The biggest companies in Chicago: the top 30 headquarters by revenue

Chicago's list of giants has changed more in the last few years than its reputation suggests: Boeing and Caterpillar moved their headquarters out of state, Walgreens delisted, and Medline listed its shares in December 2025. A ranking built from this year's filings looks different from the ones still circulating.

The biggest companies headquartered in the Chicago metro, by revenue in their latest 10-K filings, are Archer-Daniels-Midland ($80.3 billion in 2025), Allstate ($67.7 billion), AbbVie ($61.2 billion), United Airlines ($59.1 billion) and Abbott Laboratories ($44.3 billion). The top 30 below reported $717 billion in combined revenue. World Business Chicago counts 30 Fortune 500 companies in the region; Walgreens, Boeing and Caterpillar, often still listed, no longer file as Chicago-area companies.

  • ADM is the largest Chicago company by revenue: $80.3 billion in 2025, with 41,496 employees.
  • Food and agriculture companies account for $203.6 billion of the top 30's $717 billion in revenue.
  • McDonald's (over 150,000), Abbott (about 115,000), United (about 113,200) and JLL (more than 113,000) report the biggest workforces.
  • 14 of the 30 are in the city of Chicago and 15 in Illinois suburbs from Northbrook to Bolingbrook; NiSource is in Merrillville, Indiana.
  • Walgreens filed to delist in August 2025 and deregistered in September 2025, so it no longer publishes results.

Headcounts are company-wide. McDonald's figure covers the company and the restaurants its subsidiaries operate, not franchisees' staff. Hyatt says about 242,000 people work at its offices and hotels, of whom it directly employs about 50,000. US Foods' fiscal year ended December 27, 2025.

Who isn't on the list, and why

Older lists of Chicago's biggest companies still include names whose filings now say otherwise:

CompanyWhat its SEC record shows
Walgreens Boots Alliance (Deerfield)Filed to delist (Form 25) on 28 August 2025 and to deregister (Form 15) on 8 September 2025; its last 10-K covers the year to August 2024
BoeingBusiness address in Arlington, Virginia
CaterpillarBusiness address in Irving, Texas
Kraft Heinz10-K cover names One PPG Place, Pittsburgh as its principal executive office

Private companies are also missing, because they don't publish revenue. And Northern Trust and Old Republic show how revenue definitions differ by industry: banks report total revenue after interest expense, and insurers' revenue includes investment income as well as premiums.

Fortune 500 companies in Chicago

World Business Chicago counts 30 Fortune 500 companies in the region. Fortune ranks by revenue too, so its list and this one broadly agree, but Fortune applies its own revenue definitions and fiscal-year cutoffs, so ranks and the exact membership can differ. Use Fortune's site for its ranks and this table for figures you can trace to a filing.

What the top 30 look like

GroupCompaniesCombined revenue
Food and agricultureADM, US Foods, Mondelez, McDonald's, Conagra, Ingredion$203.6 billion
Health care productsAbbVie, Abbott, Medline, GE HealthCare, Baxter$165.8 billion
Insurance and financeAllstate, CNA, Gallagher, Old Republic, Northern Trust, CME$120.4 billion
IndustrialGrainger, ITW, Packaging Corp, Dover, CF Industries$58.2 billion

The rest are an airline (United), utilities (Exelon, NiSource), real estate services (JLL), technology distribution and equipment (CDW, Motorola Solutions), retail (Ulta) and hotels (Hyatt). Food and health care alone are more than half the total, which makes the Chicago list unusually dependent on consumer staples compared with tech-heavy lists in Austin or the Bay Area.

Selling to Chicago's biggest companies

Companies this size buy through procurement. Expect a supplier portal, a security and compliance review, insurance certificates, and payment terms set by the buyer. Large companies often publish supplier codes of conduct and supplier diversity programs, which tell you what they'll ask for before you're asked. The 10-K helps you aim: segments name the business units that hold separate budgets, and the fiscal year tells you when next year's budget is set (Conagra's year ends in May, Ulta's in January, most others in December).

Illustrative example. The seller and its figures are fictional; the company figures are from the table.

Lakeshore Safety (lakeshoresafety.example) delivers on-site safety training priced per plant and wants manufacturers and distributors among the top 30.

  • From the table it picks seven: ADM, Mondelez, ITW, Dover, Packaging Corp, Ingredion and Conagra.
  • Their combined headcount is about 245,000, so even if only a tenth work at North American plants and depots, that's roughly 24,500 people.
  • At $3,000 per plant per year and an assumed 20 plants won across the seven, the opportunity is about $60,000 a year, small for them and meaningful for Lakeshore.
  • Because plants buy within corporate safety standards, it starts with the environmental, health and safety lead at headquarters, then each plant manager.

Bebop can find the EHS leaders and plant managers at each of the seven and draft outreach that references the company's own safety goals.

Subject: Plant safety training across [Company]'s sites

Hi [first name],

Your 10-K describes [number] manufacturing sites and a goal to [reduce recordable incidents]. Delivering the same training consistently across that many plants is usually the hard part.

We run on-site safety training for Midwest plants on one contract, scheduled around shifts, with records your team can audit. Would a sample curriculum for two of your Illinois sites be useful?

[Your name], Lakeshore Safety

Questions people ask

What is the biggest company in Chicago?

By revenue, Archer-Daniels-Midland is the biggest company headquartered in Chicago: $80.3 billion in 2025, according to its 10-K, with 41,496 employees. Allstate, based in suburban Northbrook, is second with $67.7 billion, and AbbVie in North Chicago third with $61.2 billion. By headcount, McDonald's, Abbott and United Airlines each report more than 100,000 employees.

How many Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in Chicago?

World Business Chicago counts 30 Fortune 500 companies in the Chicago region. Fortune ranks companies by revenue, and the largest Chicago-area companies by revenue in their latest 10-Ks are ADM, Allstate, AbbVie, United Airlines and Abbott Laboratories. Fortune uses its own revenue definitions and fiscal-year timing, so check its site for exact ranks.

Is Walgreens still headquartered in Chicago?

Walgreens Boots Alliance's SEC record still shows a Deerfield, Illinois address, but the company filed to delist its shares in August 2025 and to deregister with the SEC in September 2025. It no longer files annual reports, so it has no current public revenue figure and isn't in this ranking. Its last 10-K covered the fiscal year to August 2024.

Did Boeing and Caterpillar leave Chicago?

Both now give headquarters addresses outside Illinois in their SEC records: Boeing in Arlington, Virginia and Caterpillar in Irving, Texas. Neither counts as a Chicago-area headquarters in a ranking built from current filings, though older lists and some directories still show them. When a list and a filing disagree, the address on the company's latest 10-K cover is the one to use.

Which Chicago companies have the most employees?

From their latest 10-Ks, McDonald's reports over 150,000 people at the company and its company-operated restaurants, Abbott about 115,000, JLL more than 113,000 and United Airlines about 113,200. Mondelez reports about 91,000. These are worldwide totals; the filings don't break out Chicago-area employment. For local headcount, company announcements and state or regional employer lists are the better sources, because 10-Ks rarely report employees by state.
