The 14 largest public companies in Kansas City
Each row comes from the company's latest annual report on Form 10-K: the principal executive office on its cover, revenue as reported, and the headcount in its human capital section. We checked every company the SEC lists with a Kansas City-area business address and kept those whose filing confirms a headquarters in the Kansas City, MO-KS metro.
| Rank | Company | Headquarters | Revenue | Fiscal year ended | Employees |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Seaboard | Merriam, KS | $9.75 billion | Dec 2025 | about 14,000 |
| 2 | Evergy | Kansas City, MO | $5.96 billion | Dec 2025 | 4,691 |
| 3 | AMC Entertainment | Leawood, KS | $4.85 billion | Dec 2025 | 33,311 (2,931 full-time) |
| 4 | Euronet Worldwide | Leawood, KS | $4.24 billion | Dec 2025 | about 10,800 |
| 5 | H&R Block | Kansas City, MO | $3.95 billion | Jun 2026 | about 4,600 regular full-time |
| 6 | UMB Financial | Kansas City, MO | $2.65 billion | Dec 2025 | 5,222 full-time equivalent |
| 7 | Custom Truck One Source | Kansas City, MO | $1.94 billion | Dec 2025 | about 2,500 |
| 8 | Ferrellgas Partners | Liberty, MO | $1.86 billion | Jul 2026 | 3,934 full-time |
| 9 | Commerce Bancshares | Kansas City, MO | $1.76 billion | Dec 2025 | 4,577 full-time |
| 10 | SelectQuote | Overland Park, KS | $1.62 billion | Jun 2026 | 1,098 agents and 2,941 other staff |
| 11 | Compass Minerals | Overland Park, KS | $1.24 billion | Sep 2025 | 1,849 |
| 12 | First Busey | Leawood, KS | $0.72 billion | Dec 2025 | 1,914 full-time equivalent |
| 13 | EPR Properties | Kansas City, MO | $0.72 billion | Dec 2025 | 54 full-time |
| 14 | Butler National | New Century, KS | $0.10 billion | Apr 2026 | 158 full-time, excluding casino staff |
Notes on the figures:
- Banks (UMB, Commerce and First Busey) are shown at total revenue: net interest income plus noninterest income, the measure Commerce itself defines in its 10-K. The SEC's structured data tags their gross interest income instead, which overstates UMB's revenue by $0.7 billion.
- H&R Block's headcount swings with tax season: it employed up to about 73,400 people at the peak of its year to June 2026.
- Ferrellgas Partners' units trade over the counter; its employees are employed by its general partner.
- Headcounts are company-wide. Few 10-Ks say how many people work in Kansas City itself; Evergy notes that its 4,691 employees work primarily in Kansas and Missouri.
Three more listed companies give Kansas City-area headquarters but report little or no revenue: Kustom Entertainment (Overland Park), Palmer Square Capital BDC (Mission Woods), an investment fund, and Cingulate (Kansas City, Kansas), a drug developer.
How the list breaks down
| Group | Companies | Combined revenue |
|---|---|---|
| Financial services | Euronet, H&R Block, UMB, Commerce, SelectQuote, First Busey | $14.94 billion |
| Food, agriculture and shipping | Seaboard | $9.75 billion |
| Energy and utilities | Evergy, Ferrellgas | $7.83 billion |
| Entertainment and leisure | AMC, EPR Properties (theater and attraction real estate), Butler National (aviation and gaming) | $5.67 billion |
| Industrial | Custom Truck One Source, Compass Minerals | $3.19 billion |
Seven companies are in Johnson County, Kansas and seven on the Missouri side, but the Kansas seven (led by Seaboard, AMC and Euronet) report $22.5 billion, 54% of the total. The concentration in financial services is Kansas City's real distinction: payments, tax preparation, two regional banks and an insurance distributor, which makes the metro a good test market for anything sold to compliance, fraud or customer service teams.
Companies that left the list
Older rankings of Kansas City's biggest companies still carry names whose SEC records show they're gone:
| Company | What its SEC record shows |
|---|---|
| Cerner (North Kansas City) | Delisted (Form 25) 8 June 2022 and deregistered (Form 15) 23 June 2022 after its acquisition; OneKC now lists it as Oracle Cerner |
| Kansas City Southern | Delisted 14 December 2021; final deregistration April 2023 |
| Waddell & Reed (Overland Park) | Delisted 3 May 2021 and deregistered 13 May 2021 |
| Hostess Brands (Lenexa) | Delisted 7 November 2023 and deregistered 20 November 2023; OneKC lists it as part of J.M. Smucker |
| Kansas City Life Insurance | Delisted December 2015 and deregistered January 2016, so it no longer files annual reports |
| Garmin | Its US company is in Olathe, but Garmin Ltd.'s 10-K gives Schaffhausen, Switzerland as its principal executive office |
Private giants and Fortune lists
Private companies don't publish revenue, so no filing-based ranking can include them. OneKC's employer list shows several large private headquarters in the region, among them Hallmark Cards (2,500 to 4,999 regional employees), Burns & McDonnell (2,500 to 4,999), Black & Veatch, Associated Wholesale Grocers, JE Dunn Construction and Lockton (1,000 to 2,499 each). Fortune's lists rank companies by revenue with their own definitions and timing, so use Fortune's site for its ranks and this table for figures you can trace to a filing. The metro's size profile is consistent with a short list: the Census Bureau counted 57 business locations with 1,000 or more employees and 440 corporate and regional management offices in the metro in 2023.
What's changing in 2026
Three filings show the list is still moving, and each is a reason for a supplier to call:
- UMB Financial said on 27 October 2026 that El Dorado Savings Bank will merge into UMB Bank, adding 31 branches in California and four in Nevada and taking UMB to 227 branches in 15 states.
- Commerce Bancshares completed its merger with FineMark effective 1 January 2026, according to its 10-K.
- First Busey now reports a Leawood headquarters after buying CrossFirst Bankshares in March 2025, while its bank remains in Champaign, Illinois.
Mergers bring system conversions, rebranding, new vendor reviews and new reporting lines, usually within the first year.
Selling to Kansas City's public companies
Every 10-K now includes Item 1C, where the company describes how it manages cybersecurity risk and who oversees it, and Item 1A, its risk factors. Read both before you write: they tell you who owns the problem you solve and how the board talks about it.
Illustrative example. The seller and its figures are fictional; the company figures are from the table.
Prairie Shield (prairieshield.example), a Lenexa firm that runs incident-response exercises for executive teams, wants Kansas City's public companies.
- It drops EPR Properties (54 employees) and Butler National, leaving 12 companies with $40.6 billion in revenue.
- Six are financial firms that hold customer money and data, so it starts there.
- At $45,000 per exercise and one exercise a year, three clients are worth $135,000 a year.
- It writes to the security leader each Item 1C describes, citing the company's own disclosure.
Bebop can find the security leaders at each company and draft outreach that references what each 10-K says about its program.
Subject: A tabletop exercise built on [Company]'s own risk disclosures Hi [first name], [Company]'s 10-K says the [audit / risk] committee reviews cybersecurity [quarterly], and lists [ransomware / third-party breach] among its risks. A tabletop built on those exact scenarios gives the committee something concrete to review.
