Bank of America's and Truist's revenue is total revenue net of interest expense. Duke Energy's is total operating revenues. Brighthouse's total revenues include investment gains and losses, which can swing the figure from year to year. Shoe Carnival filed its latest 10-K under that name; the SEC now lists the company as Shoe Station Group. Headcounts are company-wide: Bank of America says 77% of its people are in the US.
How the list is built
We took SEC EDGAR records for listed companies in the 11 counties of the Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro, including York, Lancaster and Chester counties in South Carolina, and opened each company's latest 10-K to confirm the principal executive office on the cover and the revenue reported. Bank of America was missing from an address-based search because its Charlotte ZIP code, 28255, isn't in the Census Bureau's ZIP-to-county file, which is a reminder to check any automated list against the filings. Private companies don't publish results, so they're not ranked.
Fortune 500 companies in Charlotte
The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance said in June 2026 that its 14-county region had added an eighth Fortune 500 company with the 2026 Fortune list and has 19 Fortune 1000 companies in all. It highlighted Ingersoll Rand's debut on the Fortune 500, Magnera's first appearance in the Fortune 1000 and Brighthouse Financial's rise. Fortune's ranks use its own revenue definitions, so use Fortune for ranks and the table above for figures traceable to a filing.
Biggest companies versus biggest employers
The North Carolina Department of Commerce's list of Mecklenburg County's largest employers for the first quarter of 2026 puts the Charlotte Mecklenburg Hospital Authority first, then Wells Fargo Bank, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education and Bank of America. Wells Fargo (San Francisco) and American Airlines (Fort Worth), both near the top of that list, are headquartered elsewhere, and four of the top ten employers are public bodies. If you sell something priced per employee in Charlotte, the employer list matters more than this one; if you sell to corporate headquarters functions such as treasury, legal or investor relations, this one matters more.
What the list says about Charlotte's economy
| Group | Companies | Combined revenue |
|---|---|---|
| Banking and financial services | Bank of America, Truist, Brighthouse, LendingTree | $141.3 billion |
| Consumer and retail | Lowe's, Sonic Automotive, Coca-Cola Consolidated, Six Flags, Driven Brands, Krispy Kreme, Shoe Carnival | $116.3 billion |
| Industrial and materials | Honeywell, Nucor, Ingersoll Rand, Albemarle, Curtiss-Wright, JELD-WEN, Magnera, SPX, Columbus McKinnon, Enpro, Hayward | $98.4 billion |
Duke Energy, Sunbelt Rentals, RXO and Dentsply Sirona make up the rest. Charlotte's banking reputation is earned at the top, but by count the industrial group is the largest, and most of it sits in the $1 billion to $8 billion range: mid-cap manufacturers with real procurement teams but without the vendor bureaucracy of a global bank.
Selling to Charlotte's largest companies
At the banks, expect third-party risk management: a security questionnaire, financial review and contract terms set by the bank before any pilot. At the industrial companies, buying usually splits between corporate (which sets standards and negotiates master agreements) and plants or business units (which choose within them). The 10-K tells you how many segments a company has and where its plants are, which is how you map the second layer.
Illustrative example. The seller and its figures are fictional; company figures are from the table.
Piedmont Translation (piedmontlang.example) translates technical manuals and safety documents for manufacturers with operations abroad.
- From the table it picks the industrial group, then keeps the nine with $1 billion to $8 billion in revenue: Ingersoll Rand, Albemarle, Curtiss-Wright, JELD-WEN, Magnera, SPX, Columbus McKinnon, Enpro and Hayward.
- Their combined headcount is about 78,000.
- It assumes each spends $150,000 to $400,000 a year on translation, so the nine are worth $1.35 million to $3.6 million a year, and two wins would double Piedmont's revenue.
- It aims at the head of technical documentation or product compliance at each, not procurement, because they choose the vendor and procurement finalizes terms.
Bebop can research each of the seven, including which product lines sell abroad and who owns documentation, and draft the opening email.

Questions people ask
What is the largest company in Charlotte?
By revenue, Bank of America is the largest company headquartered in Charlotte: $113.1 billion in total revenue, net of interest expense, for 2025, according to its 10-K, with about 213,000 employees. Lowe's, based in Mooresville in the Charlotte metro, is second with $86.3 billion for the fiscal year ended January 30, 2026. Honeywell is third with $37.4 billion.
How many Fortune 500 companies are in Charlotte?
Eight, according to the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance's June 2026 release on the 2026 Fortune list, which also counts 19 Fortune 1000 companies in its 14-county region. By revenue in their own 10-Ks, the biggest Charlotte-area companies are Bank of America, Lowe's, Honeywell, Nucor, Duke Energy and Truist; check Fortune's site for each one's rank.
Is Lowe's headquartered in Charlotte?
Lowe's is headquartered at 1000 Lowes Boulevard in Mooresville, North Carolina, according to its latest 10-K. Mooresville is in Iredell County, part of the Census Bureau's Charlotte-Concord-Gastonia metro area, so Lowe's is usually counted among Charlotte-area headquarters. It reported $86.3 billion in net sales for the year to January 30, 2026.
Which Charlotte companies have the most employees?
From their latest 10-Ks, Lowe's reports about 167,000 full-time and 109,000 part-time associates, Bank of America about 213,000 employees and Honeywell about 101,000. Truist reports 38,711 teammates and Nucor about 33,000. These are company-wide numbers; for headcount in Mecklenburg County itself, the state's largest-employers list ranks employers but gives only a size band.
Why isn't Wells Fargo on the list of Charlotte companies?
Wells Fargo is the second-largest employer in Mecklenburg County on the North Carolina Department of Commerce's 2026 list, but its 10-K names San Francisco as its principal executive office, so it doesn't count as a Charlotte headquarters. American Airlines is similar: fifth on the Mecklenburg list, but its SEC filings give a Fort Worth, Texas address.
