Law firms in Michigan: 3,750 offices, who the state's lawyers work for, and what they charge

Michigan's legal market is more concentrated than its office count suggests: Oakland County alone has a third of the state's law offices and a third of its resident lawyers. And fewer than half of Michigan's active lawyers are in private practice, so the firms are only part of the profession you'll deal with.

The Census Bureau doesn't publish the classes above 249 employees for the state; the published ones come to 3,748, so two offices are larger. Grouped, 3,519 offices have 1 to 19 employees, 206 have 20 to 99 and 25 have 100 or more.

County Business Patterns counts establishments under NAICS 541110, offices of lawyers: each location with at least one paid employee. A firm with offices in Detroit, Troy and Grand Rapids counts three times. Self-employed lawyers without staff aren't included, and neither are lawyers employed outside law offices, in companies, government, courts or universities. Payroll is employee wages, so partners' profits aren't in the average pay.

The office and pay figures are from the Census county file; the member figures are the State Bar of Michigan's 2026 counts of active members resident in Michigan, by county. Ingham County stands out: 2,511 resident lawyers but only 147 law offices, and just 28.6% of those lawyers in private practice, the pattern of a state capital where government, courts and associations employ much of the bar. Washtenaw, with the University of Michigan, is similar at 39.3%.

What Michigan lawyers charge and earn

The State Bar's 2026 Economics of Law Practice Survey (2025 figures; 4,652 responses kept after cleaning, a 14.2% response rate) shows rates climbing steeply with firm size:

S corporations run 56% of Michigan's law offices, mostly small. Partnerships are only 388 offices but average 13 employees each, and the corporate forms other than S corporations average about 10. The nonprofit employee count carries the Census Bureau's high-noise flag (confidentiality noise moved it by 5% or more), so it isn't shown.

Checking a Michigan lawyer

  1. Confirm the license in the State Bar of Michigan's member directory.
  2. Get a referral from the State Bar's Legal Resource and Referral Center, or from a local bar such as the Oakland County or Grand Rapids bar associations.
  3. Benchmark the rate by firm size, not just by city: a solo at $313 and a large-firm lawyer at $593 are both at their medians.
  4. Ask who does the work, and get the rates of every person on the matter in writing.

Selling to Michigan law firms statewide

Most of the buying happens in small firms, and the geography is lopsided: plan Oakland and Wayne first, then Kent, Washtenaw and Ingham, and treat the rest of the state as one long tail.

Illustrative example. The company, percentages and results are invented.

Mitten Pay (mittenpay.example) sells online card and bank payments built to keep earned fees and client trust money separate. It targets the 1,008 Michigan law offices with 5 to 49 employees, the firms big enough to bill monthly and small enough that one partner chooses the payment tool. With the managing partner and the office or billing manager at each, that's 2,016 contacts. It works county by county in the order above. A 4% reply rate gives about 80 conversations; if one in five starts a trial, 16 trials, before it touches the 2,678 smallest offices.

The time goes on sorting offices by practice and finding the billing manager at each; Bebop finds firms that match a description and writes a playbook for each account. The wider buying process at law firms is in selling to law firms.

Hi [first name],

Firms of [firm]'s size in [county] usually still take most payments by check, which means a month between the invoice and the deposit and a trip to the bank for every retainer.

[Product] lets clients pay an invoice or a retainer online by card or bank transfer, and keeps retainers separate from earned fees so the trust account stays clean.
