| Establishments | 9,677 |
| Employees (week of March 12) | 352,646 |
| Annual payroll | $118,827,010,000 |
| Average employees per establishment | 36.4 |
| Average annual pay | $336,958 |
| Share of US establishments | 2.06% of 469,382 |
| Borough (county) | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Manhattan (New York County) | 5,889 | 320,456 |
| Brooklyn (Kings County) | 1,546 | 13,330 |
| Queens (Queens County) | 1,414 | 12,684 |
| The Bronx (Bronx County) | 457 | 3,173 |
| Staten Island (Richmond County) | 371 | 3,003 |
Of the 9,677 establishments, 5,137 have 1 to 4 employees, 1,834 have 5 to 9, 1,133 have 10 to 19 and 718 have 20 to 49; the Census Bureau doesn't publish the larger classes for the five boroughs combined. Manhattan's own file is complete and shows the top end: 306 establishments with 50 to 99 employees, 258 with 100 to 249, 116 with 250 to 499, 66 with 500 to 999 and 51 with 1,000 or more.
The counts are establishments with paid employees, not companies: a bank with 40 branches counts 40 times, and an independent agent or adviser with no staff isn't counted. A company's head office can be classified as a management office rather than in finance.

Eight of the 49 are insured US branches of foreign banks, and 21 have less than $1 billion of assets. The SEC's October 2026 adviser data adds 1,921 registered investment advisers with a main office in the city; the largest by regulatory assets are J.P. Morgan Investment Management ($3,519.4 billion), Goldman Sachs Asset Management ($2,648.9 billion) and Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith ($1,781.6 billion).

Selling to New York financial firms
The buyer depends on size. In Manhattan's 51 establishments with 1,000 or more employees, purchases go through procurement, information security and third-party risk teams, and line-of-business owners sponsor them. In the thousands of small offices, an owner, branch manager or chief operating officer signs. Expect security review either way: firms that hold a DFS license, charter or registration fall under its cybersecurity regulation, 23 NYCRR Part 500, which requires them to maintain risk-based cybersecurity programs.
