Law firms in Los Angeles: the largest firms, the market in numbers and how to choose one

Los Angeles has some of the country's biggest firms, but its legal market is wide rather than tall: no single law office in the metro area employs 1,000 people, and three in four have fewer than five. Which half of the market you need decides where you should look.

  • The State Bar certifies lawyer referral services, and its list for Los Angeles County runs to about 20.

The largest law firms in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Business Journal ranks law firms each year by the number of attorneys in Los Angeles County. Its list of 19 May 2025 put these ten on top:

9Munger, Tolles & Olson160140Los Angeles

The firms supplied the figures, and the Journal marks its own estimates. The count covers Los Angeles County only, so a firm's Orange County lawyers aren't in it, and it ranks size, not quality. All ten have offices outside Los Angeles: by the Journal's office counts, Munger, Tolles & Olson has the fewest (three), and Lewis Brisbois the most (55). The Journal publishes a new edition each spring, so check the date before you quote a number.

Los Angeles law offices in Census data

County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023 counts offices of lawyers (NAICS 541110) in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim, CA Metro Area (CBSA 31080), which is Los Angeles County plus Orange County.

Grouped, 10,584 offices have 1 to 19 employees, 659 have 20 to 99 and 87 have 100 or more. New York's five boroughs have nine law offices with 1,000 or more employees; Los Angeles has none, and its four largest sit in the 500 to 999 class. That fits the ranking: LA's biggest firms run large offices, but their lawyers are spread across Downtown, Century City and other sites. Los Angeles County holds 75% of the metro area's offices and 77% of its law-office jobs.

What the Census count leaves out: it counts establishments with paid employees, not firms, so a firm with Downtown and Century City offices counts twice. Solo lawyers without staff aren't included, because the self-employed are out of scope; the Census Bureau's Nonemployer Statistics count 16,909 legal services businesses with no paid employees in the metro area in 2024, a broader category that includes them. "Employees" covers everyone on the payroll, from paralegals to associates, and partners who own the firm aren't employees. In-house legal departments and government lawyers are counted in their employers' industries, not here.

How many lawyers practice in California

The State Bar of California's demographics page counted 201,374 active licensees on 29 October 2026, plus 75,431 inactive licensees, 2,318 judges and 22,599 not eligible to practice: 301,722 in all. The American Bar Association's 2025 profile, reported by the ABA Journal, put California's active lawyers at 181,048, second to New York. The two counts use different definitions and dates. The State Bar doesn't publish county totals on that page; it points requests for county data to its public records portal.

How California firms are organized matters when you vet one. The State Bar says professional corporations practicing law must be registered with it, and that it "does not certify an LLC within California for the purposes of practicing law." Most firms are therefore sole practices, partnerships (often LLPs) or registered law corporations.

How to choose a Los Angeles law firm

  1. Name the matter and the court. An unlawful detainer in Van Nuys, a trademark filing and a Delaware merger need different firms; filter by practice area before size.
  2. Use a certified referral service if you don't have a name. The State Bar's Los Angeles list includes the Los Angeles County Bar Association's SmartLaw service, bar-run services for the San Fernando Valley and the South Bay, and specialist services such as California Lawyers for the Arts. The State Bar certifies these services, and you can complain to it about one.
  3. Check the attorney profile. The State Bar's search shows each lawyer's license status, discipline and administrative history. Check every lawyer named in the engagement letter.
  4. Look for a certified specialist if your matter falls in one of the areas the State Bar certifies; its specialist search lists them.
  5. Agree the fee in writing, and know that LACBA runs fee dispute arbitration and mediation if a bill is contested later.

Prospecting Los Angeles law firms

Office sizeOffices (metro)Who usually decides
1 to 19 employees10,584The owner or a name partner, often with an office manager
20 to 99 employees659A firm administrator or COO, with the managing partner signing
100 or more employees87Function heads (IT, finance, HR, litigation support), with procurement and security review; many are branches buying through a national office

Check the bar's vendor landscape before you pitch. LACBA's home page features member-benefit providers such as MyCase, LawPay, First Legal, Rev and TimeSolv, so its members have already heard those offers. For roles and buying committees by firm size, see selling to law firms.

Illustrative example. The company, rates and results are invented.

Harborline Legal Staffing (harborline.example) places contract paralegals and wants offices of 20 to 249 employees: 503 + 156 + 68 = 727 in the metro. It drops branches of national firms that hire through a central HR team, about 35% on its own review, leaving roughly 473 accounts. With two contacts each (the firm administrator and a litigation partner), that's 946 people. A 3% reply rate gives about 28 conversations, and if one in five sends a job order, about six orders. Every point of reply rate is worth two more orders, which is why the research behind each first line matters. Bebop finds firms that match a description like this and writes an account playbook for each one.

Call opener for a firm administrator
Hi [first name], it's [your name] from [company]. I'll be quick: I saw [firm] is hiring a litigation paralegal in [office], and it's been open about [weeks]. We keep a bench of paralegals who already know LA Superior Court e-filing, and we can usually have two résumés to you in 48 hours. Is the role still open, and who's running the search?

Questions people ask

What is the biggest law firm in Los Angeles?

By attorneys in Los Angeles County, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher was the largest in the Los Angeles Business Journal's list of 19 May 2025, with 307, just ahead of Sheppard Mullin with 305 and Latham & Watkins with 267. The figures are supplied by the firms and cover LA County only, so Orange County offices aren't counted. The Journal updates the list every year.

How many law firms are there in Los Angeles?

Census County Business Patterns counted 11,330 law offices with paid employees in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro area in 2023: 8,461 in Los Angeles County and 2,869 in Orange County. They employed 74,795 people. The count is of offices, not firms, and leaves out solo lawyers who have no employees, so the number of practicing lawyers is far higher.

How do I check if a California lawyer is licensed?

Search the State Bar of California's attorney profile tool by name or bar number. It shows whether the lawyer is active and eligible to practice, any public discipline and its administrative history. If the firm is a law corporation, the State Bar also keeps its registration. Check every lawyer named in your engagement letter, not just the partner you met.

How do I find an affordable lawyer in Los Angeles?

Start with a lawyer referral service certified by the State Bar of California, such as the Los Angeles County Bar Association's SmartLaw or the San Fernando Valley and South Bay bar services. They match you with a screened panel lawyer for your type of case. If your income is low, ask the service about legal aid. Agree the fee in writing before work starts.

How much do law firm employees earn in Los Angeles?

Average annual pay at law offices in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim metro area was $138,035 in 2023, from Census County Business Patterns payroll of $10.3 billion across 74,795 employees. That average mixes partners' assistants, paralegals and associates, and leaves out partners who own their firms, so it isn't a lawyer salary. It's above the US law-office average of about $125,600.
