The balance is more even than in most states. Carriers have 55% of the jobs, the three main lines are of similar size, and agencies pay almost as much as carriers. Title insurers (99 establishments) have an employee figure the Census Bureau flags as high-noise, so it isn't shown. Claims adjusting looks large by count (126 establishments, ninth in the US) but small by staff, about three per office.

Brighthouse reported more than 2.0 million annuity contracts and insurance policies in force at the end of 2025. James River said about 84.5% of its 2025 gross written premiums came from the excess and surplus lines market. These are small headcounts for the revenue, so the buyers at each are senior and few. Insurers based in the state that aren't publicly listed don't file with the SEC; for the national picture, see the largest insurance companies in the US.

Checking a company or agent

The North Carolina Department of Insurance (NC DOI) links two lookups from its home page, "Check Company License Status" and "Check Agent License Status", both on the state-based licensing system. Its "Assistance or File a Complaint" page is where to go with a claim dispute or a problem with an agent. For a company's complaint and financial record across states, use the NAIC's Consumer Insurance Search.

For people on Medicare, NC DOI runs the Seniors' Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP). Medicare open enrollment runs from 15 October to 7 December, and SHIIP is the department's program for helping beneficiaries compare plans.

Jobs in North Carolina insurance

The pay gap between carriers ($98,246) and agencies ($93,028) is small here, so agency work is a realistic career path, not only a starting job. The 96 establishments with 100 or more employees include the head offices above and large carrier operations; 3,775 of the 4,527 establishments with fewer than 20 employees are agencies and brokerages.

Prospecting North Carolina insurance businesses

Sell to agencies through their association first: the Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina, based in Cary, runs education, young-agent and agency-executive programs. For a map of the state's larger employers, the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina and the NC Chamber are the statewide sources.

Worked example: a marketing service for agencies

Illustrative example. The agency, prices and rates are invented; the counts are from the Census table above.

Blue Ridge Agency Marketing (blueridgeagencymarketing.example) runs review requests and local search listings for insurance agencies.

  1. Size the list. 3,914 agency establishments; assume 1,500 independent agencies with 3 or more staff are a fit.
  2. Do the arithmetic. An email sequence to 1,500 principals with a 3% reply rate gives 45 conversations. If 30% sign at $250 a month, 13 agencies bring $39,000 a year.
  3. Lean on referrals. Agencies talk to each other at association events, so the first five clients in a region shorten the next sale.

At 1,500 agencies, researching each one is the slow part; Bebop does it for each account and drafts the first email.
