services spelled out separately.
AIA Oregon and the job market
AIA Oregon, established in 2019 to unify the state's sections, runs a Portland Section covering Clackamas, Multnomah, Washington, Yamhill and six other counties. In 2022 it closed its Portland and Eugene Centers for Architecture, which it says saves $120,000 a year. It also runs a job board. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2025 metro estimates:
| Occupation | Employed | Mean annual wage | Location quotient |
|---|---|---|---|
| Architects (17-1011) | 1,700 | $105,000 | 2.05 |
| Architectural and civil drafters (17-3011) | 1,180 | $76,760 | 1.47 |
| Interior designers (27-1025) | 760 | $78,510 | 1.37 |
| Landscape architects (17-1012) | 250 | $81,440 | 1.65 |
The architects' median is $100,490, against $99,280 nationally. The metro also has 605 engineering offices, 299 commercial and institutional builders (including design-build firms) and 158 interior design offices in CBP. SEC records show no listed architecture company based in the metro.
Selling to Portland architecture firms
The 241 offices with fewer than 20 employees are principal-run: one person decides. The 29 with 20 to 99 split decisions between a managing principal and an operations or studio lead. The four with 100 or more are all in Multnomah County. Because Oregon requires construction-phase services on non-exempt projects, a small office that wins a larger job may need construction administration help.
Illustrative example. The company, rates and results are invented.
Cascade CA Partners (cascadeca.example) supplies Oregon-registered architects on contract to run construction administration for small firms, under the hiring firm's responsible control. It targets Multnomah offices with five to 19 employees, 48 by the county detail, exports their registrations from the OSBAE search to confirm each is a registered firm, and calls the principals. Eight conversations lead to two retainers of 20 hours a month at $140 an hour, about $67,000 a year. Knowing which firms just won a bigger project is what makes the call timely; Bebop researches each account and surfaces signals like that.
Hi [first name], this is [your name] at [company]. Congratulations on [project]. When small studios take on a job that size, construction administration is often what stretches the team. We provide Oregon-registered architects who run CA under your responsible control, by the hour. I'll send a short note with two references; my number is [number].

Questions people ask
How many architecture firms are there in Portland?
The Census Bureau counted 274 architecture offices with paid employees in the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro metro in 2023, employing 2,986 people. Multnomah County had 194, Washington County 29, Clackamas 24 and Clark County, Washington, 20. Office locations are counted, not companies, and architects working alone without employees aren't included. Two in three offices had fewer than five employees.
Does an architecture firm need to register in Oregon?
Yes. The Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners requires any corporation, LLC, partnership or assumed business name that provides architectural services in Oregon to register as a firm, including engineering firms that employ architects. The practice must be managed and directed by architects registered in Oregon, and firm names must not overstate how many architects the firm has.
Does my architect have to visit the site during construction in Oregon?
On non-exempt projects, yes. The Oregon board's FAQ says construction-phase services must be performed by an architect or under an architect's responsible control, including clarifying and modifying the technical submissions and observing the site through substantial completion. If the architect of record won't provide those services, the board and the building jurisdiction must be notified on an observation change form.
How do I look up an architect in Oregon?
Use the Architect/Firm Search on the Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners website, which covers individual registrants and registered firms and shows discipline. The board's FAQ notes that search results can be sent to Excel at no charge. For a firm based in Clark County, Washington, also check Washington's Department of Licensing, since Washington licenses architecture firms too.
