What kinds of companies Chicago has
| Sector (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees | Average pay |
|---|---|---|---|
| Professional, scientific and technical services (54) | 32,828 | 409,424 | $125,198 |
| Health care and social assistance (62) | 29,768 | 642,081 | $62,481 |
| Retail trade (44 to 45) | 25,308 | 421,424 | $38,631 |
| Construction (23) | 22,707 | 180,543 | $94,042 |
| Accommodation and food services (72) | 22,059 | 407,576 | $29,074 |
| Transportation and warehousing (48 to 49) | 17,514 | 284,408 | $60,332 |
| Finance and insurance (52) | 13,997 | 278,545 | $146,549 |
| Wholesale trade (42) | 12,261 | 253,713 | $103,938 |
| Manufacturing (31 to 33) | 9,298 | 370,871 | $75,730 |
| Management of companies (55) | 1,601 | 174,948 | $137,373 |
Average pay is our calculation from CBP payroll. Two lines stand out. Manufacturing sites average 39.9 employees each, more than twice the metro average, so a modest number of plants employ 370,871 people. And the 1,601 corporate, subsidiary and regional managing offices in NAICS 55 average 109 employees each, a sign of how many large head offices the region has. For two industries in detail, see construction companies in Chicago and trucking companies in Chicago.
CBP counts establishments rather than companies, so a bank's 50 branches count 50 times. It excludes the self-employed and businesses without employees, and employment is for the pay period including March 12, 2023.
The biggest headquarters: city and suburbs
World Business Chicago, the city's economic development organization, counts 30 Fortune 500 companies in the region. These are the 20 largest SEC-registered public companies in the metro by revenue in their latest 10-K, split by where the 10-K cover puts the principal executive office:

The city's headquarters lean to food, airlines, real estate services and utilities; the suburbs to pharmaceuticals, medical products and distribution. Finding and checking Chicago companies
| Source | What it's good for |
|---|---|
| City of Chicago Business Licenses dataset | Every license issued by the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection since 2002, with legal name, address, ward, community area, business activity and expiration date |
| Illinois Secretary of State business entity search | Whether a corporation or LLC exists in Illinois and is in good standing, with its registered agent |
| Cook County government | County permits, property records and procurement for suburban Cook |
| World Business Chicago | The region's economic data, industry reports and headquarters statistics |
| Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce | Member companies, events and business advocacy |
| SEC EDGAR company search | 10-Ks for Illinois public companies, with revenue, segments and headcount |
The license dataset is the most useful free list most people don't know about. Filter it by community area and business activity, keep only licenses that haven't expired, and you have a list of operating businesses in, say, West Loop restaurants or Pilsen auto repair shops, with addresses. It covers only businesses licensed by the city, so suburban companies need the Illinois or Indiana state records instead.
To vet a supplier, confirm the entity with the Secretary of State, check the city license (or the suburb's) if the work needs one, and ask for references from companies your size.
Prospecting Chicago companies
Chicago's mix of large head offices and dense logistics makes two very different markets. At the head offices, buying for many sites happens centrally and goes through procurement. In the distribution corridors of Will, DuPage and Cook counties, most warehouses and trucking firms are mid-sized and owner- or general-manager-led: in the metro, 29,422 establishments have 20 to 99 employees.
Illustrative example. The company, rates and results are fictional, to show the method.
Prairie Freight Audit (prairiefreight.example) checks carrier invoices for shippers and wants warehouses and distributors in Will County.
- Metro transportation and warehousing establishments: 17,514.
- Will County has 6.9% of all metro establishments, so Prairie starts from about 1,200, knowing the real share is probably higher in this sector.
- It adds wholesale distributors, which ship heavily, and drops couriers and transit operators that don't buy freight.
- It targets the logistics or transportation manager at sites with 50 or more employees, where freight spend is large enough to audit.
Finding which of those sites are warehouses that ship, not offices or terminals, takes account-by-account research. Bebop can search for "Will County distribution centers with 50 to 500 employees that opened or expanded since 2025" and explain why each fits.
Subject: [Company]'s carrier invoices Hi [first name], Sites shipping the volume [Company] does out of [Joliet / Bolingbrook] usually overpay on a few percent of carrier invoices, mostly on accessorial charges and duplicate billing. We audit freight invoices for Will County shippers and keep a share of what we recover, so there's no cost if we find nothing. Could I run last quarter's invoices for you as a test? [Your name], Prairie Freight Audit
Next step: build the list itself with how to build a prospect list.

Questions people ask
How many businesses are there in Chicago?
The Census Bureau counted 248,519 business establishments with paid employees in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro area in 2023, with 4,285,971 employees and $331.9 billion in annual payroll. Cook County, which includes the city, had 134,513. These are locations, not companies, and the count leaves out the self-employed, so the number of registered businesses is far higher.
What are the biggest companies in Chicago?
By revenue in their latest 10-K filings, the largest public companies headquartered in the city of Chicago are Archer-Daniels-Midland ($80.3 billion in 2025), United Airlines ($59.1 billion), Mondelez ($38.5 billion), McDonald's ($26.9 billion) and Jones Lang LaSalle ($26.1 billion). In the suburbs, Allstate (7.7 billion) and AbbVie (1.2 billion) are larger than every city headquarters except ADM.
How many Fortune 500 companies are in Chicago?
World Business Chicago counts 30 Fortune 500 companies in the Chicago region. About half of the biggest are in the suburbs rather than the city: of the 20 largest public companies by revenue in SEC filings, 10 have principal executive offices in Chicago and 10 in suburbs such as Northbrook, North Chicago, Abbott Park, Rosemont and Lake Forest.
How do I look up a business in Chicago?
For businesses licensed by the city, search the City of Chicago's Business Licenses dataset on its open data portal, which lists every license issued since 2002 with the legal name, address and business activity. For the legal entity, use the Illinois Secretary of State's business entity search. Public companies' annual reports are on SEC EDGAR.
Why do some Chicago companies have suburban addresses?
Many large companies based in the Chicago area put their headquarters in suburban office campuses rather than downtown. In their latest 10-Ks, Allstate gives Northbrook, AbbVie North Chicago, Abbott its own Abbott Park campus, Medline Northfield and Grainger Lake Forest. Census figures for the Chicago metro include these suburbs and parts of northwest Indiana.
