Connecticut by the numbers
| Measure (2023) | Connecticut |
|---|---|
| Law offices with paid employees | 1,953 |
| Employees | 11,903 |
| Annual payroll | $1,262,650,000 |
| Average employees per office | 6.1 |
| Average annual pay | $106,078 |
| Share of US law offices | 1.18% of 165,491 |
| Rank among states by law offices | 27 |
| Employees per office | Offices |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 1,316 |
| 5 to 9 | 367 |
| 10 to 19 | 156 |
| 20 to 49 | 88 |
| 50 to 99 | 17 |
| 100 to 249 | 9 |
The published size classes add up to all 1,953 offices, so the unpublished cells for 250 or more employees are empty. Grouped, 1,839 offices have 1 to 19 employees, 105 have 20 to 99 and 9 have 100 or more.
These are County Business Patterns figures for NAICS 541110, offices of lawyers. They count locations that have paid employees, so a firm with Hartford and Stamford offices is two, and they leave out solo lawyers without staff, in-house lawyers and government lawyers. Average pay of $106,078 is below the US law-office average of $125,580. Part of the reason is what payroll leaves out: partners are owners, and their share of profits isn't wages.
By planning region
The Census Bureau now publishes Connecticut's county-level figures for its nine planning regions, which replaced the eight historical counties as county-equivalents. From the same 2023 data:
| Planning region | Main cities | Offices | Employees | Average annual pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capitol | Hartford | 530 | 4,366 | $102,521 |
| Western Connecticut | Stamford, Norwalk, Danbury | 402 | 2,294 | $126,806 |
| South Central Connecticut | New Haven | 355 | 2,160 | $105,148 |
| Greater Bridgeport | Bridgeport | 205 | 1,075 | $127,628 |
| Naugatuck Valley | Waterbury | 188 | 925 | $72,970 |
| Southeastern Connecticut | New London, Norwich | 118 | 551 | $93,466 |
| Lower Connecticut River Valley | Middletown | 84 | 337 | $83,964 |
| Northwest Hills | Torrington | 46 | 130 | $70,715 |
| Northeastern Connecticut | Putnam | 23 | 63 | $49,460 |
Two offices aren't assigned to a region, which is why the regions add up to 1,951. The Capitol region is the state's legal center: it has the most offices, the largest average office (8.2 employees) and six of the nine offices with 100 or more employees. Western Connecticut and Greater Bridgeport, which together cover Fairfield County, pay the most.
How Connecticut's law offices are organized
County Business Patterns also reports offices by legal form:
| Legal form | Offices | Employees | Average per office |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sole proprietorships | 595 | 1,399 | 2.4 |
| S corporations | 573 | 2,663 | 4.6 |
| Partnerships | 528 | 5,377 | 10.2 |
| C corporations and other corporate forms | 233 | 2,177 | 9.3 |
| Nonprofits | 24 | 287 | 12.0 |
Sole proprietorships are the most common form, a sign of how many Connecticut lawyers practice alone with a small staff. Partnerships, though only 27% of offices, employ 45% of the people who work in law offices. For a buyer that means the firms with real depth are mostly partnerships; for a seller it means the decision at those firms usually involves more than one partner.
Checking a Connecticut lawyer
Connecticut's lawyers are regulated through the Judicial Branch, whose attorney regulation pages cover the Statewide Grievance Committee, the Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel, the Bar Examining Committee, certificates of good standing and the Client Security Fund.
- Ask for a certificate of good standing if you need written proof that a lawyer is admitted and in good standing; the Judicial Branch explains how to request one.
- Check for grievances through the Statewide Grievance Committee, which publishes its hearing schedules.
- Know the Client Security Fund. Lawyers and judges required by Practice Book Section 2-70 pay an annual fee into it (due 15 June in 2026), and it reimburses clients who lost money or property through a lawyer's dishonest conduct.
- Get a referral if you need one. The Connecticut Bar Association, based in Meriden, runs a Find a Lawyer service.
- Put the fee agreement in writing, with the rates of everyone who will work on the matter.
Selling to Connecticut law firms
With 1,683 offices of fewer than ten people, most of the market buys like a small business: the owner decides. The 105 offices of 20 to 99 employees have a firm administrator, and the nine largest, most of them in the Capitol region, add committees and IT and security reviews.
Illustrative example. The company, percentages and results are invented.
Nutmeg Records Retrieval (nutmeg-records.example) requests, organizes and summarizes medical records for personal injury and insurance defense firms. It targets offices of 5 to 49 employees in the four biggest regions, using the Census regional size classes: Capitol 190, Western Connecticut 123, South Central 119 and Greater Bridgeport 58, or 490 offices. It keeps the litigation practices, an illustrative 30%, or about 147 firms. With the managing partner and the litigation paralegal or records coordinator at each, that's 294 contacts. A 6% reply rate gives about 18 conversations; if one in three sends a first request, six new accounts.
Working out which firms do injury or defense work, and who orders records at each, takes the time; Bebop finds firms that match a description and researches each account. For writing the first message, see how to write a cold email.

Could I take your next request as a trial? Send the authorization and the provider list and I'll show you the turnaround. [Your name]
