On this page
This page is for people who need West Michigan's law firms as a market: businesses and families choosing a lawyer, lawyers and law students weighing employers, researchers, and companies that sell to law firms. It combines the Census count of law offices with the State Bar of Michigan's membership and rate data for Kent and Ottawa counties, then covers choosing a lawyer and selling to firms.

The Census figures cover the Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood, MI Metro Area (CBSA 24340) and NAICS 541110, offices of lawyers. Average pay is for everyone on law office payrolls, from receptionists to associates, and it excludes partners, who are paid from profits.
A big-firm town for its size
The State Bar of Michigan reports where its private-practice members work by size of firm. Kent County's mix looks nothing like the state's:
| Firm size (lawyers) | Kent County lawyers | Share of Kent private practice | Michigan share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 or more | 485 | 32.7% | 15.9% |
| 21 to 99 | 206 | 13.9% | 12.2% |
| 11 to 20 | 107 | 7.2% | 7.0% |
| 2 to 10 | 351 | 23.7% | 28.6% |
| Solo, full-time | 203 | 13.7% | 21.6% |
| Solo, part-time | 131 | 8.8% | 13.4% |
(The statewide shares leave out the 1.3% of private practitioners who didn't report a firm size.) A Kent County lawyer in private practice is twice as likely as the average Michigan one to work at a firm of 100 or more, and far less likely to work alone.
That can look odd next to the Census figures below, which show only four offices in the metro with 100 or more employees. The two count different things: the bar counts lawyers by the size of their whole firm, while Census counts employees in each office. A large firm's Grand Rapids office holds a share of its lawyers, and those few big offices employ a large part of the local bar.
Kent, Ottawa and the outer counties
| County | Law offices (2023) | Employees | Active State Bar members (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kent | 280 | 2,377 | 2,700 |
| Ottawa | 54 | 240 | 447 |
| Montcalm | 10 | 22 | 49 |
| Barry | 8 | 28 | 57 |
| Ionia | 5 | Not reported (high-noise figure) | 46 |
Kent County has 78% of the offices and 88% of the jobs, with offices averaging 8.5 employees. Ottawa County (Holland, Grand Haven and Hudsonville) has 54 offices averaging 4.4. Ionia's employee count carries the Census Bureau's high-noise flag, meaning confidentiality noise changed it by 5% or more, so it isn't shown.
| Employees per office | Offices |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 242 |
| 5 to 9 | 62 |
| 10 to 19 | 25 |
| 20 to 49 | 21 |
| 50 to 99 | 3 |
| 100 to 249 | 4 |
The published classes add up to all 357 offices, so the unpublished cells for 250 or more are empty. Grouped: 329 offices with 1 to 19 employees, 24 with 20 to 99 and 4 with 100 or more. As always with County Business Patterns, these are locations with paid employees: lawyers working alone without staff, in-house counsel and government lawyers aren't counted.
What Grand Rapids lawyers charge
The State Bar of Michigan's 2026 Economics of Law Practice Survey asked members about 2025 billing rates; 4,652 responses were kept after cleaning, a 14.2% response rate.
| Area | Respondents | Median hourly rate, 2025 | Middle half of rates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Rapids area | 208 | $403 | $310 to $500 |
| Kent County (17th Circuit) | 261 | $400 | $310 to $500 |
| Ottawa County (20th Circuit) | 102 | $375 | $300 to $450 |
| All Michigan respondents | 2,102 | $350 | $275 to $465 |
The Grand Rapids figure is above every other Michigan location in the survey except downtown Detroit ($555), consistent with the big-firm share above.
Choosing a Grand Rapids lawyer
- No name yet? The Grand Rapids Bar Association runs a Lawyer Referral Service.
- Confirm the license in the State Bar of Michigan's member directory.
- Decide whether you need a large firm. With a third of the local private bar at big firms, it's easy to end up paying big-firm rates for routine work. A small practice can often handle a lease, an estate plan or a straightforward dispute.
- Benchmark the quote against the $403 local median, and ask for the rates of everyone on the team.
Selling to Grand Rapids law firms
Only 28 offices in the metro have 20 or more employees, and they employ a large share of the local bar. Treat them as named accounts and reach the small practices with a lighter, repeatable offer.
Illustrative example. The company, percentages and results are invented.
Lakeshore Lateral (lakeshore-lateral.example) recruits associates and lateral partners for West Michigan firms. Its clients are the 28 offices with 20 or more employees; its candidates are the 691 Kent County lawyers at firms of 21 or more. For each client office it maps the hiring partner, the recruiting coordinator and the managing partner, 84 people in all, and tracks openings on firms' career pages. If an illustrative quarter of the offices take a call in the first quarter, that's seven relationships; in this illustration, one placement covers the quarter's effort.
Tracking openings, lateral moves and who runs hiring at each firm is the research that keeps a list like this current; Bebop researches each account and writes a playbook for it. For the statewide view, see law firms in Michigan.
Hi [first name], I saw [firm] is hiring a [practice area] associate in Grand Rapids. In a market this size, the strongest candidates are usually already employed at one of a few dozen firms and aren't reading job boards. We place associates and lateral partners only in West Michigan, so we know who is open to a move before they post a résumé. If the role is still open, I can send three anonymized profiles this week. Questions people ask
How many law firms are in Grand Rapids?
Census County Business Patterns counted 357 law offices with paid employees in the Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood metro area in 2023, employing 2,686 people. Kent County had 280 of them and Ottawa County 54. The count is of offices rather than firms, so a firm with two locations counts twice, and it leaves out lawyers who practice alone without staff.
How many lawyers are in Kent County, Michigan?
The State Bar of Michigan's 2026 demographics count 2,700 active members resident in Kent County, of whom 1,483 are in private practice. Of those, 485 work at firms of 100 or more lawyers, 32.7% against 15.9% statewide. Ottawa County has 447 active members. These counts include lawyers who work in companies, government and courts.
How much does a lawyer cost per hour in Grand Rapids?
The State Bar of Michigan's 2026 Economics of Law Practice Survey found a median 2025 hourly rate of $403 for lawyers with offices in the Grand Rapids area, with the middle half charging $310 to $500. The statewide median was $350. Rates rise with experience and firm size, so a big-firm partner will charge more and a solo practitioner usually less.
How do I find a lawyer in Grand Rapids?
If you don't have a referral, start with the Grand Rapids Bar Association's Lawyer Referral Service, then confirm the lawyer's license in the State Bar of Michigan's member directory. Decide whether the matter needs a large firm: a third of Kent County's private-practice lawyers are at firms of 100 or more, and many routine matters don't need that bench.
