Short answer
Arkansas had 1,640 trucking establishments in 2023, employing 38,150 people on a $2.39 billion payroll (Census County Business Patterns). At 23.3 employees each, they're the second largest on average of any state. Three SEC-listed carriers are headquartered there: J.B. Hunt in Lowell ($12.0 billion of 2025 revenue), ArcBest in Fort Smith ($4.0 billion) and PAM Transport in Tontitown ($598 million). FMCSA lists 9,843 active carriers in the state. For-hire carriers working only within Arkansas need ARDOT intrastate authority.

What kind of trucking
| Type of trucking (NAICS) | Establishments | Employees |
|---|---|---|
| Long-distance truckload (484121) | 636 | 24,807 |
| Specialized local (484220) | 449 | 3,577 |
| Local general freight (484110) | 263 | 1,963 |
| Less-than-truckload (484122) | 116 | 3,165 |
| Specialized long-distance (484230) | 114 | Not reported (high-noise figure) |
| Household and office moving (484210) | 62 | 576 |
Truckload carriers hold 65.0% of Arkansas trucking jobs at 39 employees per site. The Census Bureau published the specialized long-distance employee count but flagged it as high-noise (confidentiality noise moved it by 5% or more), so it's left out.
| Employees per establishment | Establishments |
|---|---|
| 1 to 4 | 1,045 |
| 5 to 9 | 209 |
| 10 to 19 | 163 |
| 20 to 49 | 137 |
| 50 to 99 | 43 |
| 100 to 249 | 22 |
| 250 to 499 | 12 |
| 500 to 999 | 4 |
| 1,000 or more | 5 |
In broader bands: 1,417 establishments have 1 to 19 employees, 180 have 20 to 99 and 43 have 100 or more, including nine with 500 or more. The counts cover establishments with paid employees, not companies, and leave out owner-operators without staff and private fleets counted in other industries, such as a retailer's own trucks.
In the federal register
FMCSA's Company Census File (29 October 2026) lists 9,843 active carrier registrations with an Arkansas address: 58.9% interstate, 67.1% declaring for-hire work, and 53.7% of those reporting trucks with just one. Carriers report these details themselves. About a quarter list grain, feed or hay and 23.4% list logs, poles or lumber, far higher shares than in Ohio or Indiana. Cargo types are self-reported too, and FMCSA's open-data file doesn't always match a carrier's own SAFER record, so treat these shares as indicative.
The largest for-hire fleets, filtered to records updated in 2024 or later with a driver count consistent with the fleet:

Arkansas rules
ARDOT's Legal Division says all for-hire motor carriers transporting property or passengers in intrastate commerce, wholly within Arkansas, must apply for Arkansas intrastate authority. The Arkansas Highway Police enforce the federal safety regulations, which they began enforcing in 1989, and issue oversize and overweight permits. Interstate carriers need a USDOT number, operating authority and at least $750,000 of liability cover for general freight (49 CFR 387.9).
To check a carrier:
- Search the USDOT or MC number in FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot for fleet size, inspections and crashes.
- Confirm active authority and insurance in FMCSA's Licensing and Insurance search.
- For a load that stays in Arkansas, ask for proof of ARDOT intrastate authority.
- Ask a small carrier which shipper or larger carrier it hauls for most; a fleet that depends on one customer is exposed if that contract changes.
Selling to Arkansas carriers
The three listed carriers and FedEx Freight buy centrally, through procurement teams and long contracts. The more reachable market is the mid-size tier around them. For finding the people at both, see how to find decision makers.
Illustrative example. The vendor and its rates are invented; the counts are from FMCSA's register.
Ozark Yard Systems (ozarkyard.example) sells trailer tracking and yard check-in for carriers with drop-trailer operations. In the register, 98 for-hire carriers in Benton, Washington and Pulaski counties report 10 to 100 power units. Two contacts each (owner or president, and operations manager) gives 196 people; at a 7% reply rate, 14 conversations; if half agree to a 30-day trial on one yard, 7 trials. The opener uses what the carrier is known for in the register: its cargo, fleet size and home city. Bebop can find carriers matching that description and research each one.
Subject: Finding trailers at [city] yard Hi [first name], [Company] runs about [number] power units out of [city], and I'd guess your drivers still walk the yard to find empties before a dispatch. We put a tracker on each trailer and show your yard on one screen, so dispatch knows what's loaded, empty or gone. Could I set up a 30-day trial on your [city] yard? 15 minutes on [day] would do it. Questions people ask
How many trucking companies are in Arkansas?
Census County Business Patterns counted 1,640 trucking establishments with paid employees in Arkansas in 2023, employing 38,150 people, 33rd among states by count but with the second-largest average size, 23.3 employees. FMCSA's register lists 9,843 active carriers with an Arkansas address in its October 2026 file, including owner-operators and private fleets.
What are the biggest trucking companies in Arkansas?
J.B. Hunt Transport Services in Lowell is the largest, with $12.0 billion of 2025 revenue and 31,750 employees in its 10-K. ArcBest in Fort Smith reported $4.0 billion and PAM Transport in Tontitown $598 million. In FMCSA's register, FedEx Freight is registered in Harrison with 17,633 power units, second only to J.B. Hunt's 25,280.
Why are so many trucking companies in Arkansas?
Arkansas doesn't have many trucking employers, 1,640 in 2023, but it has big ones: J.B. Hunt, ArcBest and PAM are headquartered there, FedEx Freight is registered in Harrison and Walmart runs its private fleet from Bentonville. PAM's 10-K calls northwest Arkansas a major center for the trucking industry where support services for most truck and trailer makers are available.
Do I need Arkansas intrastate authority?
If you're a for-hire carrier moving property or passengers wholly within Arkansas, yes. ARDOT's Legal Division says all such carriers in intrastate commerce must apply for Arkansas intrastate authority, and it publishes an exemptions list and application forms. Interstate carriers instead need a USDOT number and, for most for-hire freight, federal operating authority.
Where are most trucking jobs in Arkansas?
In northwest Arkansas. Benton and Washington counties had 221 trucking establishments and 15,911 employees in 2023, 41.7% of the state's trucking jobs, according to Census County Business Patterns. Benton County alone had 11,959 trucking employees at 115 establishments. Pulaski County (Little Rock) has the most establishments, 178, with 5,938 employees.
