Law firms in Detroit: 2,130 offices, most of them in Oakland County, and what lawyers charge across the metro

The Detroit legal market's center of gravity isn't downtown Detroit: Oakland County has 58% of the metro's law offices and nearly three-quarters more lawyers than Wayne County. Downtown still sets the price, with a median hourly rate of $555, far above anywhere else in Michigan.

This page is for anyone who needs metro Detroit's law firms as a market, not a list of ads: a business or family choosing a lawyer, a lawyer or paralegal comparing employers, a researcher, or a company selling to law firms. It sets the Census count of law offices beside the State Bar of Michigan's own membership and rate data, county by county, then covers checking a lawyer and prospecting firms across the metro's three big circuits.

The office counts are County Business Patterns for the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn, MI Metro Area (CBSA 19820) under NAICS 541110, offices of lawyers. The member counts are the State Bar of Michigan's 2026 demographics for active members resident in Michigan, by county. Two employee counts carry the Census Bureau's high-noise flag (the noise added for confidentiality changed them by 5% or more), so they're left out.

Oakland County (Troy, Southfield, Bloomfield Hills, Farmington Hills) has more than twice Wayne's law offices and 74% more resident lawyers. Wayne's lawyers are less likely to be in private practice, 38.7% against 53.5% in Oakland; more of them work for courts, government, companies and legal services. Wayne's law offices are bigger payers, though: average pay there was $135,314 in 2023, against $116,837 in Oakland, from the same Census county data.

The Census Bureau doesn't publish the classes above 249 employees for the metro; the published ones fall two short of the total, so two offices sit above them. Grouped: 1,965 offices with 1 to 19 employees, 145 with 20 to 99 and 20 with 100 or more.

Keep the definitions in mind. An establishment is one location with paid staff, so a firm with a Troy office and a downtown office counts twice. Solo lawyers without staff aren't counted. Neither are in-house or government lawyers, who work outside NAICS 541110. Payroll is wages for employees and excludes partners' profit shares, which is one reason average pay looks low next to lawyers' incomes.

What metro Detroit lawyers charge

The State Bar of Michigan's 2026 Economics of Law Practice Survey asked about 2025 billing rates. It invited all 32,816 members by email and kept 4,652 responses after cleaning, a 14.2% response rate.

By circuit, the medians are $375 in Wayne's Third Circuit (816 respondents), $383 in Oakland's Sixth (891) and $350 in Macomb's 16th (355). Downtown Detroit's $555 is the highest of any location in the survey. Office size matters as much as address: the same survey found a $593 median for offices with more than 50 lawyers and $313 for one-lawyer offices.

Finding and checking a lawyer in metro Detroit

  1. Choose by court. A lawyer who's in the Third, Sixth or 16th Circuit every week knows its judges and local practice. Ask which court your matter will be in and who appears there often.
  2. Use the referral services. The State Bar of Michigan runs a Legal Resource and Referral Center, and the Oakland County Bar Association serves the county's lawyers.
  3. Confirm the license in the State Bar of Michigan's member directory.
  4. Benchmark the rate. A downtown firm quoting $550 an hour is at the local median; a suburban solo quoting it is not.
  5. Get the staffing and the budget in writing before you sign.

Selling across three circuits

Most metro Detroit firms are small, but the volume of court work across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb supports a lot of litigation-support spending. The 581 offices of 5 to 49 employees are the middle of the market: large enough to have an office manager or paralegal manager, small enough that one person still decides.

Illustrative example. The company, percentages and results are invented.

Woodward Filing Services (woodward-filing.example) does court filing, process serving and courier runs across the three circuits. It starts with the 581 metro offices of 5 to 49 employees and keeps the litigation-heavy ones, an illustrative 40%, or about 232 firms. One or two contacts each (the office manager and the senior litigation paralegal) make about 350 people. A 6% reply rate gives about 21 conversations; if one in four sends a rush filing to test the service, five new accounts.

Knowing which firms file the most in each circuit, and who books the runners, is the research that matters; Bebop finds firms that match a description and writes a playbook for each account. For the statewide picture, see law firms in Michigan.
