This page is for anyone who needs to count, find or check businesses in Utah: buyers vetting a contractor, job seekers, researchers and B2B sellers planning a territory. It covers how many businesses there are and how big they are, which industries stand out, the largest public companies headquartered in the state, and the official places to check a business.
How many businesses are in Utah
The Census Bureau's County Business Patterns (CBP) counts business locations with paid employees. For Utah in 2023:
| Measure | Utah, 2023 |
|---|---|
| Establishments | 95,494 |
| Employees | 1,579,974 |
| Annual payroll | $96,402,957,000 |
| Average employees per establishment | 16.5 |
| Average annual pay | $61,016 |
| Share of US establishments | 1.14% (of 8,361,342) |
| Rank among states by establishments | 28th |
| Employees at the establishment | Establishments |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 56,103 |
| 5 to 9 | 14,564 |
| 10 to 19 | 11,679 |
| 20 to 49 | 8,220 |
| 50 to 99 | 2,691 |
| 100 to 249 | 1,488 |
| 250 to 499 | 456 |
| 500 to 999 | 183 |
| 1,000 or more | 110 |
That's 82,346 locations with 1 to 19 employees, 10,911 with 20 to 99 and 2,237 with 100 or more. Almost three in five (58.8%) have fewer than five employees.
CBP counts establishments, not companies, and leaves out the self-employed, businesses without payroll and government. Employment is for the pay period including March 12, 2023. Utah has many more registered business entities than this, because registrations include sole proprietors, holding companies and inactive firms.
Counting government too, the BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages found 1,741,066 covered jobs in Utah in 2025: 1,473,262 private (84.6%), 143,835 in local government, 83,732 state and 40,236 federal. Government's 267,803 jobs are 15.4% of the total, a larger share than in Indiana (12.5%) or New Jersey (13.5%).

Average pay is our calculation: payroll divided by employees. Administrative and support services is Utah's largest sector by employment, which is rare: it includes call centers, staffing agencies, building services and back-office operations. Of its 5,527 sites, 34 have 1,000 or more employees and 25 more have 500 to 999. Construction has the second-most establishments (13,022), after professional services (13,540). The information sector (software, data processing and telecoms) pays $118,485 on average. For sector detail, see the reports on Utah tech companies and Utah construction companies.
The biggest companies headquartered in Utah
Ranked by revenue in each company's latest annual report on Form 10-K, using the headquarters on the filing's cover. Zions is shown at total revenue: net interest income plus noninterest income.
| Rank | Company | Headquarters | Revenue | Fiscal year ended | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | PACS Group | Salt Lake City | $5.29 billion | Dec 2025 | Skilled nursing and senior care |
| 2 | SkyWest | St. George | $4.06 billion | Dec 2025 | Regional airline |
| 3 | Zions Bancorporation | Salt Lake City | $3.39 billion | Dec 2025 | Banking |
| 4 | Extra Space Storage | Salt Lake City | $3.38 billion | Dec 2025 | Self-storage |
| 5 | Pattern Group | Lehi | $2.50 billion | Dec 2025 | Marketplace e-commerce |
| 6 | PROG Holdings | Draper | $2.41 billion | Dec 2025 | Lease-to-own financing |
| 7 | Green Dot | Provo | $2.08 billion | Dec 2025 | Banking and payments |
| 8 | Merit Medical Systems | South Jordan | $1.52 billion | Dec 2025 | Medical devices |
| 9 | Nu Skin Enterprises | Provo | $1.49 billion | Dec 2025 | Personal care and supplements |
| 10 | HealthEquity | Draper | $1.31 billion | Jan 2026 | Health savings accounts |
These are mid-sized companies: Utah has no headquarters with $10 billion in revenue once Autoliv is set aside. Autoliv's SEC record still lists Ogden, where it has US operations, but its 10-K gives Stockholm, Sweden as its principal executive office. PACS Group reports 47,455 employees across 321 facilities in 17 states, making it the largest Utah-headquartered employer among public companies by headcount.
Two familiar Utah names now file under new ones: the company once called Overstock.com, and later Beyond, now files as Neighborhood Intelligence (Murray, $1.04 billion in 2025), and Domo now files as Huckleberry.ai (American Fork). Green Dot's May 2026 proxy asked shareholders to approve a merger agreement with CommerceOne, so its listing may not last.
How to check a Utah business
| Source | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Utah.gov business portal | The state's starting point for registering and running a business |
| DOPL License Lookup and Verification | Licenses issued by the Division of Professional Licensing, including contractors |
| Salt Lake Chamber | Member businesses and the statewide Utah Chamber network |
| Economic Development Corporation of Utah | Industry profiles and expansion news |
| SEC EDGAR, Utah filers | Annual reports for public companies |
Utah licenses construction contractors at the state level through the Division of Professional Licensing, so a contractor's license number should come up in the DOPL lookup. Check the business entity's registration and status with the Division of Corporations too, and ask for references from clients your size.
Prospecting Utah businesses
At the 82,346 locations with fewer than 20 employees, the owner decides. At the 10,911 with 20 to 99, an office or operations manager runs most purchases. Utah's distinctive targets sit at the top: the 107 administrative and support sites with 250 or more employees, many of them contact centers and back offices that buy software, staffing and facilities services at scale.
Illustrative example. The company, prices and results are fictional, to show the method.
Wasatch Quality Labs (wasatchqa.example) sells software that scores customer service calls and coaches agents.
- Utah administrative and support sites with 250 or more employees: 48 + 25 + 34 = 107.
- It assumes 40% are contact centers or customer service operations: about 43 sites.
- At an average of 400 agent seats and $45 per seat per month, each site is worth about $216,000 a year.
- Winning four sites in a year adds about $864,000 in annual revenue.
The buyer is usually the director of customer experience or the site's workforce manager, with IT and security reviewing the integration. Separating contact centers from staffing offices and building-services firms in the 107 is the slow part; Bebop can search for "Utah contact centers with 250 or more agents that are hiring team leads" and explain why each fits.
Subject: Scoring every call at [Company]'s [city] center Hi [first name], Most centers your size review 2% of calls by hand, so coaching depends on which calls a team lead happens to pick. We score every call for 11 Wasatch Front contact centers and show each team lead the three calls worth coaching this week. Could I show you what that looks like on a sample of your own calls? [Your name], Wasatch Quality Labs
Next step: turn these counts into a target list with how to build a prospect list.
