Companies in Grand Rapids: the furniture and parts makers, 9 public headquarters and 27,591 businesses

Grand Rapids is still a factory town: more than one job in five in the metro is in manufacturing. Its public headquarters list got shorter in 2025, when Steelcase and SpartanNash were bought out, but the furniture, auto parts and building products makers around it are as busy as ever.

This page is for people looking for companies in Grand Rapids: job seekers, suppliers to West Michigan's factories, companies weighing a move and B2B sellers building a territory. It starts with the manufacturing base that defines the region, then the public companies headquartered here, the largest employers, the Census count of every business, and the records for checking one. The Census figures cover the Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood metro: Kent, Ottawa, Montcalm, Barry and Ionia counties.

A factory town, in numbers

Manufacturing has 1,913 of the metro's 27,591 business establishments but 120,458 of its 539,797 jobs, 22.3%. In metro Detroit, the auto capital, the share is 13.0%. The plants are spread across several industries:

Average pay is our calculation from County Business Patterns (CBP) payroll; the furniture and pharmaceutical figures carry the Census Bureau's moderate-noise flag. Manufacturing sites average 63.0 employees, against 19.6 for all businesses, and 268 of the metro's 899 establishments with 100 or more employees are factories. Furniture is the industry the city is known for; machinery and metal shops employ more people, and the 72 auto parts plants average 177 employees each.

Two former headquarters are gone from the list. C&S Wholesale Grocers completed its acquisition of SpartanNash, the grocery distributor, on 22 September 2025, and HNI Corporation of Iowa completed its acquisition of Steelcase on 10 December 2025; both companies delisted and stopped filing with the SEC. Big private names, including Meijer, Gordon Food Service and Amway, don't publish results.

Who employs the most people

The City of Grand Rapids' Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the year to June 2024 lists principal employers selected from The Right Place's survey of West Michigan's largest employers. The city notes that the figures reflect 2020 data, because newer data wasn't available from The Right Place:

Use it for the shape, not the exact counts: health care leads by a wide margin, and four of the ten are manufacturers. The counts are self-reported for West Michigan, not the city alone, and Steelcase has since changed hands. The Census data adds the current picture: 31 establishments in the metro had 1,000 or more employees in 2023, and the 13 general hospitals have 4 of them.

Prospecting West Michigan manufacturers

The region's factories are mostly midsize: only 89 have 250 or more employees, while 751 have 20 to 249. At that size, decisions are usually made at the plant rather than a distant head office, which makes the buyers reachable, but they buy on proof: a reference from a plant nearby carries more weight than a brand.

Illustrative example. The company, prices and results are fictional; the plant counts are from the Census data above.

Grand River Robotics (grandriverrobotics.example) integrates collaborative welding robots for metal fabricators and machine builders.

  • Fabricated metal and machinery establishments with 50 to 249 employees: 43 + 24 + 44 + 21 = 132.
  • It assumes 60% weld in-house: about 79 prospects.
  • Two cells per customer at $180,000 each, for eight customers a year, would be $2.88 million of annual revenue.
  • It contacts the plant manager and the manufacturing engineering manager, and times outreach to the months after a plant posts welder openings it can't fill.

Knowing which of the 132 shops weld, and which just won a contract that strains their capacity, takes research on every plant; Bebop does that for each account and explains why it fits.

Email to a plant manager at a West Michigan fabricator
Subject: Welding capacity at [Company]

Hi [first name],

Most fabricators your size we talk to in Kent and Ottawa counties have more welding work than welders, and overtime is covering the gap.

We install collaborative welding cells that your current welders program themselves, usually in a week, and we can show you one running at a shop near you. Would a visit be useful?

[Your name], Grand River Robotics
