Consulting firms in Atlanta: 6,216 offices, and 84% of them have fewer than five people

Atlanta has nearly as many consulting offices as New York City, but they're much smaller: 7.4 employees on average. That makes it a market of independent specialists around a handful of big-firm offices, and IT consulting employs more people here than general management consulting does.

The Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metro area had 6,216 management, scientific and technical consulting offices with paid staff in 2023, employing 46,004 people at an average of $128,481 a year, according to the Census Bureau's County Business Patterns. Most are tiny: 5,251 have one to four employees, and the average office has 7.4. Fulton County holds 2,214 offices and 25,387 of the jobs. Bain, BCG, Booz Allen, Deloitte and KPMG list Atlanta offices.

  • 6,216 consulting offices in the metro, 2.75% of the US total, with $5.91 billion of payroll in 2023.
  • Only 66 offices have 100 or more employees; 5,886 have fewer than 20.
  • IT consulting offices employ 35,120 people, more than general management consulting's 25,558.

  • No SEC-listed consulting firm is headquartered in the metro.

This report is for job seekers and students looking at Atlanta consulting, companies and public bodies shortlisting a consultant, and vendors that sell to consulting firms. It covers the Census count by size, county and kind of work, the big firms' Atlanta offices, federal work, pay, how to shortlist and how small firms buy.

A market of small practices

County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023 counts 6,216 establishments in NAICS 5416, Management, Scientific, and Technical Consulting Services, in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell, GA metro area, with 46,004 employees and $5.91 billion of payroll.

For comparison, 81% of Chicago's consulting offices and 71% of Washington's have one to four employees. CBP counts offices with paid employees, not firms, and leaves out solo consultants with no staff, so the number of independent consultants in Atlanta is higher still.

Two things stand out. IT consulting offices employ 35,120 people, more than any consulting code inside 5416. And marketing consultancies are 27% of Atlanta's consulting offices, against 23% nationally. General management offices paid $148,657 per employee on average (our calculation from CBP payroll). The NAICS code for consulting explains which code fits which kind of firm.

Where the large offices are

As listed on each firm's own website on 30 October 2026:

FirmAtlanta officeWhat the firm says
KPMG303 Peachtree Street NE (downtown) and 1201 West Peachtree Street NW (Midtown)Opened in 1922; about 1,600 partners and professionals, including 185 partners and managing directors
Deloitte1230 Peachtree Street NE; also 1000 Abernathy Road NEListed on its US office locator
BCG1075 Peachtree Street NE, plus BrightHouse at Ponce City MarketFounded in 1995, in Midtown
Bain1180 Peachtree Street NEListed on its offices page
Booz Allen575 Morosgo Drive NEListed on its locations page

Accenture is missing too: its 10-K names Boston, Chicago and New York, not Atlanta, among its major US offices, and its office locator showed us no addresses. McKinsey, EY and PwC aren't in the table because their sites didn't let us confirm an address (a timeout, script-only addresses and a block on automated access). SEC EDGAR lists no exchange-listed company in the management consulting codes (SIC 8742 to 8748) with a head office in the metro. Revenue rankings for the big firms are in the largest consulting firms, and the audit firms' consulting arms in the Big Four accounting firms.

Federal work: the CDC effect

USAspending.gov shows $157.7 million of federal contract obligations in fiscal 2025 for NAICS 5416 work performed in the metro, down from $256.5 million in fiscal 2024; reported fiscal 2026 obligations had reached $228.2 million. Health and Human Services obligated $105.5 million, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ($61.9 million) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services ($20.3 million). The largest recipients were Examination Resources ($18.6 million), Leidos ($17.0 million), Goldbelt Professional Services ($10.3 million) and Synensys ($10.0 million). IT consulting (541512) performed in the metro drew more, $414.0 million.

Pay

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 26,870 management analysts (occupation 13-1111) in the metro in May 2025, 1.61 times the national concentration, with a median wage of $101,220 and a mean of $110,990; the 10th percentile earned $62,870 and the 90th $171,130. The occupation covers every industry. For students, the arithmetic of the size table matters: only 140 offices have 50 or more staff, so entry-level openings at established firms are concentrated in a small number of offices, including the large firms above and the IT consultancies.

How to shortlist an Atlanta consultant

  1. Decide whether you want a firm or an individual. With 5,251 offices of one to four people, many good options are specialists working alone or in pairs. That suits a defined problem; a multi-site transformation needs a firm with a bench.
  2. Ask for comparable work. Two references from clients your size, and the name of the person who will do the work.
  3. Check the registration. The Georgia Secretary of State's Corporations Division search blocked our automated check, so search it directly for the firm's legal name and status.
  4. For public-health or federal projects, look the firm up on USAspending.gov to see its federal awards by agency. Georgia's own solicitations are posted on the Georgia Procurement Registry.
  5. Compare proposals on the same scope, with fixed fees and named deliverables, before you compare prices.

The Metro Atlanta Chamber and ACG Atlanta, listed in ACG's chapter directory, connect buyers with local firms.

Selling to Atlanta's small consultancies

General guidance: at the 5,655 offices with fewer than ten people, the owner buys everything, usually online and quickly; at the 495 with 10 to 99, an operations or finance lead appears; the 66 of 100 or more mostly buy through a national office.

Illustrative example. The company, prices and results are fictional.

Ledgerline (ledgerline.example) sells monthly bookkeeping and billing for consultancies at $450 a month and targets Atlanta offices with one to nine staff. If one in 20 of the 5,655 needs outside bookkeeping and Ledgerline wins a tenth of those, that's 28 clients, or 28 x $450 x 12 = $151,200 a year. The opener is short and practical: how long the firm waits to get paid after it invoices. Telling sole practitioners from small firms with staff, and finding the owner, is the research Bebop does across a list this long.

USAspending.gov shows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention obligated $61.9 million in fiscal 2025 for management, scientific and technical consulting performed in the Atlanta metro, the largest of any agency there.
