Short answer
The SIC code for hotels is 7011, Hotels and Motels. In NAICS it splits into 721110 Hotels (except Casino Hotels) and Motels, 721120 Casino Hotels, 721191 Bed-and-Breakfast Inns and 721199 All Other Traveler Accommodation. There's no single SIC code for hospitality: lodging is SIC Major Group 70 and restaurants and bars are Major Group 58 (5812, 5813). In NAICS, hospitality is Sector 72, Accommodation and Food Services.
- SIC 7011 maps to four NAICS codes; most hotels and motels are 721110.
- County Business Patterns 2023 counts 55,895 hotel and motel establishments (721110) with 1,497,840 employees.
- Casino hotels are only 516 establishments but employ 383,387 people, about 743 per property.
- The SBA size standard for 721110 and 721120 is $40.0 million in average annual receipts.
- On SEC EDGAR, hotel brands and casino operators file under 7011, while most hotel REITs file under 6798.

The SIC code for hotels is 7011
In the 1987 SIC, hotels sit in Major Group 70, Hotels, Rooming Houses, Camps, and Other Lodging Places. The codes in that group:
| SIC | Title | NAICS 2022 equivalents |
|---|---|---|
| 7011 | Hotels and Motels | 721110 (hotels and motels), 721120 (casino hotels), 721191 (bed-and-breakfast inns), 721199 (other traveler accommodation) |
| 7021 | Rooming and Boarding Houses | 721310 |
| 7032 | Sporting and Recreational Camps | 721214 |
| 7033 | Recreational Vehicle Parks and Campsites | 721211 |
| 7041 | Organization Hotels and Lodging Houses, on Membership Basis | 721110 (hotels), 721310 (other) |
7011 is the answer for any hotel, motel, resort, casino hotel or inn on a form that asks for US SIC. UK companies use the UK SIC 2007 list at Companies House, where hotels are 55100, Hotels and similar accommodation. One SIC code covers what NAICS treats as four industries, so a SIC 7011 list mixes 30-room motels, casino resorts and B&Bs.
The SIC codes for hospitality
Hospitality isn't a classification term. In SIC, it spans two major groups in two divisions:
| Part of hospitality | SIC | NAICS 2022 |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels and lodging | Major Group 70 (7011 and the codes above) | Subsector 721, Accommodation |
| Restaurants | 5812 Eating Places | 7225 Restaurants and Other Eating Places, 722310 Food Service Contractors, 722320 Caterers |
| Bars | 5813 Drinking Places | 722410 Drinking Places (Alcoholic Beverages) |
NAICS puts both halves in one sector, 72 Accommodation and Food Services, which County Business Patterns 2023 counts at 784,882 establishments and 14,608,170 employees. Most of that is food service (714,532 establishments); accommodation is 70,350. A "hospitality" target list built from Sector 72 is mostly restaurants unless you narrow it to 721.
The NAICS codes for hotels, and how to choose
| Code | Official title | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 721110 | Hotels (except Casino Hotels) and Motels | Hotels, motels, resort hotels, motor inns, ski resorts with lodging, membership hotels, and hotel management companies that supply the staff to run a hotel |
| 721120 | Casino Hotels | Hotels with a casino on the premises (table games, and often slots and sports betting) |
| 721191 | Bed-and-Breakfast Inns | B&Bs |
| 721199 | All Other Traveler Accommodation | Guest houses, tourist homes, hostels, housekeeping cabins and cottages |
The Census cross-references settle the edge cases:
| If you mainly... | Code |
|---|---|
| Run a hotel with slot machines but no casino | 721110 |
| Run a hotel with a casino | 721120 |
| Run a standalone casino | 713210 Casinos (except Casino Hotels) |
| Manage hotels for owners, supplying the staff to run them | 721110 |
| Provide hotel management services short of running the whole business | 561110 Office Administrative Services |
| License a hotel brand to franchisees without other services | 533110 Lessors of Nonfinancial Intangible Assets |
| Sell time-share units for others | 531210 Offices of Real Estate Agents and Brokers |
| Run an RV park or campground | 721211 |
| Run a rooming house or workers' camp | 721310 |
A hotel's restaurant, spa and conference rooms don't change its code; the definition of 721110 includes food and beverage, recreation, conference and convention services.
How many hotels there are
County Business Patterns 2023, on a 2017 NAICS basis (these codes didn't change in 2022):
| Code | Establishments | Employees | Annual payroll ($1,000) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 721110 Hotels and Motels | 55,895 | 1,497,840 | 58,976,358 |
| 721120 Casino Hotels | 516 | 383,387 | 18,512,186 |
| 721191 Bed-and-Breakfast Inns | 2,304 | 11,933 | 356,244 |
| 721199 All Other Traveler Accommodation | 2,061 | 12,436 | 501,282 |
For 721110, 17,262 establishments have fewer than five employees, 8,340 have 5 to 9, 12,120 have 10 to 19, 12,907 have 20 to 49, 2,764 have 50 to 99, 1,717 have 100 to 249, 508 have 250 to 499, 220 have 500 to 999 and 57 have 1,000 or more. The states with the most are California (6,020), Texas (5,643), Florida (3,546), New York (2,362) and Georgia (2,157). Casino hotels are concentrated in Nevada (144 establishments).
CBP counts properties with paid employees, not companies or brands, and it includes government-sponsored casino hotels, which most government establishments aren't.
SBA size standards
From the SBA's table effective March 17, 2023, in average annual receipts:
| Code | Size standard |
|---|---|
| 721110 Hotels (except Casino Hotels) and Motels | $40.0 million |
| 721120 Casino Hotels | $40.0 million |
| 721191 Bed-and-Breakfast Inns | $9.0 million |
| 721199 All Other Traveler Accommodation | $9.0 million |
| 721211 RV Parks and Campgrounds | $10.0 million |
| 721310 Rooming and Boarding Houses, Dormitories, and Workers' Camps | $14.0 million |
Affiliates count toward receipts, which matters for hotels owned through one company per property: when one owner controls several property companies, the SBA adds their receipts together.
Where the code gets used
- Loans and insurance. Lenders and insurers classify hotels by code; SBA loan eligibility depends on the size standard for the code.
- Government lodging. If you bid to house government travelers or host a conference, the solicitation's NAICS code sets the size standard you must meet.
- Tax returns. The IRS Schedule C list groups all of these as 721100, Traveler accommodation (including hotels, motels, & bed & breakfast inns), a tax code rather than a NAICS code.
Finding hotel companies
On EDGAR, hotel brands, operators and casino resorts file under SIC 7011 (EDGAR list for SIC 7011). The largest by revenue in their latest 10-K:
| Company | EDGAR SIC | Headquarters | 2025 revenue | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marriott International | 7011 | Bethesda, MD | $26,186 million | $19,204 million of it is cost reimbursement revenue; net fee revenues were $5,303 million |
| MGM Resorts International | 7011 | Las Vegas, NV | $17,537.7 million (net revenues) | Casino resorts |
| Hilton Worldwide | 7011 | McLean, VA | $12,039 million | $7,085 million cost reimbursement revenue |
| Hyatt Hotels | 7011 | Chicago, IL | $7,101 million | |
| Host Hotels & Resorts | 6798 | Bethesda, MD | $6,114 million | Hotel REIT with 162 employees |
The table shows why brand revenue misleads sellers. Most of Marriott's and Hilton's revenue is costs reimbursed by hotel owners, and Host, a hotel owner, reports $6.1 billion in revenue with 162 employees of its own. The purchase decisions for a branded hotel are split between the owner, the management company and the brand's standards, so a sale to one property usually means finding the ownership group. Hotel REITs file under 6798 (Real Estate Investment Trusts), though some, such as Park Hotels & Resorts, file under 7011, so search both.
For the 55,895 hotel and motel establishments, filter by size: the 5,266 with 50 or more employees are full-service and resort properties with department heads for sales, food and beverage, engineering and rooms. The list of hotels explains the public sources for property-level lists, and Bebop finds hotel ownership and management groups from a plain-language description.
