Short answer
The Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood metro had 123 advertising, PR and related agency offices with paid staff in 2023, employing 699 people (Census County Business Patterns); 93 are in Kent County and 27 in Ottawa County. Another 72 offices are graphic design studios and 150 are marketing consultancies. Before you sign, agree in writing that you'll own the brand files, source files, domain, ad accounts and analytics, with a signed copyright assignment for the creative.
- 123 agency offices employ 699 people in the Grand Rapids metro; 112 have fewer than 20 employees.
- Kent County has 93 offices and Ottawa County 27; only three are elsewhere in the five-county metro.
- There are 72 graphic design studios, about six for every ten agency offices.
- A commissioned logo isn't a work made for hire; ownership needs a written, signed transfer.
- Stock photos, fonts and music are usually licensed, not owned: get the licenses in your name.

Grand Rapids agencies, counted
US Census Bureau, County Business Patterns 2023, Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood, MI Metro Area (CBSA 24340), NAICS 5418 (advertising, public relations and related services):
| Measure (2023) | Grand Rapids metro |
|---|---|
| Agency offices | 123 |
| Employees | 699 |
| Annual payroll | $46,606,000 |
| Employees per office | 5.7 |
| Average annual pay | $66,675 |
| Share of US offices | 0.32% of 38,864 |
| Employees at the office | Offices |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 80 |
| 5 to 9 | 23 |
| 10 to 19 | 9 |
| 20 to 49 | 10 |
| 50 or more | Not published (one office, by subtraction) |
Kent County has 93 offices and 575 employees; Ottawa County has 27 offices and 116 employees. That leaves three offices in Barry, Ionia and Montcalm counties combined.
What CBP leaves out. It counts establishments with paid employees, not companies, in March 2023. A studio with a Grand Rapids office and a Holland office counts twice; freelance designers without payroll aren't counted. Codes are NAICS 2017.
Agency, design studio or consultant?
| You need | Who does it | Code | Grand Rapids offices |
|---|---|---|---|
| Campaigns created and placed in media, including digital and paid social | Advertising agency | 541810 | 49 |
| Press coverage and reputation | PR agency | 541820 | 13 |
| A logo, brand identity, packaging or signage design, without media | Graphic design studio | 541430 | 72 |
| A marketing plan, pricing or positioning advice | Marketing consultancy | 541613 | 150 |
| Billboards and display | Display advertising | 541850 | 10 |
| Direct mail | Direct mail agency | 541860 | 5 |
| Promotional products, sign lettering | Other advertising services | 541890 | 38 |
| SEO and a custom website build | Often a web developer; the Census index files custom SEO under 541511 | 541511 | 184 |
The Census Bureau's definition of graphic design covers planning and managing visual communication such as printed materials, packaging, signage and logos; an advertising agency adds account management, media planning and buying. If you don't need media bought, a studio may be the better fit. Advertising agency employment here is flagged high-noise by the Census Bureau (published, but changed 5% or more by confidentiality noise), and four agency offices sit in codes too small to publish, so the 5418 rows add up to 119 of 123.
What you should own when the work is done
| Asset | What to ask for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Logo, brand and campaign creative | A written assignment of copyright, signed by the agency | Commissioned work is a "work made for hire" only in nine categories (contributions to collective works, parts of audiovisual works, translations and the like) with a signed agreement. A logo isn't one, and the Copyright Act says a transfer of copyright is valid only in a signed writing (17 U.S.C. 204(a)) |
| Source files | Native design files (layered and editable), not just PDFs and PNGs | Without them, the next agency starts over |
| Freelancer work | Assignments from any freelancer the agency used, flowing to you | The agency can't assign rights it never got |
| Stock photos, fonts, music | The licenses, in your company's name where the terms allow | Licensed assets are rented under terms; the license may not cover new uses or another agency |
| Photography and video of people | Signed releases from everyone shown | You need them to reuse footage later |
| Website domain | Registered with your company as registrant | ICANN tells registrants they "assume sole responsibility for the registration and use" of the domain |
| Hosting and CMS | Admin login held by you | A site you can't log in to isn't yours in practice |
| Google Ads and other ad accounts | Accounts in your name; the agency added as a user | Google says the agency "must set up a separate Ads account for you" and must give you the customer ID on request |
| Google Analytics | The Administrator role | Administrators can add and remove users; Editors can't |
| Email list and CRM data | Exports on request and on exit | Your customers, your data |
Put the list in the contract as a handover schedule, with a delivery date at the end of the engagement and no release fee.
Choosing a firm
- Read three case studies with named clients, then call one of those clients.
- Ask who owns the work today for an existing client. An agency that hesitates may be holding back files.
- Confirm the business with Michigan's Corporations Division (LARA) entity search, and check any Google Partner badge on Google Partners.
- Agree how you're billed. Omnicom's 2025 10-K lists the common bases: hourly or agreed fees, commissions on media, incentives tied to results and pass-through costs. Get the basis and any markup on third-party costs in writing.
- Start with a project before a retainer.
Local agency offices paid an average of $66,675 per employee in 2023, about 72% of the US industry average, so local labor costs sit well below the national norm; GSA's CALC+ data shows the national ceiling rates agencies charge federal buyers, if you want a benchmark.
Selling to Grand Rapids agencies
The buyer is almost always the owner: 112 of the 123 agency offices have fewer than 20 people, and so do all 72 design studios. These shops buy stock and font licenses, print, photography and video crews, website development and project tools, much of it rebilled to clients.
Illustrative example. The vendor, price and conversion rate are invented.
Riverbank Shoots (riverbank.example) books freelance product photographers for agencies at a 15% booking fee, about $375 on a typical $2,500 shoot. Its Grand Rapids list: 49 advertising agencies, 72 design studios and the consultancies that show product work, roughly 140 in all. If an illustrative 10% book two shoots a year, that's 14 agencies, 28 shoots and about $10,500 in fees. The opener mentions a product launch the agency just posted. For finding the owners and checking each shop's client list at volume, Bebop researches every account.

Questions people ask
How many marketing agencies are in Grand Rapids?
County Business Patterns counted 123 advertising, PR and related agency offices with paid employees in the Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood metro in 2023, employing 699 people. Kent County has 93 and Ottawa County 27. The metro also has 72 graphic design studios and 150 marketing consultancies, and freelancers without payroll aren't counted, so there are more options than the agency count suggests.
Do I own the logo my agency designed?
Not automatically. The US Copyright Office explains that commissioned work is a work made for hire only in nine categories, with a signed agreement, and a logo isn't one of them. Under 17 U.S.C. 204(a), a transfer of copyright is valid only in a writing signed by the owner. Ask for a signed copyright assignment covering the logo and source files.
Should I hire a design studio or a marketing agency?
Hire a graphic design studio for a logo, brand identity, packaging or signage when you don't need media bought. Hire an advertising agency when you need campaigns created and placed in media, with account management and media planning. The Grand Rapids metro has 72 design studios and 49 advertising agency offices, and many shops do some of both.
What should I get back when I leave a marketing agency?
Your ad accounts and analytics (ideally always in your name), the website domain and hosting logins, editable source files for all creative, signed copyright assignments, the stock, font and music licenses, model releases, and exports of any email list or CRM data.
