This report is for anyone looking for a law firm in New Orleans, Metairie or the river parishes, comparing local employers, or selling to firms there. It combines Census and BLS figures with Louisiana's own lawyer-regulation sources.
Lawyers per job: twice the national rate
The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) for May 2025 count jobs by occupation across every employer in the New Orleans-Metairie metro:
| Occupation | Employed | Mean annual wage | Location quotient |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lawyers | 4,330 | $144,250 | 2.00 |
| Paralegals and legal assistants | 2,120 | $64,370 | 1.88 |
| All legal occupations | 7,220 | $113,640 | 1.93 |
A location quotient of 2.00 means lawyers make up twice the share of local jobs that they do nationally; legal occupations as a group account for 16.2 of every 1,000 jobs in the metro. Lawyers' mean wage is below the national $185,840, so this is a market of many lawyers rather than highly paid ones. OEWS counts employees only, so lawyers who own their firms aren't included.
Law offices by parish
For the New Orleans-Metairie, LA Metro Area (CBSA 35380), County Business Patterns (CBP) 2023 reports these offices of lawyers (NAICS 541110) by parish:
| Parish | Offices | Employees | Average employees | Average annual pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Orleans Parish, Louisiana | 652 | 5,572 | 8.5 | $116,688 |
| Jefferson Parish, Louisiana | 342 | 1,975 | 5.8 | $81,037 |
| St. Charles Parish, Louisiana | 18 | 41 | 2.3 | $41,561 |
| St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana | 15 | not reported (high-noise figure) | n/a | n/a |
| St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana | 14 | not reported (high-noise figure) | n/a | n/a |
| Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana | 9 | not reported (high-noise figure) | n/a | n/a |
| St. James Parish, Louisiana | 3 | 7 | 2.3 | $40,000 |
| New Orleans metro | 1,053 | 7,695 | 7.3 | $106,710 |
St. Bernard, St. John the Baptist and Plaquemines show no employee figure because the Census Bureau marked theirs high-noise: the noise it injects for confidentiality changed them by 5% or more. We derived the averages from the published payroll and employee totals. Orleans Parish has 62% of the offices and 72% of the jobs. This metro definition (CBSA 35380) doesn't include St. Tammany Parish on the North Shore, so its law offices aren't counted here.
The metro has 33% of Louisiana's 3,217 law offices, and its average pay is 18% above the state's $90,693 (our calculation from the same dataset). Its share of US law offices is 0.64% of 165,491.
Office sizes
| Employees per office | Offices |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 728 |
| 5 to 9 | 146 |
| 10 to 19 | 91 |
| 20 to 49 | 60 |
| 50 to 99 | 19 |
| 100 to 249 | 9 |
| 250 or more | none (the published classes add up to all 1,053) |
Seven of the nine offices with 100 to 249 employees are in Orleans Parish. The 79 offices with 20 to 99 employees are 7.5% of the total, a larger share than in the San Antonio (5.6%) or Sacramento (6.2%) metros, both of which have more offices.
What CBP doesn't count. Lawyers practicing alone with no staff are outside these figures. Nonemployer Statistics, the Census Bureau's count of businesses without employees, puts the metro's legal services businesses of that kind at 1,533 in 2023, with $133.5 million in receipts; it uses the broad legal services code, which also takes in title abstract offices. CBP also counts locations, so a firm with offices on Poydras Street and in Metairie counts twice.
Louisiana's lawyer advertising rules
Louisiana's Rules of Professional Conduct (as amended through 10 May 2023, published by the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board) go further than most states:
- Filing. Most advertisements and unsolicited written communications must be filed with the Louisiana State Bar Association and carry the filing number it assigns (Rules 7.2 and 7.7). The LSBA's Rules of Professional Conduct Committee reviews filed ads for compliance.
- Office location. Ads must disclose, by city or town, at least one bona fide office of the lawyers who will do the work (Rule 7.2).
- Email. An unsolicited email to a prospective client must say "LEGAL ADVERTISEMENT" in the subject line (Rule 7.6). That isn't required for emails sent only to other lawyers.
For anyone selling marketing, intake or lead services to New Orleans injury, maritime-injury or consumer firms, this is the first thing a careful partner will ask about.
Checking a New Orleans lawyer
The Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board runs the state's lawyer discipline system and an attorney search. Its statistics page shows how often discipline happens:
| Sanctions imposed in 2025 | Number |
|---|---|
| Probation | 53 |
| Suspension | 43 |
| Interim suspension | 11 |
| Admonition | 8 |
| Permanent resignation in lieu of discipline | 5 |
| Disbarment or permanent disbarment | 4 |
| Probation revoked | 3 |
| Reprimand | 1 |
Membership in the Louisiana State Bar Association is mandatory for lawyers practicing in Louisiana, so its membership directory is the place to look up any practicing lawyer's contact details. The New Orleans Bar Association, founded in 1924, points the public to legal help from its "Find a Lawyer" page.
Selling to New Orleans law firms
Orleans Parish's mid-sized offices, with administrators and committees, buy like regional firms elsewhere: expect a security questionnaire and a slower yes. Jefferson Parish and the river parishes are mostly small practices where a partner decides in a call. Our guide to selling to law firms covers what each size asks.
Illustrative example. The agency, rates and outcomes are fictional.
Crescent Leads Studio (crescentleads.example) builds compliant ad campaigns for injury practices. Its target list is offices with 5 to 49 employees: 146 + 91 + 60 = 297 in the metro. If an estimated 30% handle personal injury, that's about 89. With one decision maker each and a 5% reply rate, that's four or five conversations; signing two would cover a quarter's sales target for a small agency. The angle: show a filed ad with its LSBA filing number and the office-location line already built in. Identifying the injury practices and the partner who handles marketing at each is research Bebop does for every account in a list.
Subject: Ads that clear the LSBA filing step first time Hi [first name], Most agencies treat Louisiana's ad filing as your problem. We build it in: every ad we make for [firm] comes with the filing package, the office-location line and, for email, the required subject line. Could I send you two recent examples with their filing numbers? If marketing isn't yours at the firm, who should I ask? [Your name] [Company], [postal address]
This email goes from a vendor to a lawyer, so Rule 7.6's subject-line requirement doesn't apply to it; the ads it sells would.

Questions people ask
How many law firms are there in New Orleans?
In 2023 the New Orleans-Metairie metro had 1,053 law offices with at least one employee, employing 7,695 people in all, according to County Business Patterns. Orleans Parish had 652 and Jefferson Parish 342. That counts office locations, so firms with several offices appear more than once, and it leaves out lawyers who practice alone without staff. Another 1,533 legal services businesses in the metro had no employees.
How many lawyers work in New Orleans?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated 4,330 lawyers employed on payrolls in the New Orleans-Metairie metro in May 2025, with a mean annual wage of $144,250. Their location quotient of 2.00 means lawyers are twice as large a share of local jobs as nationally. Lawyers who own their firms aren't in that survey, so more lawyers practice here than it shows.
Do Louisiana lawyers have to file their ads?
Yes, with some exemptions. Under Louisiana's Rules of Professional Conduct, most lawyer advertisements and unsolicited written communications must be filed with the Louisiana State Bar Association and include the filing number it assigns. Ads must also disclose a bona fide office location by city or town, and unsolicited emails to prospective clients must carry "LEGAL ADVERTISEMENT" in the subject line.
How do I check if a New Orleans lawyer is licensed?
Use the attorney search on the Louisiana Attorney Disciplinary Board's website, ladb.org, which also lets you request a lawyer's discipline history. Because membership in the Louisiana State Bar Association is mandatory for practicing lawyers, the LSBA's membership directory lists them too. In 2025 the board's statistics show 43 suspensions, 53 probations and four disbarments statewide.
What is the largest law firm in New Orleans?
Census data doesn't name firms, but its published size classes show no law office in the New Orleans metro with more than 249 employees in 2023. Nine had 100 to 249, seven of them in Orleans Parish. To compare firms, use each firm's own New Orleans office page for its lawyer count, and remember that regional firms report totals across several cities.
