|---|---|---|
| Establishments with paid employees, 2023 | 670,878 | Census Bureau, County Business Patterns |

| Active franchise taxpayers | 3,494,999 | Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts open data, updated 24 October 2026 |
The Census figure counts locations with a payroll; the Comptroller's counts legal entities set up for the state franchise tax, including holding companies, single-owner LLCs and out-of-state companies registered in Texas, so it's five times larger. For sizing a market, use the Census figure. For building a list of names, use the Comptroller's file.
