Law firms in Buffalo: 550 offices, 4,440 registered attorneys and how to check and reach them

Erie County, home to Buffalo, has more registered attorneys than any New York county outside New York City and its suburbs, and New York publishes every registration as open data. That makes Buffalo unusually easy to research properly, if you know which numbers to trust.

This report is for people who need a lawyer in Buffalo or Niagara Falls, lawyers and staff weighing local employers, and companies that sell to Western New York law firms. It uses two sources that count different things: New York's attorney registrations, which count lawyers, and the Census Bureau's County Business Patterns, which counts offices.

Lawyers: New York's attorney registrations

Every lawyer admitted in New York registers with the Unified Court System, and the state publishes the public part of those records on data.ny.gov. As of its 30 October 2026 update:

CountyCurrently registered attorneysDue to re-register within 30 days
Erie4,165627
Niagara27544
Metro total4,440671

Erie County ranks seventh among New York's 62 counties by currently registered attorneys, behind Manhattan, Nassau, Westchester, Brooklyn, Suffolk and Queens, and ahead of Albany (3,766) and Monroe (2,446). The same records show 139 Erie County attorneys as delinquent and 50 as suspended for delinquency, which is why a status check matters.

The University at Buffalo's law school dominates: 2,632 of the 4,440 currently registered attorneys in the two counties, 59%, list it under one of its several names.

Who Buffalo's lawyers work for

Of the 4,165 currently registered Erie County attorneys, 3,885 name an employer, under about 2,190 different employer names. The distribution is steep:

Registered attorneys per employer nameEmployer names
11,769
2 to 4322
5 to 965
10 to 2422
25 or more12

Treat these as approximate: the same employer can appear under several spellings (with or without "LLP", or "Office" in the name), which splits its count. The larger names aren't all law firms. M&T Bank, which gives One M&T Plaza in Buffalo as its principal executive office in its 10-K, has 41 registered attorneys at its Erie County address, and the Erie County District Attorney's Office and the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo also appear among the largest employers once their spelling variants are combined. To size a particular firm, filter the data by county and firm name and add up the variants.

Nothing in metro Buffalo reaches 250 employees: the classes shown sum to all 550 offices, and the Bureau leaves the larger ones unpublished. Nine offices reach 100 employees; 40 sit between 20 and 99; the other 501 are under 20. Erie's offices average 9.6 employees; Niagara's average 2.8.

Pay is the striking figure. Buffalo's law offices average $79,350 per employee, against $163,723 for New York State (pulled up by Manhattan) and $125,580 nationally. The Census Bureau's Nonemployer Statistics add 1,196 legal services businesses in the metro with no employees, with $94.3 million in receipts, about $78,900 each, under a broader code (NAICS 5411) that includes paralegal and title businesses.

Limits. Census counts offices with paid staff, not firms, so a firm with offices downtown and in Amherst counts twice; employees include all staff; owners aren't employees. The registry counts lawyers by the business address they report, which includes in-house, government and nonprofit lawyers.

Hiring a Buffalo lawyer

  1. Get a referral if you need one. The Bar Association of Erie County's Lawyer Referral and Information Service covers Western New York. Call (716) 852-3100 (weekdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) or request online; the lawyer it refers you to offers a 30-minute consultation for $20.
  2. Check the registration. Search the lawyer's name in the NYS Attorney Registrations data. "Currently registered" is what you want to see; "delinquent" or "suspended" is a reason to ask questions.
  3. Match the office to the matter. With 449 offices of fewer than ten employees and nine of 100 or more, the choice is usually obvious: a closing, a will or a small claim goes to a local practice; a corporate deal or a complex lawsuit to one of the larger firms.

Selling to Buffalo law firms

Buffalo's firms are smaller and pay less than the state average, so price matters more than it does in Manhattan. The registry is your best prospecting tool: it tells you how many registered lawyers each firm has, at which address, and when each was admitted.

Illustrative example. The company, percentages and results are invented.

Peace Bridge Records (peacebridge-records.example) retrieves medical records for personal injury and workers' compensation cases. It targets metro offices with 5 to 99 employees, 183 in all (91 + 52 + 31 + 9), and keeps those whose websites show injury or workers' compensation practices, an illustrative 25%, or about 46 firms. It uses the registry to rank them by number of registered attorneys and writes first to the litigation paralegal or office manager. At a 7% reply rate, three conversations, and with one or two trial orders it has a foothold in a small, connected market.

Finding the injury practices and the person who orders records at each is the slow part; Bebop finds firms matching a plain-language description and writes a playbook for each account. See the selling to law firms guide for the confidentiality questions to expect.

How do I find a lawyer in Buffalo?

The Bar Association of Erie County runs a Lawyer Referral and Information Service for Western New York. How do I check if a New York lawyer is in good standing?

Search the lawyer's name in the NYS Attorney Registrations dataset on data.ny.gov, which the Unified Court System updates regularly. Currently registered is the normal status; delinquent or suspended means the lawyer hasn't met registration requirements. For disciplinary history, contact the Appellate Division department where the lawyer was admitted.
